Lead Partner - Sydney

Gary Tempany

Qualifications: Master of Business Administration

Gary joined nem in 2014 and leads the firm’s Supply Chain, Logistics & Procurement advisory sector in
Sydney.
Gary has over thirty years experience in the sector. Having commenced with Coles Supermarkets as a
management trainee in 1978, he then progressed through senior management roles and was appointed
National Controller of the Bakery Division in 1987. Gary graduated with his MBA in 1993 and progressed
through retail merchandising roles in FMCG, Hardware and Building materials with Independent Holdings,
Metcash Trading and Fletcher Building.
With Senior National Roles in bakery, grocery and fresh food divisions with Coles, Gary was appointed
General Manager Merchandise and Marketing with Independent Holdings in SA, then appointed to
Sydney as the National GM Merchandise and Marketing responsible for the merchandising, supply chain
and procurement for the turnaround of Metcash Trading. Gary was a lead team member for the Fletcher
Building global sourcing project.
Gary has extensive experience in supply chain, logistics and procurement across FMCG, Pharmacy,
Building Materials, Hardware specialising in supply chain strategy.
Gary’s recent consulting experience includes strategic and marketing planning, competitive advantage
analysis, supplier engagement strategy, merchandise systems assessment and commercial negotiation.

Lead Partner - Sydney

Alan Bradley

Qualifications: Higher National Diploma of Engineering UK

Alan is an experienced leader with a strong understanding of Asian cultures & business practices. He
has 35+ years experience in automated materials handling and logistic systems within the supply chain
industry having a strong foundation in design, sales and senior management.
He has lived and worked in Australia, China, England, Germany, Singapore and Russia during his career
and has a deep understanding of their business cultures.
He has had a particular focus in business development and has held CEO and directorship positions in
Australia, China, Malaysia and Singapore. His last position prior to joining nem Australasia was CEO Asia
Pacific and member of the global management team for a large multinational materials handling and
automation company who specialised in supply chain logistics.
After 12 years living in Asia, Alan has permanently returned to Australia and taken an equity position
in nem Australasia as a Partner to lead the firms supply chain capability across multiple industries and
sectors.

Lead Partner - Melbourne

Dr. Phil Downing

Qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical), Ph.D.


Professional Memberships: Fellow - Institution of Chemical
Engineers, Registered Professional Engineer Queensland

Phil joined nem in 2014 and leads the firm’s Supply Chain, Logistics & Procurement advisory sector in
Melbourne.
Phil has over thirty five year’s experience working in or with manufacturing industries.
After completing his Bachelor’s degree in 1974, Phil undertook a Doctor of Philosophy degree, studying
the process fundamentals of converting coal into oil, before commencing employment in 1979 with Exxon
Chemicals in a petrochemical plant in Altona, Victoria. From 1986 until 2005 he worked in the Food &
Beverage industry with Cadbury Schweppes, and then from 2006 in primarily engineering services with
WorleyParsons and Uhde Shedden, working on the design and operation of oil, gas, refining, minerals
processing and chemical plants, until he joined nem in 2014.
Whilst working with Exxon Chemicals Phil worked in the areas of plant support, advanced process control,
commercial operations and plant management. Within Cadbury, Phil developed and managed numerous
profit-improvement capital projects across multiple sites in Australia and Singapore, ran procurement
in Australia & New Zealand, warehousing and distribution of finished goods in Australia, was GM in
Singapore and project-managed the construction of a greenfields factory in China. He was subsequently
Manufacturing Director in Russia, Technical Director in Australia & New Zealand, Engineering Director
for the combined Cadbury Schweppes business in Australia and New Zealand, and finally Operations
(manufacturing and distribution) Strategy Manager for Asia Pacific. In the engineering services industry
Phil both directly managed clients and developed feasibility studies in the mining, minerals, chemicals and
oil & gas industries.
Phil has extensive senior management experience in the areas of project feasibility, project management,
procurement, warehousing & distribution, factory management, QA, R&D and new product development.
Phil’s recent consulting experience has included projects covering manufacturing performance
improvement for a food manufacturer, go-to-market strategy for an engineering services business, QA
system overhaul for a cosmetics manufacturer and market research for a new material for a start-up
business.
