The Faith Once Delivered

When you speak of “the faith” what do
you mean? Chances are if you use the
word faith you mean something along
the lines of one’s trust or commitment
in God—like “I have faith in God.”
And then when you speak of “the
faith” you’re probably speaking of, to
use the dictionary’s definition of it, a
system of religious beliefs. It’s more
like a collection of whatever it is that
form the convictions, the policies,
the practices, and so forth of a given
religious system.
We often quote Jude and talk of how
important it is to earnestly contend for
“the faith…once delivered to the saints”
and when we do that we are usually in
the process of defining our doctrinal
“distinctives”. In fact, I think some people
might even understand
the scripture to
say that we should Mercy unto you,

the doctrines once
delivered to the saints.” and peace,

right? What would
be multiplied.

were asked to list those things right
now? Perhaps the Sabbath day would
be very near the top of the list, then
holy days, maybe the Trinity, dietary
laws or tithing would come along;
and immediately thereafter certain
practices that we hold to be important
like the study of the Scriptures, prayer,
fasting, and so forth.

Now what is fascinating is that we
consider these distinctives, but the
truth is that the first-century Jerusalem
church would not have considered
them distinctives at all. If you went to
the synagogue in Jerusalem during the
first century on a Sabbath day and you
sat down and listened to the reading of
the Law and after that you were chatting
with some of the gentlemen who were
present, and they asked you “What do
you believe?”, Your response might be,
“Well, I keep the Sabbath, I keep the
holy days, I observe the dietary laws...”
and they wouldn’t have blinked an eye.
The Pharisees held all of these beliefs
and carried out all of these practices
and then some. So if you were a first-
century Christian you wouldn’t even
bring up these issues
if you were discussing
those things which
comprise your faith
as opposed to some
other faith or system
of religion or system
of belief.
Paul did not go into
the synagogues to
tell people to keep
the Sabbath and holy
days—they already
did. It just was not an issue at this
particular time and that explains a
great deal of what you read in the New
Testament.
When we speak of defending “the faith”
or earnestly contending for “the faith”
why do we talk about the Sabbath, the
holy days, clean and unclean meats,
tithing, and so forth? Well, basically
because they are distinct from other
people who call themselves Christians,
and those are the people with whom
we are interacting on a continuous
basis. We lose sight of those things that
distinguish us from the Jews because
we are preoccupied with the things
that distinguish us from Baptists,
Methodists, Catholics, Presbyterians,
Messianic Judaism, and such.
I really think that what I’m talking
to you about today defines, or rather
underlies, one of the most pernicious
errors that we make in the Church of
God. We define ourselves by looking
for differences—we define ourselves
away from others, and in the process
we lose track of who we are. If you keep
defining yourself in terms of what you
are not, how do you ever come to terms
with what you really are?
So when Jude says, “Brethren, let’s
earnestly contend for the faith once
delivered,” what is he talking about?
Let’s go to the book of Jude and
consider what it is that he is talking
about when he speaks of “the faith”
once delivered. “Jude, the servant of
Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to
them that are sanctified by God the
Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ,
and called: Mercy unto you, and peace,
and love, be multiplied. Beloved, when
I gave all diligence to write unto you of
the common salvation, it was needful
for me to write unto you, and exhort
you that ye should earnestly contend
for the faith which was once delivered
unto the saints” (Jude 1:1-3). What
should we struggle to keep?
“For there are certain men crept in
unawares, who were before of old
ordained to this condemnation,
ungodly men, turning the grace of our
God into lasciviousness, and denying
the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus
Christ” (Jude 1:4).

The Faith was an important concept
in the early church. I think the Faith
was short for “The faith of Jesus
Christ” and all that phrase implied.
◆It implied Jesus’ singular teachings.
◆It implied the life he lived.
◆It implied his suffering in our place.
◆It implied his death.
◆It implied his resurrection.
◆It implied his work that he is doing
right now from the right hand of
the Father.
In other words, they came in here
surreptitiously. We did not know who
they were, we did not know what they
stood for, but they came in.
When he wrote this letter he calls
these people lascivious; and since
he says they turn the grace of God
into lasciviousness—in other words
immoral conduct, even to the extent
of denying the Lord Jesus Christ that
bought them—the challenge to our
faith does not lie in Sabbath observance
or holy day observance or clean and
unclean meats and such. The challenge
lies in corrupt and immoral behavior.
“The faith” involves considerably more
than the distinctives that we hold—
those things that set us apart from
other religions, other faiths, and other
beliefs. The fact is we probably have
more in common with the church
down the street than we think. They
believe that Jesus Christ is the son of
God. They believe that he was dead
and buried. They believe that he was
raised from the dead. They believe that
we were forgiven of our sins by his
shed blood. They believe in his grace.
They believe in all these things. We

