Conflicts on Time Due to Social Media

Technology had played a huge role in the modern life in the community. It brought

us a lot of convenience and makes our tasks easier and makes life more manageable .

One of its products is social media. Everybody is familiar and have an idea about it, but

the knowledge that most of the people know is actually a part of a wide and very broad

information of what social media can do, its effects, and the advantages and

disadvantages it possess. It is very helpful in nature, however, most of the people have

been using it in a wrong manner unconsciously.

Social media possess influence that could be used in both positive and negative

way, it would depend on the user on how it would affect them. Social media is defined as

the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input,

interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and other online means of

communication that are used by large group of people to share information and develop

social and professional contacts is also considered social media. Facebook, Twitter,

Tumbler, and Instagram are examples of social media.

Social media is commonly used today. It is used by most people for different

purposes, some for businesses, school works, and some are for leisure time only. It has

the capability to keep people in touch with each other. However, it also has its own

disadvantages. Studying and other important matters are being interrupted due to the

overuse of social media.

Social media is time consuming, causing a person to be less productive. Getting

stocked-up on their favorite social media site and surf the web for hours. Most workplace

distractions are electronics. A survey conducted by harmon.ie shows that 57% of work

interruptions involve either the use of social tools like email, social networks, and text

messaging, or switching windows among disparate standalone tools and applications, as

well as personal online activities such as Facebook and Internet searches. The remaining

43% of workplace distractions comes from activities like phone calls, talking with co-

workers and ad hoc meetings. 45% of employees surveyed reported they work only 15

minutes or less without getting interrupted and 53% waste at least one hour each day due

to all types of distractions. The survey found the increasingly common addiction to web-

based activity - which psychologists call "online compulsive disorder" - is pervasive in the

workplace. 2 out of 3 people tune out of face-to-face meetings to communicate digitally

with someone else This behaviour leads to rudeness in attitude and lack of cooperation

in the workplace.

Students are being distracted by social media. Instead of reviewing, most of the

students use their time on social media, spending hours sitting and simply posting photos

and status on different social media accounts and checking updates on their gadgets.

They can no longer help on household chores. Their tasks are being delayed due to

overuse of social media.

Individual’s focus is divided to do multiple tasks at the same time. Students focus

is disturbed by their gadgets. They tend not to listen during class discussions resulting to

poor academic performance. Those students that are too attached to social media is
physically present but mentally absent on class. Reviewing is set aside while checking

posts and updates on social media. Aside from studies, it is also one of the reasons of

lack of concentration on work. It is causing low quality products and service on the

workplace. These situations are common on jobs that are using computers. For an

instance, BPO companies render their services thru phone and online, giving call center

agents a chance to access to their social media accounts while on duty. This leads to

poor performance that may cause a bad impact on the company and may lose their

customers.

Time is precious to everyone. It should always be manage well. However, due to

social media, time management becomes complicated. It can intersect on whatever the

person is doing. People cannot follow their schedule due to social media. A person that

is too attach to it cannot notice the time passing by, resulting in tardiness on work or at

school. Procrastination is also practiced unconsciously. Things that could be done on time

is set aside, like for example, students do their assignments on class instead of doing it

at home. Individuals gets used to do their tasks right on the deadline. Social media can

cause delays and distractions if not used properly.

Social media is created to be used on good purposes. In fact, it is very useful in

today’s lives. This is like any other tools that has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Even though it can cause distractions on individual’s task, it will only depend on how it is

used by the person. Social media should be used wisely to lessen the negative effects it

may cause.
