Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to a rocking fun year in the ! This is going to be a

year full of amazing opportunities, challenges, and a time of blossoming
independence. Students will build upon their foundation in reading, writing,
and math that will serve them for the rest of their lives. We will be working
with several new concepts as well as revisiting and mastering familiar
ones. We will be concentrating on SST’s academic goals: creativity,
leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, and effective learning.

I. Curriculum:
● English Language Arts/Writing and Reading Workshops: We will be using
HMH Into Reading , iRead, A-Z Learning, and Fountas & Pinnell. The
learner will be engaged in centers during guided reading, exploring
whole language, word study, and independent reading. Students will
expand their vocabulary and practice different styles of writing. As an
extension, students are encouraged to use iRead and A-Z learning at
home. iRead and A-Z learning are computer based programs that
reinforces foundational reading skills.

● Mathematics: We will continue using Go Math, Hands 2 Mind: Hands-On

Standards, and IXL this year as our math curriculum, which uses
problem based interactive learning and visual learning to deepen
conceptual understanding. Some of the topics covered include place
value, solving up to four-digit addition and subtraction problems with and
without regrouping, counting money, understanding fractional parts,
continuing to build analytical skills, and learning about personal financial
literacy.

● Social Studies: Students will learn how to be a responsible member of

their classroom, school, and community using Texas Studies Weekly
curriculum. They will explore and find out how goods are made and
brought to us, who provides services in a community, and how they can
be a good shopper.

● Science: Students will investigate science concepts using the

STEMscopes curriculum created by Rice University. Every good scientist
knows that they need to start with safety rules first. Once safety rules
have been learned, they will be exploring with tools and measurement,
learning about patterns of movement, food chains, and insect life
cycles.

II. Managing for Academic Success:

1. Snack: We are allowing a healthy afternoon snack. Students will be able
to enjoy their snack during dismissal. * SNACK GUIDLINES- Must be an
APPROVED snack choice. School policy states no homemade snacks
allowed (See attached paper).

2. Take Home Folders: Students will be assigned a folder to take home

every night, and bring back to school daily. In this folder there will be a
behavior calendar, a homework helper, and any papers/notes from the
teacher. Please check folder nightly and SIGN WEEKLY.
● The front of the folder will contain homework and any other
important notes from the teacher. Notes that should be signed and
homework should be placed back in the front of the folder. All
graded/completed work will be placed in the back of the folder on
Friday for parents to keep. Please empty papers from the back of
the folder so future completed work can be placed in the back of
the folder.

3. Materials: School supply list can be found online at sstdiscovery.org.

If more supplies are needed throughout the school year notes from
your teacher will be sent home in your child’s folder.

4. Grading Policy:
Grading will be based on a weighted system where all numeric averages
on Report Cards use percentages for Mathematics, Reading/Writing,
Science, and Social Studies.
● Formative 70%
● Summative (Major Grades) 25%
● Homework 5%

5. Homework Policy: Students will be given homework Monday-Thursday.

Homework will include math sheets, reading log, and spelling practice.
Spelling and math homework will be due every Friday. Reading logs
should be signed daily and turned in on Friday.

6. Projects: There will be some home projects, which will have to be

completed at home and returned back to school. You will be given ample
notice and will also receive directions, a rubric for grading, and
examples of past projects.

7. Make-Up Policies:
● Following any excused absence, students will be given an
opportunity in class to make up any assignments or tests for as
many days as they are absent. Independent assignments will
not be sent home, students will have to complete these
assignments in class. If a student has not turned in their work
at the end of the allotted number of days, then a two-day
extension will be given. Students with excessive unexcused
absences will receive a zero for missed assignments.

8. Late Work:
● Late work will be accepted, but there is a 10-point penalty per day
for up to three days. After the fifth school day, your child
will receive a zero.

9. Tutoring: Students who require additional instruction will be provided

after school tutoring. The teacher will contact the parents/guardians to
schedule tutoring.

10. Behavior Policy: We will continue using behavior color charts in K-2
classrooms. You will find the behavior calendar inside your child’s
homework folder. Students who are on purple, pink, blue, green, or
yellow will complete their behavior calendar in their homework folder.
Students who are orange or red will have their folder filled in by the
teacher. Colors will be as followed:
Pink: This stage can be reached if your child has had an
outstanding day.
Purple: Had a great day and went above and beyond in the
classroom.
Blue: Students who have had a good day will be on blue.
Green: All students will begin on green. If they stay on green,
they have had a good day, but have received an informal warning.
Yellow: One formal warning has been given to your child.
Orange: Conference stage. At this level, there will be a one-on-
one conference with your child and their teacher that will be
documented, signed and will need to be signed and returned by a
parent/guardian the next day.
Red: Students will be placed on this stage if there is an additional
infraction. This will also be accumulated. After reaching ‘RED’
three times, a parent/teacher conference will be scheduled and
the Dean of Students will be asked to attend. As a team, we will
develop an appropriate behavior modification plan to be
implemented.
*Students will be referred directly to the office when safety is
involved, or when conduct is severe. Cursing, defiance, and physical harm to
others will result in such action. (Please refer to student handbook for any
further student disciplinary policies.)
Field Trips: The K-2 department will be planning field trips for the
upcoming year. Dates and Places TBA.
*As our school does not provide transportation, parent drivers will
be needed and appreciated. Details will come closer to the trips.
We look forward to working with and watching your child grow into their
greatest potential this year. With your parent involvement and our dedication
here at school, we feel that this will be an excellent year!
Sincerely,

Second Grade Team!
