CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT-IX
ASSIGNMENT-6

1. What do you understand by bar chart and milestone chart? Explain with
example.

A bar chart is a graphical tool that can be used to present data in a way that
is easy to read, easy to understand, and provides the ability for easy
comparison of all provided data.
It can be used to provide the project team and all of those looking for project
related information data from the individual schedule activities and work
breakdown structure components.
In a typical bar chart the left side of the chart displays the work breakdown
structure components or the individual schedule activities, the dates in
question are placed along the top of the chart, and the activity durations are
represented by date-placed horizontal bars.

Advantages of Bar chart:-

 It creates a picture of complexity.

 It organizes your thoughts.
 It demonstrates that you know what you’re doing
 It (should) help you to set realistic time frames
 It can be highly visible

A Milestone Chart focuses on planned significant events scheduled to occur at

specific times in the program. Such events could be the initiation or completion
of a particularly important or critical activity, equipment deliveries, reviews, or
approval dates.
Like the Gantt chart, the milestone chart uses symbols imposed on a calendar to
provide information about planned and actual completion dates and any
revisions to the milestone schedule. There is no standard set of symbols for
milestone charts.
The Figure below shows examples of the symbols prescribed for reporting
milestone information.

Milestone chart stones can be shown in various colors depicting the status of the
milestone. Milestones can also appear on Gantt charts; project management
software supports the placement of milestones on Gantt charts and other project
reports and displays generated by the software.
Project managers use milestones to mark:

 the start of significant work phases

 the end of significant work phases
 the deadlines for something
 when an important decision is being made
Advantages of Milestone chart:-

 Improved communication and team cohesion

 Avoid resource overload
 Measure the progress of projects
 See overlapping activities and task dependencies
 Experience more clarity
 Practice better time management
 Boost flexibility
A typical small house construction project consists of following operations
along with time set for its completion. The project commences on
Wednesday 14th October 2017. Expected progress by 10th November
keeping 5 working days in a week, prepare bar chart of the project.

Assuming the assumption made also determine:

Total time and date of completion of project:-

The project will be completed by 29th November.
Total time taken to complete the project-48 Days
