Re: Reference Librarian

July 28, 2019

Dear Hiring Manager,

I would like to apply for the Reference Librarian position in the Information & Reference Department at the
Main Library because of my desire to continue working for the wonderful library system that is The Public
Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. I have tremendous respect for the work that library workers do,
and I would love nothing more than to continue that service at the Main Library.

The requirements specify that the applicant be able to promote new and existing library resources to
customers, which is something that I already do with customers at the Miami Township Branch in my
current position as a part-time Library Services Assistant. I also advertise library programming to patrons as
often as possible by handing out flyers and calendars, as well as relaying information through
word-of-mouth. My professional background also dictates that I continually update myself on new library
materials so that I can make recommendations to customers and remain knowledgeable about the library
collection. Finally, the advertisement wants applicants to develop and maintain the adult materials
collection, which is already one of my job responsibilities in my current position. I use decision center
weeding lists to weed materials based on high and low circulation, which allows our collection to remain as
pristine as possible. Through the weeding process and through my duty as a shelver, I always have a pretty
good idea about the materials available at Miami Township, and I will bring along that awareness to a new
position within the library system.

Customer service is a strength that I will bring to this Reference Librarian position because I genuinely
enjoy making connections with customers and putting them at ease while we're interacting. It is important
that we maintain an open and judgment free environment for all library patrons, and I strive to create that
safe space every day. Recently, a regular customer told me that I’m one of the kindest people she has ever
known, which touched me and solidified my desire to embody kindness and compassion at work and in my
life. Finally, I have strong interpersonal skills that enable me to create niches for myself in different library
environments. Over the past year, I have traveled to nine different libraries within the system and pride
myself on my hard work, adaptability, flexibility, and the ability to fit in with any staff. I also excel at
creating and maintaining relationships with coworkers to make a harmonious work environment.

I would love the opportunity to interview for the Reference Librarian position in-person to see whether I
would make a good fit for the information & reference department at the Main Library. Please give me a call
at (513) 235-2074 to set something up. Thank you very much for you time and consideration!

Best Regards,

Jordan Case
