Example 1

Example
Let the life time of a radio in years, manufactured by a certain
company follows exponential distribution with average life 15 years.
What is the probability that, of eight such radios, at least four last
more than 15 years ?

Example 2

Example
The life length X of an electronic component follows exponential
distribution. There are two processes by which component may be
manufactured. The expected life length os the component is 100
hours, if the process I is used to manufacture, while 150 hours, of the
process II is used. The cost of manufacturing a single component by
process I is Rs 10/- while it is Rs 20/- for process II. Moreover if the
component last less than the guaranteed life of 200 hours, a loss of
Rs 50/- is to borne by the manufacturer. which process is
advantageous to manufacturer ?

Example 3

Example
If number of calls received in a call center follows Poisson distribution
with mean number of calls received is one every 5 minutes, then find
the probability that we must wait at most four minutes before the first
call is received.

Example 4

Example
Calls to an internet service provider are made according to Poisson
process at a constant expected rate during the early morning hours.
It is currently 2 AM and the service provider lines are all open. What
is the probability that all the lines will remain open for the next five
minutes if the service provider expects 10 calls over the next 30
minutes ?

Example 5

Example
Instantaneous surges of electric current occur according to a Poisson
process on a particular line at an expected rate 0.1 per hour. The
electrical system will fail as soon as 4th surges occur. Determine the
probability that the system is still functioning in 25 hours.

Example 6

Example
The time to failure of an electrical component has an exponential
distribution and it is known that 20 percent of the components have
failed by 10 hours. What is the probability that a component is still
working after 100 hours ?
