Auto-Parking of Autonomous Mobile Vehicle
The Project aims at development of Control algorithm(s) and their
Hardware Implementation for Auto-parking of a Passenger Vehicle.
The scope of the project is such that the vehicle is given the slot for
parking (by the driver) and the vehicle parks itself autonomously in
the given slot. It is expected that the parking algorithm(s) work in
parallel parking and/or reverse parking smoothly.
Preferably methodologies to be used are: Non-holonomic motion
planning, differential flatness based control, AI based control and
planning algorithms.
The work is required to be carried out on a mobile vehicle platform
(RC Electric Vehicle- off the shelf). The Navigation platform which will
be used is Navstick (www.navstick.org) along with Odroid (add-on
board).

7 SRK7 Development of Sliding Mode based feedback controller for SRK

Autonavigation of an autonomous passenger vehicle
The Project aims at development of Sliding Mode Controller and its
Hardware Implementation for Auto-navigation of a Passenger Vehicle.
The motion planning and path planning algorithms generate the
information (e.g. way points, velocities etc) necessary for
autonavigation of the vehicle. The scope of the proposed project is
such that the student(s) develop trajectory tracking feedback
controller based on Sliding Mode principle. The designing of sliding
mode controller for this system is a challenging proposition since the
system is highly nonlinear and it is not possible to work with a local
linearization. The sliding mode controller should be capable of
autonomously achieving the expected way points and providing the
corrections to the current positions. The vehicle should correct the
errors and follow the path.
Preferably methodologies to be used are: Differential flatness, Sliding
Mode controller for feedback, embedded controller for
implementation of control law.
The work is required to be carried out on a mobile vehicle platform
(RC Electric Vehicle- off the shelf). The Navigation platform which will
be used is Navstick (www.navstick.org) along with Odroid (add-on
board).
This project forms the sub-part of DST (Department of Science and
Technology, Govt of India) sponsored research project currently being
carried out at PVG’s College of Engineering and Technology, Pune,
India.

8 VNP1 INCORPORATION OF UNCERTAINTIES IN POWER VNP

FLOW SOLUTION OF DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS IN &SPG
PRESENCE OF DISTRIBUTED GENERATION USING
INTERVAL ARITHMATIC:
The importance of distributed generation in present age power
systems is a well-known fact. The use of distributed generation
in distribution systems has many proven benefits. There are
many sources of uncertainties existing in power system with
integrated distributed generation. These need to be considered in
the analysis.
The proposed study involves power flow solutions of distribution
systems with integrated distributed generation to incorporate
some of these uncertainties such as loads/generation data,
parameter uncertainties etc. the approach used will be based on
Interval Arithmetic. INTLAB module of MATLAB may be
used.

9 SPG1 PROTECTIVE RELAYING SCJHEME OF DISTRIBUTED SPG&

GENERATION CONNECTED RADIAL DISTRIBUTION VNP
SYSTEMS
The importance of distributed generation in
present age power systems is a well-known fact. The use of
distributed generation in distribution systems has many proven
benefits. However, there are some major issues that must be
properly handled while integrating distributed generation in the
system. Protection of such systems is one of these challenges.
The protection of these networks using protective devices based
only on current is a challenging task due to the change in fault
current levels and fault current direction. This fact must be
considered while designing/modifying the protective relaying
scheme. Implementation of this scheme on standard radial
distribution system through simulation/coding is expected.
Platforms like PSCAD/MATLAB may be used.

10 APD1 Design, Simulation and development of Static Compensator

(STATCOM) and Dynamic Restorer (DVR) for Power APD
Quality Issues”.
The amount of installed wind power connected to the grid
worldwide is increasing notably. This development has forced
the grid operators to tighten their grid connection rules in order
to limit the effects of wind power parks on network quality and
stability. Important issues are the steady state active and reactive
power fed in capability, continuously achieving voltage control
and fault ride through behavior like low and high voltage ride
through (LVRT, HVRT). This means that grid codes demand
4wind farms to stay connected to the grid and stabilize the grid
voltage in case of grid faults. Among the grid faults the voltage
swell is a critical event that can be caused by switching off large
loads or switching on capacitor banks.
When using wind turbines with DFIGs the operation during a
grid fault is complex because the stator is directly connected to
the grid while the rotor is connected via a converter, which
enables control. With no mitigation of the voltage fault the
danger of destruction is imminent. There are different ways to
mitigate voltage swells in distribution systems. Instead of
designing all system components to be tolerant against voltage
swells or changing the conventional control methods FACTs
devices were used to lower the voltage at the wind power
generator.
FACTs can be classified by series and shunt compensation
devices. Among these the Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) and
static compensators (STATCOM) are the most effective devices,
both based on the voltage source converter concept. A DVR is a
power electronic apparatus that protects a sensitive load from
disturbances in the supply voltage by injecting voltage in series
with the load.
The STATCOM injects a reactive shunt current into the grid
system to correct voltage swell.

