COURSE OBJECTIVES
INTRODUCTION This preliminary course is a review of the ET operations needed by a
technician to use the program with a Caterpillar machine, engine or training
aid. The modules do not teach specific machine systems unless otherwise
stated in the lesson descriptions. Although the course is directed towards
Caterpillar machines, the material can be used with some minor additions
with other applications such as industrial or on highway truck engines.
The course currently contains three modules:

Module 3: Power Train for "M" and "R" Series Tractors

It is necessary that each student be able to demonstrate competence in PC


PREREQUISITE
operations prior to starting in the course. A list of PC training material and
prerequisites are included with each module.

OBJECTIVES Given the Electronic Technician (ET) program and relevant


publications, perform the following functions:

1. Install the ET Service Tool on a PC using Windows 95™ from a


CD ROM, update ET software files and identify the ET version number.
2. Identify all components necessary to operate the ET Service Tool.
3. Connect the PC to a machine and start ET.
4. Set all ET system preferences.
5. Navigate through all menus and screens using the icons, function
keys, mouse and keyboard.
6. Read all status screen parameters.
7. Reconfigure and save a status screen.
8. Read active faults, read and clear logged faults and events.
9. Create and retrieve system files.
10. Retrieve a saved status screen file and print a copy.
11. Obtain and use factory passwords to change fuel settings or erase
events.

PC OPERATION

BASIC PC OPERATION In order to complete all the exercises described in this course, the student
must be able to demonstrate proficiency in basic computer operations
using Windows 95™ including the following tasks:

1. Start up and correctly shut down a PC.

2. Start, operate, save and exit software programs.

3. Operate the mouse or other pointing device using both buttons.

4. Using Windows Explorer: Create, delete and rename directories


(folders), move, delete and rename files, determine hard drive usage
and available capacity. Arrange windows using tile function.

5. Using Windows Explorer, copy files from a diskette or CD ROM


drive to a hard drive.

6. Connect and operate external devices such as a power supply or a


CD ROM drive using the Windows 95™ installation function
"Install Wizard".

7. Identify the current communications port in use. Configure a


communications port to enable external communications with the
PC.

8. Using the Copy Disk function, copy the entire contents on a diskette
to another diskette.

9. Install programs from a CD ROM.

10. Navigate through and manipulate other Windows functions such as:
task bar, pop up start menu, control panel and display functions.
