Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

Education is essential for the development of society. The more educated the people of a
society are, the more civilized and well discipline the society will be (Chowa, G., Masa, R., &
Tucker, J., 2003). Mainly, family has a responsibility to socialize children for making them
productive members of a society. The more the parents involve in the process of imparting
education to their children, the more the children might excel in their academic career and to
become productive and responsible members of society. The academic achievement of students
may not only depend on the quality of schools and the teacher, rather on the extent of parent
involvement has a vital role to play in it. According to Adewumiet.al.(2002) that parent has vital
roles to play in the life of a child. Parenting involvement is a catch-all term for many different
activities including home, good parenting, helping homework, talking to teachers, attending school
functions, through taking part in school governance. When schools work together with families to
support learning, children tend to succeed not just in schools but throughout their lives. According
to these researchers, the most accurate prediction of a students’ achievement in school is not the
income nor the social status, but the extent to which the students’ parent is able to create a home
environment that encourages learning and to express high expectations for their children’s
achievement and future careers. Parental involvement in school has been linked with academic
achievement. Previous researchers stated that parental involvement has a powerful impact on the
children’s attainment. The impact of parental involvement arises from parental values and
educational aspirations and that these are exhibited continuously through parental enthusiasm and
positive parenting style.

that people have in response to events that threaten or challenge them. Stress can be good or bad.
Sometimes, it can be helpful, providing people with the extra energy or alertness they need and
could give a runner the edge he or she needs to persevere in a marathon, for example. Good kind of
stress is called eustress. Unfortunately, stress is often not helpful and can even be harmful when not
managed effectively. Stress also can increase the risk of developing health problems such as
cardiovascular disease and anxiety disorders. The bad kind of stress is called distress.

Stress is the effect of disruptive or upsetting situations which cause in response to adverse
external situation. As college students, we are more influenced of encountering involuntary
situations or conflicts causing us to experience feeling like frustration, anxiety and having fear of
what we cannot control. Face academic demands, social involvement, family and daily
responsibilities are the causes that are faced among the college students. By not knowing how deal
with meeting and demands of being a college student and some having a full time job or a family to
cater too can create a lot of pressure and cause stress. There are a lot of life changing decisions we
have to make and challenges we face daily. Some of those challengers can be classes, difficulties
with our schedule, academic and financial obstacles. At times it seems impossible to find balance
between school and friends, family, part time or full-time jobs and relationships. Thus, this survey
study is carried out to identify the factors associated with the stress among the students of KMPh,
the effects of stress that can be experience and to recommend suitable and appropriate actions that
can be taken to overcome the problem.

In life, stress is unavoidable. Everyone, students included, experience stress at one

moment or another and in a variety of ways. Studies conducted to establish how stress affect
performance of a student have convincingly shown that, while low levels of stress can improve
concentration for short periods of time, too much stress affects students negatively. It affects your
ability to concentrate, causes sleep disorders and leads to depression. The stress of school is a very
real, and has a negative impact on students across the country. Stress is your body's way of
responding to any kind of demand or threat. Stress is a common problem that affects almost all of
us at some point in our lives. Based on studies, stress can kill one's life. Parents should be more

5

aware on this issue because children are the common target of stress. They must provide proper
guidance and a full support that children needs so they can feel more at ease. Too much stress can
affect students’ performance on school. It can worsen every student’s concentration; can cause
sleeping disorder that leads to depression.

In recent years, it happens sometimes that students suffer from physical or mental illness
which even leads to temporary absence from school or stopping.
In 2013, a report on changes of numbers of students, from the Philippine daily inquirer point out
that biggest factor that results school failure is stress. Students suffer from chronic stress; this
chronic condition is described as post-traumatic stress disorder.

study would give ideas and knowledge on how stress it would affect the environment of the
students inside the school. The goal of this research study is to identify the factors causing stress
and what is the possible solution for it. This study deemed significant to the following stakeholders:

Students – For them to be focused on their study and they can be better in terms of academic.
Parents – For them to be assured that their child/children are safe and comfortable inside their
school.
Teachers –to let them know that the stress is one of the reasons why their students are slacking off
and getting low grades. This study could also help the teachers to improve or make some ways to
lessen the stress to students.
Future Researchers –this study provide as a reference for the future researchers and enable to do
more research study about the stress in order to help the students.

