1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

PART -A (01+01+01+02=05 Marks)
A1. Engineering analysis is generally done employing experimental, analytical and computational
methods of analysis. Generally experimental analysis is employed to perform stress analysis using
resistive strain gages and optical methods under the static and dynamic loads of machine parts and
system. Analytical method of engineering analysis is available only for simple engineering problems
and is generally employed at preliminary stages of design. In comparison, experimental methods of
analysis provide more accurate results than analytical methods. On the other hand computational
methods like FEA are widely accepted in almost all engineering disciplines. These methods are often
used as alternative to the experimental test methods. Approximate solution to any complex
engineering problem can be reached by employing computational methods. In this background it
may be stated that,
Debate on the above statement and the debate written should essentially include:
Note: Problem to be solved using Raleigh-Ritz method will be given by the course leader
Stress analysis of a structural member involves predicting the components of stresses at critical
locations. These predicted stress components are converted into equivalent stresses to evaluate
possibility of failure employing appropriate theory of failure. You are given an example of state of
stress at a point defined in terms of stress components and all other data required. Perform stress
analysis and prepare a report. The report should include the following:
3
B2.1 Discussion on stress components, equivalent stresses and failure theories
B2.2 Calculation of equivalent stresses as per the theory of failures mentioned in the
example
B2.3 Comments on possibility of failure
B2.4 Usefulness of these concepts in FE analysis
Note: Details of stress state and other data will be provided by the course leader
