4.2.2 Forms and their supports shall be designed so as not to be damage previously placed
structures.
4.2.3 Forms shall be properly braced or tied together to maintain position and shape.
4.2.4 Forms shall be built to resist the pressures to which they will be subjected and to limit
deflection to a practicable minimum with in specified tolerance. (ACI 318M-08, Sec.
5.5.1 & 6.1.3)
4.2.5 Foundations for formwork on ground, such as blinding concrete, compacted fill or grade,
spread footing, piles or slabs shall be provided (ACI 347-04, Sec 2.7).
4.2.6 Reused forms to ensure that they have not become damaged, distorted, disassembled or
otherwise unable to perform as designed (ACI347-04, Sec, 5.51).
4.2.7 Block outs, inserts, sleeves, anchors, water stops and other embedded items shall be
properly identified, positional and secured in the forms to resist all forces while concrete
is being placed and hardens. (ACI 347-04, Sec, 3.2.4.2)
4.2.8 Shores shall be installed plumb and with adequate bearing and bracing.
4.2.9 The size of forms ties and clamps shall be as specified in the IFC drawing.
4.2.10 Forms shall be thoroughly cleaned of all dirt, mortar and foreign matter and coated with a
released agent before each use.
4.3.2 Reinforcing steel bars shall conform to SASO SSA2, hot-rolled, high tensile, deformed
steel. These bars shall be acceptable under ACI 318M specified limitation of 422 MPA
(60.0 KSI).
4.3.3 Coated reinforcing steel bars shall be fusion-bonded Epoxy in accordance with 09-
SAMSS-106.
4.3.5 Coated reinforcements shall be Fusion Bonded Epoxy in accordance with 09-SAMSS-
106.
4.3.6 Care should be taken to avoid any damage to the coated rebar during shipment, handling,
fabrication and placement of the coated re-bars. The extent of the damage and repair of
the coating shall be in accordance with 09-SAMSS-106.
4.3.7 Table 2 defines the minimum concrete cover measured from outer most rebar (tie bar),
that shall be provided for reinforcement of cast-in-place concrete structures.
4.3.8 All sleeves, inserts, anchor bolts, water stops and other embedded items shall be installed
in accordance with the design drawings and supported against displacement.
4.3.9 The design of anchor bolts shall be in accordance to SAES-Q-005 and the materials shall
be in accordance to 12-SAMSS-007.
4.3.10 Projecting steel items (such as grating angles, slide plates, steel plates, etc.) which are
attached to the formwork and cast at the concrete surface shall be hot dip galvanized in
accordance with ASTM A123 or coated with the zinc rich epoxy primer in APCS-1C of
SAES-H-3.3.11. Additionally, the steel attachment, which anchors these items to the
concrete, shall be similarly galvanized or coated.
4.3.12 Reinforcing steel bars, anchor bolts or other steel embedment’s shall not be used as the
means for grounding electrical equipment and shall not be tied to grounding neutral
conductors, or any part of the lightning protection system.
4.3.13 Conduits, pipes and other items made from aluminum shall not be embedded in structural
concrete unless effectively coated to prevent aluminum-concrete reaction.
b) When placement operation would involve dropping the concrete more than one
(1) meter, the concrete mix should be deposited on a chute to avoid segregation
of cement and aggregates.
b) Concrete should normally be placed in layers of 12”/18” thick (300 to 500 mm)
thick depending on the length of the vibrator head. The layers should be
deposited in level layers to prevent vibrators moving concrete horizontally
causing segregation.
c) Overlap vibrations to obtain a more suitable concrete mix in the forms. The
vibrator should penetrate rapidly into the concrete layer and, at least, six (6)
inches into the preceding layer. The vibrator shall be held stationary, normally
between 5 to 15 seconds to consolidate the concrete mix adequately. Pounding
results when the concrete is overly vibrated.
d) Do not place a concrete layer when the preceding layer has been rendered to start
a permanent set. Concrete layers should be at the plastic condition.
4.5.2 Equipment made of aluminum alloys shall not be used for pump lines, tremies, or chutes
used to discharge concrete from a truck mixer.
4.5.3 Concrete shall not be placed prior to a recorded pre-placement inspection and
authorization to proceed by Saudi Aramco.
4.5.4 Raking shall not be used for movement of concrete after placement.
4.5.7 Concrete shall not be dropped freely where reinforcing will cause segregation nor shall it
be dropped freely more than 1 m.
4.5.8 Concrete shall be deposited as near as possible in its final position to avoid segregation
due to re-handling or flowing.
4.5.10 Concrete shall be placed on a clean surface. Standing water shall be removed prior to
placement of concrete.
4.5.11 Use of precast concrete or mortar blocks as bar supports and spacers discussed in ACI
301- 05, shall be prohibited. However, the use of PVC Schedule 80 pipe as spacer is
allowed. The PVC pipe shall be notched at the bottom to allow the ingress of concrete.
Typical samples shall be submitted for Supervisor of Civil Engineering Unit / CSD for
approval.
4.5.12 Finishing of concrete shall be in accordance with ACI 301 - 05, and ACI 302.1R unless
otherwise specified in the construction drawings or job specification.
4.6 Curing
4.7.1 Structural concrete shall be continuously water cured in accordance with
recommendations of ACI 305R, ACI 308 and as modified below. To avoid self-
desiccation of the concrete mix, only water curing method shall be used to cure the
structural concrete.
4.7.2 Maximum total dissolved solids in water used for curing shall not exceed 1000 parts per
million.
4.7.3 Water curing shall be continuous until the compressive strength has reached 70% of the
specified strength,
4.7.4 The saturated burlaps shall be covered with a plasticized sheet vapor barrier, minimum
0.15 mm (6 mils) in thickness and shall be kept in contact with the concrete surface at all
times.
4.8.2 All concrete surfaces in direct contact with earth shall be coated with two coats of coal tar
or bitumen coating that conforms to APCS-3 or APCS-10 of SAES-H-101. The coating
shall be compatible with the curing compounds.