Assumption of the Study

In life, stress is unavoidable. Everyone, students included, experience stress at one

moment or another and in a variety of ways. Studies conducted to establish how stress affect
performance of college students have convincingly shown that, while low levels of stress can
improve concentration for short periods of time, too much stress affects students negatively. It
affects your ability to concentrate, causes sleep disorders and leads to depression. The stress of
college is a very real, and has a negative impact on students across the country. It’s not all bad. A
little stress can actually help students perform a little better. The key word there is “little.” When
you are stressed out, your body releases chemicals to your brain in an attempt to help it focus, and
pushes adrenaline into the bloodstream so as to heighten your senses. In turn, your heightened
senses help you hone in and focus on the task at hand. A little stress can be helpful for students, but
for a very short time. But here’s the bad side. Over time, the tension increases, compelling you to
put more effort into successfully relieving causes of stress. Then your brain fights against itself
instead of working on a task. While grade 11 student lives can be stressful, by adopting the above
techniques you’ll be able to better manage your stress and concentrate on your studies. After a

tiring day in class, you’ll be surprised how your stress fades away as your mood improves. Also, do
your assignments in time, and plan ahead on how to revise for your exams to avoid stressing
yourself at the last minute.

Scope and Delimitation

The topic of the researchers that would be discussed in this chapter is all about
Solutions on Major Factor of Stress that Affect the Grade 11 students. It would be discussed
through the ideas and information that gathered inside the school by the researcher. It will
focused on factors that affecting the study habits on the academic performance of the Grade 11
students of University of Manila and what is the possible solution in a certain stress.
The issue that been said would discussed to the entire group. The researchers conducted
an interview to the selected grade eleven ABM and HUMSS students that supported the
study and gathered more ideas and information. For them to know what are the solution in
this problem and possible to lessen the stress in school.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter, the literatures and studies were carefully selected and deliberated upon on
the basis of relatively and reliability of the information presented. This literatures and studies help
the researchers to have an evidence and proof to their study. Also, this chapter discusses the
relevance of the study.

Stress Coping Strategies

Based on Rogers and Yassin (2003), it is important for students to develop different coping
strategies in order to encounter and manage stressful conditions. If not handled well, the stressors
that originated from financial problems, sleep deprivation, societal activities and many more can
affect student’s ability to perform. Coping strategy refers to ways to handle stressful and
troublesome circumstances. It may seem that there’s nothing you can do about your stress level.
The bills aren’t going to stop coming, there will never be more hours in the day for all your errands,
and your career or family responsibilities will always be demanding. But you have a lot more
control than you might think. In fact, the simple realization that you’re in control of your life is the
foundation of stress management.

Managing stress is all about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions,
your schedule, your environment, and the way you deal with problems. The ultimate goal is a
balanced life, with time for work, relationships, relaxation, and fun – plus the resilience to hold up
under pressure and meet challenges head on.

Ways to lessen the stress

According to Newman and Hermans (2008), there are many ways to lessen the stress that
experience students in school.

1. Assess stressors and change your responses. This process involves evaluating what makes you
stressful and to understand them.

Once you find what causes your stress, focus on it.

The next phase is to change your responses. Try to remain calm and focused during a stressful
situation.

This will allow you to act appropriately and effectively.

2. Find people who understand you (e.g. family members, friends, classmates, or school
counsellors). Social support is one of the most effective ways of coping stress.

3. Learn to laugh. Laughing is the most effective medicine.

Previous scientific studies had found that laughing promotes positive well-being and healthy body.
Good news is it’s free!

4. Plan your school activities. Planning is very important in students’ lives.

If you plan all your academic works, you will smoothly sail in your academic journey.

Students who do not plan are most likely cram during exams and deadlines.

Be cautious, cramming is not only bad for your grades; it also affects your health.

5. Relax. Too much of good thing is bad thing. You’re not a robot. Your body needs time to recover
all the energy that you spent.

Have a break.

6. Eat healthy foods. Most of the time, students consume instant foods (instant coffee, instant
noodles, etc.).

Instant foods are not healthy. Eating those kinds of foods can cause another harm to your body.

7. Mange your finances. Learn the art of frugality. Spend your money only on important needs not
wants.

8. Develop mindfulness. This involves interacting with your environment, focusing on positive
emotions, and objective reasoning.

Effects of Stress on Students

According to Morris, Books and May (2003), the effect of stress on students can be many.
Several studies had found that stress has a negative effect on students’ ability to concentrate. If you
are a student, you tend to comply with the multi-layered school requirements simultaneously. This
burden alone is enough to make you unable to concentrate. The human brain cannot attend to
several stimuli at a single period of time. Thus, cramming is not effective. It can only make things
worse. They started that pressure in stress and stressors is not needed consistently for all the college
students, where in they have been discover the differentiation between traditional and non-
traditional .In preferring the present study it may include the same attributes on academic issues,
loneliness, financial and social relationship problems. In short, the following studies present the
same kind of manner.

According to Dixon and Ro (2005), all of those people encounter stress that leads to rapid
bodily changing which makes feelings of emotions unrest causing the body strains with the body
part. Repeated stressful situations, may lead to cause rapid tension and pressures that contributed to
physical and psychological problems.