12 VSB1 MPPT Based Solar Powered Home : VSB

The development of renewable energy has been an increasingly
critical topic in the 21st
century with the growing problem of global warming and other
environmental issues. Solar energy is a renewable source of
energy that has the capability of providing the energy for all the
activities. The second best attractive thing is that there is no
environment hazard wastes are produced as its output compared
to other energy sources like coal and petrol. This project aims to
electrify a small home from the energy generated by solar panels.
The solar panel converts sunlight into electrical energy and this
electrical energy is stored in a battery. The energy stored is used
to light up LEDs provided in the rooms where light is needed.
Even though the major intention is lighting, the energy stored can
be used to power a radio and a small LED TV. The designing
involves, solar panel, battery charge controller, battery, LED
drivers and suitable for low power applications. In order to
provide maximum
efficiency we are using “Maximum Power Point
Tracking”(MPPT) algorithm Technique. For the charging
purpose an algorithm called MPPT algorithm is implemented. It
works by measuring the various parameters like panel voltage,
panel current, battery voltage and battery current. Consider
when the panel supplies 18V and the charging voltage is 14V ,
when the ordinary charging process is used, 4V of input will be
lost. So by using MPPT algorithm this can be overcome by
tracking the maximum current from the panel and thus improving
the efficiency. On looking the out- put voltage, the
microcontroller provides a PWM and is used for the step up or
step down process. The various loads used in the system are an
LED array as light source, a radio and dc fan. All devices work
on dc voltage so can be directly connected to the battery.
13 VSB2 GSM based Automatic Energy meter reading: VSB
Purpose of this project is remote monitoring and control of
domestic energymeter this will enable electric utility company to
read meter reading without visiting each house. This can ne
achieved by using microcontroller unit that continuously
moniters and records energymeter reading in its permanent
memory. This system also malkes use of GSM Modems for
remote monitoring and control.
The Microcontroller based system continuously records the
readings and the live meter
reading can be sent to the Electricity Utility Company on request.
This system also can be used to disconnect the power supply to
the house in case of non-payment of electricity bills. A
dedicated GSM modem with SIM card is required for each
energy meter.
The major building blocks of this project are:
1. Microcontroller based control system with regulated power
supply.
2. GSM Modem for remote communication
3. Electromagnetic Relay and Relay Driver for Power Supply
Control.
4. Digital Energy Meter.
5. LCD Display to display the meter readings.
Applications:
1. Electricity departments.
2. Household Energy meter monitoring.
3. Railway electrical systems.
4. Industrial Energy remote monitoring.
5. Remote controlling system

15 BNC1 D Design and Simulation of Linear Induction Motor (LIM) for BBNC & A
Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) RU (DRDO)

Modern era has started to use electricity for

various subsystems such as weapons, propulsion etc of ships /
warship. All these subsystems are integrated and power of the
ship is optimally utilized and hence reduction in life cycle cost.
This has emerged the concept of electric ship / electric war
ship. One such subsystem in electric war ship is the launch
system for aircraft. At present, either ski jump or steam
catapult is used for launching of aircraft from a warship. Steam
catapult has reached to its limit and is open loop, inefficient
system and requires lot of water to generate steam. To replace
these launch systems, attempts are being made since 1940
when a 1400 feet long Electroplate was developed by
Westinghouse in US. Due to very high cost, it was not realized
on board ship. In recent year, due to advancement in
technology in various field of Engineering and reduction in
price in electronics / power electronics devices, again attempts
are made to develop more reliable and efficient
electromagnetic aircraft launch system.
In this project, linear induction motor of around 100
meter will be designed for launching of about 35 tonne aircraft.
Speed control and breaking method is to be evolved.
Simulation studies will be carried out for optimization of the
design. Also thermal management will be studied.

16 BNC2 Design and Simulation of Power Supply System for BNC &
Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) AU
There is a huge requirement of energy (hundreds (DRDO
of Mega Joules) to launch an aircraft from an electric warship.
In general the power generating capacity of a warship is only a
few MW. Therefore to fill the gap, it is essentially required to
store the energy. The first task is to design the energy storage
system for the required power and compare it with other energy
storage systems. The second task is to design the alternator
integrated with converter-inverter system for quick release of
energy. A suitable control strategy will be developed for
control of power. Thermal modeling and analysis of the system
will be carried out.

17 UMM1 Control of three phase Induction machine output power for wind
power applications and its real time implementation: UMM
Slip ring induction machines when supplied with a variable voltage
and frequency supply on rotor side are widely used in wind power
applications. A variety of literature is available in this particular area.
The modeling of the induction machine connected to the grid is to be
done using Matlab simulink platform. Direct power control method is
to be employed for different speeds. Simulation results may be
verified in real time on hardware using dSPACE platform.
18 UMM2 A control strategy for limiting the dc link voltage fluctuations for UMM
the doubly fed induction wind generator: & VNP
A back to back converter is connected in the rotor circuit of an
induction machine for wind power applications. To keep the dc link
voltage constant, a vector control strategy is employed for the grid
side converter. The control behavior under constant grid voltage and
under voltage dip conditions will be simulated using Matlab simulink
platform. The scheme may be implemented on hardware. dSPACE
platform may be used for getting the control signals.

