RFID BASED ATTENDANCE-MONITORING SYSTEM

2
Introduction

Remote monitoring system is a real-time monitoring system that monitors the system from a

remote/mobile location. The conventional method of taking attendance by calling names or signing on paper

is very time consuming and insecure, hence inefficient. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based

attendance system is one of the solutions to address this problem. This system can be used to take attendance

for student in school, college, and university. It can also be used to take attendance for workers in working

places. Its ability to uniquely identify each person based on their RFID tag type of ID card make the process of

taking the attendance easier, faster and secure as compared to conventional method. Students or workers only

need to place their ID card on the reader and their attendance will be taken immediately. With real time clock

capability of the system, attendance taken will be more accurate since the time for the attendance taken will

be recorded. The system is connected to the computer through RS232 and store the attendance taken inside

database.

According to Rodrigo (2012), RFID student monitoring system is a system that will take students

attendance by using RFID technology. This system mainly comprises of Nokia 6212 NFC Mobile which is used

as RFID reader tags which are embedded to the students id cards and server machine is most likely computer.

This system records student’s attendance database server.

“With the help of an attendance system, institutions and other organizations can save time and money. When we talk

about an attendance management system it is not specifically only for schools or companies. It can be used everywhere

where people in large number work. Apart from saving time this system also helps in saving money of the organization

which was otherwise lost in monitoring, tracing and updating information.

Cost spent on buying supplies like ink, paper, files, sheets, pens, punching machines, and many more all can be saved

with the use of automated systems.

This system benefits teachers, management staffs in schools and colleges and managers in companies to easily view all

the collected data within a single click. This stored data is stored in a database and hence is safely stored for years

together. The same data is stored in documents are sure to get misplaced soon in the near future. To avoid all such

problems all the organizations are using this system for a peaceful maintenance.

According to G. Radhakrishnan (2012), This system can be very beneficial for human resource departments too

as they can view the records of their employees and then provide salary to them. With this system issuing the salary

would not at all be tough for companies as they can very easily check the record of employees and issue the salary. This

system if used can be used for a long term process. Archive data too can be obtained as the data base is updated every

year with a fresh set of important information and records.

According to C.O, A., A.O, A. , O.O, O. , & E.O, I. (2013), An attendance management system is the

organized way of managing daily time records or presence in a job setting to reduce losses due to

employee’s downtime. The attendance system has traditionally been approached using time clocks and

timesheets, but today, attendance management goes beyond this to provide a work environment which

motivates and maximizes employee attendance.

Attendance management is a major part of today’s human resource systems; take organization towards

better human resource practice, systems and excellence, hence regular attendance and punctuality are expected

of all employees or candidates in a work setting. Unsatisfactory attendance caused by unscheduled absences

and tardiness that cause a disruption in work, affects productivity, and creates morale problems when workloads

are shifted to other employees.

According to Rahman (2018), An automated system eliminates the need for paper tracking and instead makes

use of barcode badges, electronic tags, touch screens, magnetic stripe cards or even biometrics This makes life easier for

both the employee and the business as work hours are logged automatically when the employee enters and leaves the

office. This eliminates the possibility of timesheets getting lost or manipulated. It also saves a lot of time for the payroll

department since automated systems usually have integrated reporting functionalities which take care of most of the

pay processing.

According to LakshmiSudha, Shinde, Thomas, Abdugani (2015),Review Related literature Barcode based

student attendance project reduces the time required for the entire process of marking the attendance as the

attendance is marked automatically once the student scans his/her barcode instead of the professor marking the

attendance manually by calling out the name of the student and marking their attendance in the register. Attendance

in colleges is generally paper based which may sometimes cause errors. Taking attendance manually consumes

more time.

The emergence of sensors has innovated the technology in smartphones and Student Identification (ID) card

which facilitate the authentication process. Technology such as barcode, Bluetooth , RFID and NFC are used in

attendance system to improve the weaknesses in biometric system. However, there is concern in substantial additional

cost to the university, namely hardware reader to track the ID.

Tinn (2001) stated that the computerization responded to the call the office or any workplace to help their daily

operation.

Janes (2001) stated that computers are extremely reliable device and very powerful calculators with some great

accessories applications like word processing problem for all of business activities, regardless of size, computers have

three advantages over other type of office equipment that process information because computer are faster, more

accurate more economical

Maloloset.al (2002) stated that the study of automation is important in the sense time that minimizes the time

and effort normally exerted in manual process.

Reyes (2005) said that task would be time consuming to accomplish manually and more practical with the aid of

computers field in cabinet. According to Flores (2002), the automation is described simply as the substitution of machine

control of human. RalphM. Stair (1999) emphasized that the development of technology through the years have enabled

us to do more with less effort. From the orientation of the light bulb to the industrial revolution and beyond, we have

continuously tried to in a more efficient means of doing tasks