Dealing with academic stress

According to Beilock, S (2011), attending college is the positive experience for many, yet
many students also Experience College as chronically stressful due to academic requirements i.e.,
tests, papers, presentations. Childhood stress is increasing in both its frequency and severity. Some
factors that may contribute to this stress include: the pressure on children to mature emotionally and
psychologically at increasing earlier ages, a decrease in the number of caring parents and
subsequent reduction in parent’s love and support. As a child grows and reaches puberty a
psychological metamorphosis takes 49 places and this is adolescence stage. It is developmental
period during which a growing person makes a transition from childhood to adulthood. Academic
problems have been reported to be the most common source of stress for students Aldwin &
Greenberger (2002). Villafinnia (2004) observed that the most irritating daily hassles were usually
school-related stressors such as constant pressure of studying, too little time, writing term papers,
taking tests, future plans, and boring instructors. Stress associated with academic activities has been
linked to various negative outcomes, such as poor health, depression, and poor academic
performance. Lesko and Summerfield (2004) found a significant positive correlation between the
incidence of illness and the number of exams and assignments. Similarly, Aldwin and Greenberger
(2005) observed that perceived academic stress was related to anxiety and depression in college
students.

How stress affects academic Performance

According to Health News (2015), students who are suffering from high levels of stress
could become disorganized and uncertain of their goals and priorities. This could lead to an
inability to effectively budget and manage their time. Moreover, students who are highly stressed
tend to procrastinate and neglect responsibilities such as completing assignments and meeting
deadlines. Of course, this will affect their study skills and the quality of their work. A high level of
stress reduces students' ability to concentrate on their studies. Consequently, it makes it difficult for
them to memorize facts for tests.

12
UNIVERSITY OF MANILA
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION

Even more, poor concentration could limit students' ability to think critically or at optimal
levels when they write their papers or during tests. Poor judgment could lead to weak responses on
exams and on their course work. Memory is vital to students' academic success, and forgetfulness is
one of the symptoms of being stressed. It is clear then that this could adversely affect students'
quality of work. When students are unable to recall necessary details to answer questions, this could
lead to poor exam results and limited participation in class activities. Stress is characterized by
persistent daily worry and restlessness. So when students are constantly worried, this takes the
focus off important tasks to be completed at school. Because of excessive worry about different
problems, students might find it difficult to fall asleep. Consequently, the work they complete could
be mediocre or they could miss assignment deadlines. They could end up failing courses. One of
the symptoms of stress is irritability which could affect students' relationships with peers, family
members, and teachers. Students could find that a significant amount of the work in some courses
take place in groups.

Students are required to work with other students to achieve the learning objectives. If they
are stressed, they could be short-tempered and irritable, and this could affect the cohesiveness of
the group. The result could be the group’s inability to effectively achieve its goals. Students who
are highly stressed, tend to isolate themselves from others. In doing so, they cut themselves off
from a valuable support network. Family, peers and other connections could be helpful links in
assisting them in achieving their personal and educational goals. In response to stressors, students
could get preoccupied and overwhelmed with the stressful situations giving little attention to
relationships. Lack of nurturing relationships could affect their mental health leading to problems
such as reduced productivity in their school work, in the form of failed projects and poor test
scores.

Benefit of Stress

According Lim (2007), stress is a burst of energy that basically advises you on what to do.
In small doses, stress has many advantages. For instance, stress can help you meet daily challenges
and motivates you to reach your goals. In fact, stress can help you accomplish tasks more

13
UNIVERSITY OF MANILA
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION

efficiently. It can even boost memory. Stress is also a vital warning system, producing the fight-or-
flight response. When the brain perceives some kind of stress, it starts flooding the body with
chemicals like epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol. This creates a variety of reactions such as
an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Plus, the senses suddenly have a laser-like focus so you
can avoid physically stressful situations — such as jumping away from a moving car — and be
safe.
In addition, there are various health benefits with a little bit of stress. Researchers believe that some
stress can help to fortify the immune system. For instance, stress can improve how your heart
works and protect your body from infection. In one study, individuals who experienced moderate
levels of stress before surgery were able to recover faster than individuals who had low or high
levels.

Stress negatively affects grades

According to Lumontod III (2017), because a stressed student won’t be able to concentrate
on school activities, there is a high possibility that s/he may drop out from school. In the
American College Health Association National College Health Assessment report alone in 2010,
there was 25 percent of students suffered from having a decreased in their grades. Those students
also had difficulties to finish their courses. These are just a few of the negative effect of stress on
students. When I was a student though, I only experienced the effect mentioned above (decrease
in sleep). It was because, unlike the majority of students, I had my own approach to deal with
academic stress. As a student, you have some sort of freedom to direct your own life inside the
campus. One of the biggest parts of such freedom is to figure out how you’re going to approach
scholastic challenges. Fortunately, you have a good chance to successfully overcome stress. Time
management is what most students need. Finishing your projects or papers ahead of time can
make your school life easier. You need to weigh your priorities.