19 UMM3 An improved direct power control of the real and reactive power UMM &
output of three phase inverter for renewable power applications DBT
and its real time implementation:
Three phase inverters are widely used in renewable energy
applications. The inverter needs to supply real /reactive power
depending on the requirements of the grid. Various methods to
control output power of the inverter have been published in the
literature.
The modeling of three phase inverter connected to the power grid
should be done using Matlab simulink platform. The standard PI
controller equipped with improved direct power control method is to
be used. Simulation for different real and reactive power references is
to be carried out. The simulation results may be implemented in
practice using hardware. dSPACE/other platforms may be used for
getting the control signals for the hardware.

54 BNC3 Development of A novel poly-phase permanent magnet BNC
transverse flux machine
Permanent magnet machines are usually classified as: Radial flux
machines (RFM), axial flux machines (AFM) and transverse flux
machines (TFM). The main advantage of TFM over RFM and AFM
is its high torque density. TFMs have been studied in greater
detail since 1988, but in past two years research in the field of
TFMs is being accelerated. This project relates to a poly-phase
permanent magnet transverse flux machine. There are many
advantages of this topology over other topologies of TFM like:
simple construction; easy to manufacture and utilization of low
cost Indian magnets leading to reduction in production cost.
Project will involve design, optimization and prototype
development of the machine. Applications of this machine will
be electric bicycle, cooler, motor for water pumping etc.
Literature survey reveals that this new topology which will be
developed is un-attempted and hence might fetch a patent.
Patent application is already made. The project comes under
Centre of Excellence Smart Renewable Energy Systems [CoE-
SRES] and hence will be completely funded by the centre.

55 BNC4 Title: A single phase hybrid excited transverse flux generator BNC
Permanent magnet generators have a constant field excitation
hence terminal voltage control is not possible. To overcome this
difficulty hybrid excited generators are used, i.e field flux is
produced by permanent magnets as well as excitation coil. To
maintain the machine brushless in spite of being hybrid excited
remains a challenge. This project relates to a single phase hybrid
excited transverse flux generator which is brushless. Project will
involve design, optimization and prototype development of the
machine. Application of this machine is low power rating
generator for wind turbine.
Literature survey reveals that this new topology which will be
developed is un-attempted and hence might fetch a patent.
Patent is already applied. The project comes under Centre of
Excellence Smart Renewable Energy Systems [CoE-SRES] and
hence will be completely funded by the centre
56 BNC5 Title: An E-core transverse flux machine BNC
Permanent magnet machines are usually classified as: Radial flux
machines (RFM), axial flux machines (AFM) and transverse flux
machines (TFM). The main advantage of TFM over RFM and AFM
is its high torque density. TFMs have been studied in greater
detail since 1988, but in past two years research in the field of
TFMs is being accelerated. This project relates to an E core
transverse flux machine. The topology of this machine is similar
to the one described in project title 1 except that the machine
has E-shaped core. Advantage of E-shaped laminations is that
they are easily available in market for transformer application.
Also, E-core TFMs are fault tolerant machines. Design of fault
tolerant machines is another important area in the field of
machine design. Project will involve design, optimization and
prototype development of the machine. Applications of this
machine will be electric bicycle, cooler, motor for water
pumping etc. Literature survey reveals that this new topology
which will be developed is un-attempted and hence might fetch
a patent. Patent draft is in progress. The project comes under
Centre of Excellence Smart Renewable Energy Systems [CoE-
SRES] and hence will be completely funded by the centre

57 BNC6 Title: An Axial Flux Hybrid Excited Machine BNC+R

Over the past decade, axial-flux permanent magnet (AFPM) TU
synchronous machines have gained attention for a variety of
applications, wherever axial compactness, high torque density
and efficiency are required. Examples include hybrid electric
vehicle propulsion, aircraft propulsion, combined heat and power
generation, household appliances, wind energy generation,
portable gensets and automotive starter/alternators .The main
drawback of AFPM machines arises at the area of field
weakening as in the case with RFM. To overcome this difficulty
hybrid excited machines are used, i.e. field flux is produced by
permanent magnets as well as excitation coil. This project relates
to an (AFHEM) which will overcome the drawbacks of present
axial hybrid excited machines. Project will involve design,
optimization and prototype development of the machine.
Literature survey is in the process. The project comes under
Centre of Excellence Smart Renewable Energy Systems [CoE-
SRES] and hence will be completely funded by the centre.