have our differences with them, but
the truth is we have more similarities
with them as far as “the faith” than we
have differences; but because we seem
driven to define ourselves against them
we emphasize those things that make
us distinct from them.
Jude went on to say, “But you, beloved,
remember the words which were
spoken before by the apostles of our
Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told
you there should be mockers in the
last time, who should walk after their
own ungodly lusts. These are they who
separate themselves, sensual, having
not the Spirit. Be Strong in the Love
of God But you, beloved, building up
yourselves in your most holy faith,
praying in the Holy Spirit, Keep
yourselves in the love of God, looking
for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ
unto eternal life” (vv. 17-21).
These are things which almost
anyone who reads the New Testament
will understand and know—these
corruptions of the flesh, the fornication,
and this type of thing is condemned by
God. If I were going to ask what Jude is
talking about when he says “the faith”,
I would think it’s really kind of along

these lines: You build yourselves up
in your holy faith, praying in the Holy
Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of
God, and actually look for the mercy of
our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Where is your faith? Is your faith
in the Sabbath day, or in the mercy
of Jesus Christ? The Sabbath day
is not something in which faith is
even meaningful. It’s a day. There’s a
commandment by God not to work
on this day and to meet with him and
to honor him by not working on that
day. But you don’t have faith in the day.
You have faith in Jesus Christ and his
mercy. You have faith in his sacrifice.
You have faith in his shed blood. You
have faith in his resurrection. That’s
where your faith is. So when we talk
about earnestly contending for “the
faith” of Christ, shouldn’t that be what
we’re talking about?
Jude then says, “And of some have
compassion, making a difference: And
others save with fear, pulling them out
of the fire; hating even the garment
spotted by the flesh. Now unto him
that is able to keep you from falling,
and to present you faultless before the
presence of his glory with exceeding
joy, To the only wise God our Saviour,
be glory and majesty, dominion and
power, both now and ever. Amen” (vv.
22-25).
This is such a short letter and so full of
emotion—we are to earnestly struggle
for “the faith” once delivered to the
saints. What I want you to understand
is that this is not a struggle for doctrine.
Doctrine is not “the faith”.
A church needs to have some cohesive
core doctrines that define who they
are. The problem is that if we go about
this to define who we are not—from
the point of view of distinctives—then
people will only know us according to
how we are different from others, and
that may not be the most important
thing to know about us at all. Far better
that we should be defined and known
by our love for one another than by
those beliefs that cut us off from other
people.
In Galatians 1:23, Paul writes that
he now preaches the faith he once
destroyed. Do you think that Paul
was in any way instrumental in trying
to destroy the Sabbath, the holy days,
clean and unclean meats, or tithing? Is
there any hint anywhere of Paul being
instrumental in trying to destroy any
of those practices in his life prior to his
conversion (or after for that matter)?
No, there is not. What was it that he
had tried to destroy? It was “the faith”
of Christ, “the faith” in Jesus—the belief
in the resurrection, the belief in Christ
as the Lamb of God that takes away
the sin of the world (and, by the way,
yours in the process). That’s what Paul
was doing. He persecuted that way and
now he preaches “the faith” which he
once destroyed. Make a note of it: “the
faith” which Paul preached was distinct
from what he had previously believed
and practiced.
Let’s go back to the question I asked
you before: Do you have faith in the
Sabbath day or do you have faith in
Christ? It’s a real easy question. There
is nothing that the Sabbath day can do
to save you or rescue you. It’s good for
you to keep the Sabbath day. You honor
God in doing so, but it’s God you honor
not the day. You might say you trust the
God who gave you the Sabbath day, but
it isn’t the law in which you put your
trust.
There’s a little bit of a distinction
between having faith in Jesus Christ
and having “the faith” of Jesus Christ.
When we talk about “the faith” of Jesus
Christ we are talking about “the faith”
once delivered to the saints, which is
more than merely your personal belief
in him. It is “the faith” of Jesus Christ;
which means the practice, the body of
beliefs, the whole structure of truth that
Jesus Christ believed, taught, practiced,
and what he did for mankind.
This is where you begin to realize
what “the faith” is—this is the thing
that distinguished Paul, Peter, James,
and John from the Jewish community
of the time. The Sabbath and the holy
days did not. They were not matters of
stumbling between them. What was a
matter of stumbling between them was
“the faith” of Jesus Christ—his death,
his burial, his resurrection, and his
ongoing priesthood on behalf of all of
us.
You know, if we could really come to
grips with what “the faith” is—what
it really is—I can’t help but wonder:
Would we have anywhere near the
differences, the divisions, the splits, and
the arguments that we have today if we
defined ourselves according to Christ
and his sacrifice and his resurrection
and his faith as opposed to all those
things that somehow make us different
from one another?
We have gone about defining ourselves
in terms of our distinctives instead
of defining ourselves in terms of “the
faith” of Jesus Christ. We have engaged
in a struggle for doctrine once delivered
instead of a struggle for “the faith”
once delivered. What I’m trying to say
is we need to learn to define ourselves
according to “the faith” of Jesus Christ;
not according to our differences with
other Christians, not according to
our differences from the Jews, but
according to our conformation to “the
faith” of Jesus Christ.

“Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanc-
tified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: Mercy unto
you, and peace and love, be multiplied” (Jude 1:1–2 KJ2000).
Jude was one of a class of people called the *desposyni*. This was an important
element in the early church and was for many years to follow. It’s a term that
refers to the relatives of Jesus. There’s a difference of opinion as to whether he
*had* any blood relatives or not but most everybody concludes that Mary had
additional children after Jesus. They were his brothers (half-brothers) and they
were quite influential among the saints. You could kind of understand that. I
mean, if there was someone around who had known Jesus ever since he was a
tot—you know, grew up with him, had considered him an older brother; and
they were maybe five or six years under him (no, it wouldn’t have been even that
much under him, probably)—those people would have been in demand. What
did he say? What did he do? How did he act? I can think of a jillion questions I
would ask Jude about Christ. Well, he goes on to say:
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation,
it was necessary for me to write unto you, and exhort you that you should ear-
nestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3
KJ2000).
So the faith, by this time, is firmly established. “The common salvation” is an
interesting expression. It calls to mind something that Peter said in one of his
speeches recorded in Acts. Chapter four, verse eleven, he said:
“This *[Jesus]* is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is be-
come the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is
none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”
(Acts 4:11–12 KJV).
What was that name? In the Book of Acts, and in his gospel, Luke records it as
*Iesous*. It’s commonly transcribed from the Greek into English as “Jesus”.

A key ingredient for any Feast of Tabernacles to be “The Best Feast Ever!” is the
opportunities for fellowship with family and brethren in the Church of God. It is one
of the primary ingredients that contribute to Feast Fever among the people of God who
enjoy being together as we rejoice before The Lord.
Whether it is reuniting with old friends, connecting with family or looking forward to
meeting new brethren and establishing those enduring friendships, the Feast is the time
we desire to grow and build our relationships with one another together with God.
The Festival Organizers at the Kentucky Lake Cooperative LBL Feast have worked to
maximize fellowship opportunities during the Feast so we can take advantage of our
time together.
Nothing says family or breaks the ice with new acquaintances like breaking bread
together. We have several dining opportunities scheduled during the Feast—including
a free buffet luncheon between services for everyone attending on the first High Day; a
Pie and Ice Cream Social; a Ladies Tea; a Senior Luncheon; Family Day at the park; and
a Family Picnic. All hosted and provided by the Festival site.
Many of our activities scheduled are perfect fellowship opportunities like our Family
Day at The Park; the Family Picnic; The Pie and Ice Cream Social; Kentucky Shores
Amusement Park; the Family Dance; Fun Show and our infamous Game Night at the
Convention Center.
Speaking of which, one unannounced blessing at the Kentucky Lake LBL Feast site is
that the beautiful Convention Center Hall is at our disposal throughout the Feast even
into the wee hours of the morning. Fellowship before and after Services, seminars and
even time to simply meet and have hours-long discussions and group studies without
worrying you are wearing out your welcome at a restaurant, make for a unique blessing
afforded to everyone at this festival location.
If you have not made plans yet for where you will attend the Feast of Tabernacles this
year, and want to connect and meet new brethren in the Family of God, we invite you