Method and Procedures

This chapter discusses the method of research, population and sample, the instrument that
will be used, the data gathering procedure, and the statistical tools that will be applied in the data
gathered.

Method of Research

This research is a Quantitative Descriptive type of study. This descriptive study utilized the
Solutions on Major Factors of Stress that Affect the Grade 11 student s in University of Manila. A
research design is the set of methods and procedures used in collecting and analysing measures of
the variables specified in the research problem research. The design of a study defines the study
type (descriptive, correlational, semi-experimental, experimental, review, meta-analytic) and sub-
type (descriptive-longitudinal case study), research problem, hypotheses, independent and
dependent variables, experimental design, and, if applicable, data collection big black c methods
and a statistical analysis plan. Research design is the framework that has been created to find
answers to research questions.

The Respondents

15
UNIVERSITY OF MANILA
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION

The researcher’s criteria in choosing their participants are; the participant should be
currently studying in the University of Manila. The participant should be Grade 11, because the
researchers know that the participants are capable to produce more solutions in coping with stress.
The participants can contribute ideas on what are the major factors of stress and how to prevent and
cope with it.

Description of Research Instrument

The survey questionnaire was used as the main data gathering instrument for this study. In
this survey, five choices were provided for every statement. The choices represented the degree of
perception of each respondents has on the given statement. The scale belong was use to interpret
the total responses of all the respondents for every survey.

Statement by computing the weighted mean using the Liker scale:

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step that the researchers did was to ask permission participants which are the
Grade 11 students of The University of Manila if they can conduct an interview with them. When
the respondent agreed, the questionnaire could be distributed to respondent. Explain the answer
criteria. Give them enough time and time to answer. The other member of the group should observe
the respondents to avoid cheating.

Collect the paper individually to ensure that the respondents answer all the questions.

assigned. After the researcher gathered data to the respondents they can now proceed to the
computer for the tallying of the answers.

The researchers will ask some question to specified number of respondents that related to
the topic. The response of the respondents would give the researcher introductory statement,
provide information, purpose and potential use of data regarding to the topic.

Ethical consideration is provided to give respect to the respondents. Some information

that given by the respondents is personal or confidential information, if the respondents will agree
then the researcher would include it.The importance of this method is that the interviewee can
evaluate and express their ideas without any complaining and hesitation through verbal
communication.

Statistical Treatment Applied

The researchers chose enough number of students to be surveyed using the simple random
research design and using Slovin’s formula. They were given questionnaires to answer and the
gathered data will be analysing using Likert’s scale. Any missed answer of the students result to
invalid data. The answers are recorded and counted for analysis based on the perspective of the
respondents.

Frequency distribution is to summarize data that shows the majority of the gathered data which
tells the result of the research study. It displays the frequency of various outcomes in a sample.
Each entry in the table contains the frequency or count of the occurrences of values within a
particular group or interval, and in this way, the table summarizes the distribution of values in the
sample.

1) Decide the maximum number of sample using Slovin’s formula.

2) Calculate the frequency per rank in Likert’s scale

3) Get the sum and the majority of each item respective to the rank per category

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation
Summary
Stress is the feeling that is created when we react to particular events. It can make you feel
threatened or upset. Based on Rogers and Yassin (2003), the stressors that originated from financial
problems, sleep deprivation, societal activities and many more can affect student’s ability to
perform. We choose this topic because the most common factors of suicidal is stress. The
researchers conclude that the following problems causing stress is originated from financial
problems, sleep deprivation, societal activities and many more can affect student’s ability to
perform. In order to lessen the destructive consequence of stress almost 55% of the respondents
strongly agreed, 35% agreed, and 10% moderately agreed that listening music and relaxing will

help the respondents to lessen the stress they experience.

Conclusion
The researchers conclude that the following problems causing stress is originated from
financial problems, sleep deprivation, societal activities and many more can affect student’s ability
to perform. Based on Rogers and Yassin (2003) In order to lessen the stress the researchers found
the ways which are the Time management, relaxing and listening music.
Through the gathered data 86% of the respondent is both strongly agree and agree that the
stress is a hindrance to study of the grade 11 students of University of Manila. The 40% of the
respondents is strongly agreed, 11% respondents agreed and 49% of respondents moderately agreed
that laziness, failing grades and lack of time management iis causing stress.
In order to lessen the destructive consequence of stress almost 55% of the respondents
strongly agreed, 35% agreed, and 10% moderately agreed that listening music and relaxing will
help the respondents to lessen the stress they experience.

Recommendation
The researchers recommends their study to the future professionals as well as the
teachers, school staffs and students especially the senior high school students. The researchers
also recommend to the adolescent should be able to understand this kind of problem, for them to be
aware of what are the situations of our environment especially in school.
