CHRONICLED: 95 YEARS OF CONQUERING TRIALS

“The only thing that is constant is change”

- Heraclitus

As time goes by, global challenges arise affecting every

citizens of the world. According to McArthur (2018), on his article on

weforum.com, there are 3 major challenges for the world in 2019 : re-

coupling overall economic progress with gains in living standards, de-

coupling economic progress from environmental degradation, and

ending marginalization so that absolutely no one gets left behind. These

challenges involves problem on how economic growth could be felt on

everyday life of regular people. Talks about environmental issues are

rampant. For example, the number of factories and other infrastructures

increase in such a rapid rate. This was blamed for the rapid increase in

pollution on air, land and waters. Another issue is that the growth of a

certain country focuses only on ecomomy leaving other aspects such as

social stability, peace and order, public health and more. Such situation

favors the ones in the business world (elites) causing them to earn more

without making the lives of people on the outskirts any better.

Such problems may affect any country in the world especially

the third-world countries like the Philippines. Last 2018, the country’s

inflation hits the rate of 6.7 % on October, according to Philippine

Statistics Authority (PSA). Inflation rate shows the increase on prices of

products in the market wether food, utilities, health products, or other

basic necessities. According also to PSA, the poorest families feel 8% of

inflation which make their life harder. The Tax Reform for Acceleration

and Inclusion (TRAIN) law was said to be a factor that affects the

prices.

The Philippine archipelago also experiences natural calamities.

Being located at the typhoon belt in the Pacific, Philippines is visited

by an average of 20 typhoons every year. It is also located at the

pacific ring of fire making it vulnerable for volcanic eruptions and

earthquakes.

Another issue in the said country was the ‘War on Drugs’

campaign of the current administration. There are unidentified killings

and deaths on police anti-drug operations. This caused some

disturbance of peace in affected places. There are also cases of fear

among the public.

Being in the midst of such problems, Barangay Lingga in

Calamba City is such an interesting community. It occupies about 45

hectares of land area According to the locals, their barangay usually

experiences floods on rainy days. There are also reported drug cases

on the said barangay. Like other urbanized barangays in Calamba,

Lingga is also a host on both development and poverty. Along with

urban structures, there are also slum areas.

The historical background of Calamba City is also present in

the said barangay. It was the Spanish period when Lingga became

the center of transportation and trade. Year 1924 in the time of

American Period, the first ever public school was built in Lingga Aside

from this, a bloody past also happened. It was midnight, February 12,

1945, when the residents had a tragic experience under the hands of

Japanese Army. Almost all men were imprisoned in Lingga Elementary

School. They were sent at Real where they were killed. It

commemorated today as ‘Doce de Pebrero’.

Its rich history makes Lingga more interesting. The problems of

the current times are way different from the past but we may see how

people of such community cope with challenges they are facing. This

community plan may help in identifying other problems and may

arrive on different solutions on existing problem, making Lingga a

better community.
