ISSUES FACING COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION

Over the past few decades, college administrations have been facing several challenges

from both internal and external forces. Trends influencing the rapid changes are politics, society,

and economic forces. To stay positive, administration has to adapt quickly to leverage education

in new ways. Identifying these trends is important in strategic planning and prepare for the

future.

College administration needs funding to run its operations smoothly. The funding mostly

is from student through the fee they pay in sought of education. There has been a huge shift in

economy forcing colleges to increase student fees to adapt to changing economy. These huge

increases in cost are seriously starting to turn off potential customers for profit-making colleges.

Over the last half-decade, college enrollment has significantly fallen. The question stagnating

college enrollment is "what returns do I get on this huge college investment" or "is college worth

it" according to Washington Post by Nick A (2013)..

According to The Great Cost Shift post-publication, most scholarly go to college to

enhance vocational success as society demands. A high number of enrollments have proved the

claim despite poor jobs and high unemployment. The fact of underemployment has greatly

shifted the enrolment case versus the huge cost paid to colleges. When scholars compare these

two facts, they find no good reason to pay a high cost in colleges and end up being underpaid.

According to NASPA, through their journals envisioning the future of student affairs

(2017), college education has been a decline since 1990s. Colleges have steadily increased fee as

a way to adapt to the changing economy. The situation is likely to escalate as impact of recent

recession on the state budget. For many parents and students, this cost precedes their budget and

will leave them with debts.

ISSUES FACING COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION

Most colleges are profit-making institutions as they are privately owned. However,

imposing huge cost has negatively impacted their enrolments as most of the parents are middle

class and are unable to raise the amount. Since 2015 the enrolment has decreased by 50 percent

according to NASPA, and most students prefer joining public colleges whose cost is relatively

lower compared to private colleges.

College affordability remains a crisis at many two-year colleges and four-year colleges.

The fact that there is no "free College," education keeps on being expensive, and its affordability

is too high. Federal institutions financial aid and federal regulations have caused many college

tuition fees to inflate and reduced distinctive advantages of colleges. The administration has no

freedom and diversity for central direction.

The administration was created in the early 1980s. The current administration is bound by

time and has no experience in academic as they are professionals trained managers. Given the

role of administration, they have no bound to promote research and teaching. However, they are

committed to expanding their administrative and managerial roles.

Faculties have been and will continue to reduce in large numbers as administration

enrolment has greatly gone low. The claim is that faculties do not know how to manage

academic affairs. The hierarchy is created in web with many departments, each having larger

staff and assistant. According to former dean of Harvard College, Henry Rosovsky, stated that

the likelihood of negatively correlated with unrestrained power in college administration is very

high.

ISSUES FACING COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION

When colleges were replaced to be run by administration, they were not only passing

knowledge on to student, but they were passing new vision of society. Today, administration is

stating that colleges can never be more than "knowledge factory" providing expensive and

sophisticated vocational training. Nevertheless, vocational training has a place in education but

not much in practical world (Gibaldi C., 2014).

When you are joining college from high school, it is a big challenge as admission

requires you to change your lifestyle as you are exposed to new things. One bible verse to keep

in mind, especially in this situation is "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever"

(Hebrews 13:8). However, despite being in a new environment with exposure to drug,

immorality, and bad influence, it is important to know that God is always with us no matter

where we go in life. Do not get dismayed or frightened for God your lord is with you wherever

you go Joshua 1:9.

College administration has been encountering a lot of drug abuse cases as many of

student are drug addicts. There has been a rise in mental health cases as a cause of drug abuse.

However, others are caused by anxiety and depression, but of greater cause are drug abuses.

Facts show that one out of ten students has considered committing suicide (Gibaldi C., 2014). On

isolated cases, a suicidal student can exhibit homicidal attempts.

Faculties have been losing influence and power for the last three decades, and colleges

have been on the decline. What is needed currently is a major effort to take back our colleges.

Colleges and higher education learning institutions are incredible and necessary institutions that

make a great impact and unmeasurable contributions on citizens. Therefore, they are worth

protecting and fighting from misguided administration.
