CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Introduction

As it is indicated this chapter discuss the research design, data gathering procedures,

respondents of this research study, instrumentation, and statistical analysis of the data that were used

in this research study.

Research Method

In order to utilize a descriptive the research method, based from the definition of Calderon &

Gonzales (2007), descriptive research is concerned with conditions of relationships that exists; practices

that prevail; beliefs; processes that are ongoing on; effects that are being felt, or trends that are

developing. The process of descriptive research goes beyond more gathering and tabulation of data. It

involves the elements of interpretation of the meaning or significance of what is described. Thus,

description is often combined with comparison and contrast involving measurements, classifications,

interpretation and evaluation.

This study used the mentioned research design. Descriptive in the sense that it described the

student-respondents demographic profile, student’s behavior and personality traits and correlational in

the sense that it the relationship between students using demographic profile, student’s behavior and

personality traits.
Population and Sample Size

The sample drawn from 20 students of University of Caloocan City School Year 2019-2020. The

Survey methodology was used to gathered and compare for the sample and Cluster Sampling Design

was employed in selecting the students-respondents who became the subject of the study.

Sampling Technique

Cluster Sampling Design technique was use so that everyone had an equal and independent

chance of being selected.

The cluster that compose of 20 students that is currently taking summer class in University of Caloocan.

Description of Respondents

The respondents for this study, The 20 student-respondents who provide demographic profile as

to age, gender, year and section, usage of social network and personality traits. These are the students

of University of Caloocan City School Year 2019-2020 who are taking summer class.

Research Instrumentation

The research instrument used in this study was a pre-designed questionnaire for the researcher

and respondents. The Survey questionnaire Likert Scale was a tool used by the researcher to collect

data, which was used by the researcher to collect data, which was used to determine the socio

demographic data of the respondents.

The instruments used in this study include the survey questionnaire to determine the age,

gender, year and section, usage of social media and character traits. A Personality Traits Rating Scale

which composed of 10-15 items. The researcher constructed the rating scale to determine the behavior

of the student-respondents inside the classroom. To ensure its validity, it was presented to an expert for

validation. Afterwards it going to be tested to 20 students f University of Caloocan City.

The questionnaire was composed of questions that would determine the respondent’s socio-

demographic profile and questions that focused on the Personality trait of the students when using

social network and the changes on their personality after been using social network. The questionnaire

also provided the profile of the respondents and their actions on using social media.

The test is multiple choice type of questionnaire composed of 10-15 items.

VALIDATION OF THE INSTRUMENT

The questionnaire was submitted to the thesis adviser for comments, suggestions and

corrections. It was given to experts for comments, suggestions and corrections. For the validation of the

test questionnaire, it will be distributed to the students that is currently enrolled that is not part of the

cluster respondent. This is to ensure the clarity of the test instructions and level of difficulty of the

questions asked.

RESEARCH PROCEDURE

As an initial move, the researchers sought the permission of the Department Head of Education

and the advisor to conduct the study at the school and allow the researcher to seek the cooperation of

the teacher and students SY 2019-2020 in filling the Personality rating scale for the student-
respondents. The researcher also asked permission to allow the student t to provide their demographic

profile through completion of a survey questionnaire and for the researcher to secure the results. The

researcher personally administered the research instrument. Respondents were properly oriented

before they were set to the tasks. Each item was explained for further understanding. Then all data

gathered, classified and tabulated.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF THE DATA

In analyzing the data gathered, frequency counts, percentage, range, mean and Likert Scale

were used.

The Percentage was used o determine the percent of total observations falling under a given

category.

P = F/N* 100

Where:

P = sample proportion

F = frequency of observation or the value of the sample

N= sample size
Mean was used to determine the scores of the student-respondents.

_
X =∑X

Where:

_
X = Sample arithmetic mean

X = each individual in the sample

N = sample size

For the response on the Personality Rating Scale, a five-point Likert Scale was adopted for the

purpose of interpretation.

Five -Point Rating Scale

Scale Interpretation

1 Strongly Disagree

2 Disagree

3 Neutral

4 Agree

5 Strongly Disagree
To interpret the values obtained for Personality Traits, a five-point Likert Scale also utilized:

Personality Trait Scale

Rating Interpretation

4.50 – 5.00 Extremely Acceptable

3.50 – 4.49 Highly Acceptable

2.50 – 3.49 Acceptable

1.50 – 2.49 Slightly Unacceptable

1.00 – 1.49 Not Acceptable

As for the involvement of students in social network which was based on the student-
respondents, the following scale was used:

Social Network Involvement Scale

Percentile Rating Interpretation

95 and higher Always

89 – 94 Often

83 – 88 Sometimes

77 – 82 Rarely

71 – 76 Never
Pearson correlation coefficient is used to determine the relationship between the variables that
as being tested. The formula for the Pearson product correlation coefficient is:

R = ∑ (x - x ) (y - y )

∑ (x - x )2 ∑ (y - y )2

Where:

X and y are the sample means AVERAGE (array1) and AVERAGE (array2).

Array 1 is a set of independent values.

Array 2 is a set of dependent values.
