JOB HAZARD ANALYSIS AND CONTROL PROGRAMME

GENERAL

NOTE:

THESE ASSESSMENTS HAVE BEEN COMPILED TO IDENTIFY THE POTENTIAL RISKS AND THE
PRECAUTIONS REQUIRED TO ELIMINATE, REDUCE OR ADEQUATELY CONTROL THEM.
ASSESSMENTS ARE TO BE READ IN CONJUNCTION WITH JOBCARDS AND METHOD STATEMENTS.

TITLE: GRINDING

POTENTIAL RISK: PARTICLES IN THE EYE

1. THIS IS A COMMON INJURY WITHIN THE ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AND MUST BE
STRICTLY CONTROLLED
2. AT ALL TIMES, IT MUST BE REMEMBERED THAT THE EYE IS NOT ONLY IRREPLACEABLE BUT IS ALSO
THE SOFTEST POINT OF ENTRY TO THE BRAIN.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:

1. The company operates a mandatory eye protection policy. This shall be adhered to at all times.
2. Goggles or a full-face mask shall be worn at all times when carrying out grinding. Safety glasses shall also
be worn underneath a face visor.
3. Screens around the operator are essential to protect other personnel. These may be either plywood or
flame retardant tarpaulins.
4. Permit to work requirements shall be strictly adhered to at all times.

POTENTIAL RISK: MAJOR BURNS/GRAZING

1. GRAZING TYPE BURNS ARE NOT UNCOMMON. THIS IS GENERALLY CAUSED BY KICKBACK OR
MOMENTARY LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE GRINDER BY THE OPERATOR.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:

1. Toolbox talks are an effective method of “RAISINFG THE INDIVIDUAL’S AWARENESS” to hazards of
grinding.
2. Personnel shall maintain a two handed control of the grinder at all times.

POTENTIAL RISK: VIBRATION WHITE FINGERS

1. LOSS OF BLOOD CIRCULATION IN FINGERS CREATING PERMANENT NUMBNESS, INCURABLE ONCE


CONTRACTED.
2. CONTRACTED BY LONG PERIODS OF USING VIBRATING EQUIPMENT

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:

1. Full personal protective equipment to be used at all times. (i.e. gloves.) Natural breaks to be taken as and
when required.
2. This hazards shall be identified at the toolbox talks stage

POTENTIAL RISK: SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS


1. EXTENSION LEADS TRAILING AROUND WORKSITES CAUSE TRIPPING HAZARDS WITH SERIOUS
POTENTIAL INJURY

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:

1. Ensure good housekeeping at all times.


2. Cables shall be tied / secured overhead to remove the hazard.
3. If cables must run across the floor, then they shall be secured or covered to prevent personnel from
tripping or highlighted with barrier tape.

POTENTIAL RISK: FIRE OR EXPLOSION.

1. CAN OCCUR BY THE IGNITION OF COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS OR BY GRINDING IN GAS ENRICHED


ATMOSPHERES.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:

1. Good housekeeping shall be maintained both before and during all works activities.
2. Fire blanket shall e used to protect equipment and other personnel
3. Fire Extinguisher shall be on hand at all times or fire hose reel in place
4. Firewatcher shall be present during all hot work activities.
5. Flame retardant coveralls shall be worn at all times
6. Atmosphere shall be tested for gas prior to work commencement
7. Personnel shall ensure that they can isolate their equipment and tools. Etc within a suitable time. i.e. five
seconds, if not then equipment shall be repositioned.

POTENTIAL RISK: OVEREXPOSURE TO FUMES

1. CAUSED BY GRINDING EXOTIC MATERIALS SUCH AS CUNIFER, NICKEL, ETC. OR BY USING GRINDING
METHODS TO REMOVE COATINGS AND PAINT, WHICH MAY CONTAIN TOXIC MATERIALS SUCH AS LEAD
OR ISOCYANATES

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:

1. Personnel shall use localized (filtered) fume extraction during paint removal operations or when grinding
exotic materials.
2. Operators shall ensure that they wear suitable respiratory protective equipment. i.e. air fed face shield.
3. Personnel immediate vicinity of work shall wear martindale masks.
4. Where necessary the work area shall be enclosed to protect other workers and/or barrier erected around
the work area to prevent access.

TEMPORARY ACTIVITIES

1. GRINDING DAMAGE TO EYES, FACE, HEAD, Personnel shall wear suitable PPE such as
HEARING, HANDS AND Hardhat, Eye Protection, Full
OTHER BODY PARTS. Face Protection, Hand
Gloves, Ear Plug and Safety
Shoes.
Personnel shall wear Full Body Harness
and it shall be TIED OFF to
strong materials when
working at heights.
Grinding operations shall be controlled by
using Fire Blanket in order to
prevent the risk of injury to
other personnel from sparks
and metal splinters.
Provide adjustable Vise clamp as
necessary as practicable
when grinding small object.
Grinder shall be TURNED OFF when not in
use and check its switch
before plugging to outlet.
ELECTRICAL SHOCK Power supply cord shall be double
insulated. Electrical cord
shall not be nearest to the
object being grinded.
Electrical cord insulation shall be in good
condition or in good repair.
WHEEL BURST Grinders shall be maintained in good
condition and inspected prior
to use.
Damaged DISC should not be used.
Machine Guard shall be fitted to Grinder
as per manufacturer
recommendation.
A trained and authorized personnel using
proper disc spanner shall
carry out changing of
abrasive wheels.
Modification or adjusting Machine Guard is
not acceptable. Check
manufacturer’s
recommendation.
FIRE Grinding operations in live plant areas
shall be carried out in
accordance with the Permit
To Work requirements such
as providing Standby Fire
Extinguisher, Water Fire
Hose and Enclosed Fire
Blanket.
Provide a Fire Watcher as necessary as
practicable.
Housekeeping in the areas at grinding
operations shall be
maintained to a highest
level. All Flammable or
Combustible materials should
be removed from the area
prior to start of work.
