JORDAN HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA

DISCLOSURE 2019-2020

Grading Scale:
93-100 = A 83-86 = B 73-76 = C 63-66 = D
90-92 = A- 80-82 = B- 70-72 = C- 55-62 = D-
87-89 = B+ 77-79 = C+ 67-69 = D+ 54 and below = F

OBJECTIVES​: Members of the Orchestra represent the finest string players at


Jordan High. Each student is expected to study and experience
orchestral music. Emphasis is placed on improving individual
skills and understanding responsibilities to the ensemble.

EXPECTATIONS: Members of the Orchestra are expected to:


-Pay the ​$45​ Canyons District music participation fee.
-Obtain Black Performance Clothing (see attachment)
-Pay ​$20​ class fee
-Participate in the school musical.
-Attend sectionals and after school rehearsals.
-Instrument rentals are ​$80

MATERIALS: Clean instrument in good working order.


Mutes, shoulder rests, other accessories, pencil, notebook.

ATTENDANCE: Students will be given points for daily preparedness and starter
activities. If a student is absent, equivalent course work must be
done to make up the participation points. Students must be in the
band room assembling their instruments when the bell rings.
Students must be in their seats ready to play 3 minutes after the
bell rings to avoid being marked tardy.

Students who receive NG’s must go to attendance school to remove NG’s

Students with conflicts may make special arrangements with Mr.


Cressall to make-up a NG.
GRADING: The final grade is based on the following areas:

1) Daily participation/class work, preparedness, and attendance:


This includes the following: bringing instruments and materials to
class, engaging in class activities, any written homework or tests,
concert reports. At times it is necessary to combine the strings with
the winds for full orchestra music. These rehearsals will be
scheduled for either Friday mornings before school or Tuesday
afternoons from 2:35pm to 3:15pm. Students are expected to
attend these rehearsals. Students who do not attend at least 85% of
after school rehearsals will not be able to perform at region and
state and may lose concert performance privileges. Absences from
these rehearsals must be excused at least 48 hours in advance.
Special circumstances will be dealt with on an individual basis.
(5% of the final grade)

​ tudents must attend seven sectionals per quarter.


2) Sectionals: S
A sectional is a rehearsal with ones section held before or after
school. These sectionals must last at least 30 min in length. Every
member of the section must be present for credit to be assigned,
unless excused by the director. (20% of final grade)

3) Performances:​ Members of the Orchestra participate in


concerts, clinics, sectionals, assemblies, and the school musical (if
needed). In general, absences from performances will not be
excused. However, in special situations absences will be excused
only if 2 weeks notice has been given. Failure to do so can result
in a loss of all performance credit. Make up for an excused
absence from a performance can be made up by completing the
“concert make-up assignment” as outlined on the make up
handout. Special circumstances will be dealt with on an
individual basis. (35% of the final grade).

4) Playing Tests: ​ Tests will be given on exercises and music from


student’s folders. All playing tests will be given each Friday.
Tests will be presented individually or in small groups. Students
have 1-2 minutes to complete each playing test and 1-2 MINUTES
ONLY! Mr. Cressall will listen to each performance and assign a
grade based on preparedness. Students must receive at least a B+
on playing tests involving festival music in order to perform in
Region and State events. Students may retake these tests at any
time before the event to be able to perform. Individual
circumstances will be taken into consideration. (35% of the final
grade)
5) Notebook Check: N ​ otebooks will be checked each Friday.
Students should be using notebooks to track homework, progress,
to set goals, and to record important dates and information. (5% of
the final grade)

JHS Performing Arts Rehearsal, Assignment, and Performance Test Makeup


Policy:
If a student has an excused absence from class, they have 5 school days to do the required
makeup of the Rehearsal, Assignment, or Performance Test for full credit. If a student
has an unexcused absence from a class, they have 5 school days to do the required
makeup of the daily assignment for a maximum of 60% credit. Rehearsal, Assignment,
and Performance Test makeup are assigned per subject. Please refer to the makeup
assignment handout in the course disclosure.

JHS Performing Arts Missed Performance Makeup Assignment Policy:


In order to be eligible to complete a makeup assignment for a missed performance, a
student must contact the performing arts teacher with a legitimate reason for missing no
later than 3 weeks prior to the performance. In the case of an emergency (severe illness or
injury, death in family, etc.), students can receive an exception to this policy by
presenting appropriate documentation of the event.

Once a student is determined to be eligible to do a missed-performance makeup


assignment. HS Performing Arts Makeup Assignments have two parts. The first part is a
performance makeup, and the second part is a written makeup assignment. For specific
details, students must refer to the makeup assignment that is listed in their teacher’s
disclosure.

JHS Performing Arts Re-do Policy:


Any assignment that is turned in or performed on time that receives a lower grade than an
A may be re-done or re-performed before school or during an appropriate time in class
for a higher grade within two weeks of when the assignment is entered into Skyward. It
is always in the student’s best interest to come to class and do their assignments on time
to the best of their ability and re-do the assignment if he or she would like to raise his or
her grade.

JHS Performing Arts Late Work Policy:


Students may turn in late work up to two weeks after the due date of an assignment for up
to 70% of the total value of the assignment.

-Please show up to on time to all events you are involved with.   


-Honesty means not doing what you want to do but what needs to be done. 
Being a musician takes effort and you must rid yourself of excuses to be 
successful.  
- Arrive early to all rehearsals, meetings, concerts, and region/state events. 
EFFORT: Be on Time 

- Please be in your seat when the bell rings and ready for our daily warm ups. 
- Participate with all your HEART in classroom activities. 
- Do YOUR best, I will work with you from there. 
ACCOUNTABILITY: Be prepared with necessary items and attitudes

Think of others before taking action.

Keep up with your parts through personal practice.

Accept the consequences of lackluster effort. 
-
Remember, this is one of the few activities in life where your effort directly 
influences a large group of people as a whole.  
RESPECT: Treat others as you would like to be treated

Use appropriate language.

Follow instructions and participate even when you don’t want to. Playing 
makes everything better! 
- Electronic devices are to remain off and out of sight unless you are instructed 
otherwise. 
TOLERANCE: Accept others and be inclusive of others 

- Find the positives and strengths in others. We all have gaps in our musical 
training but are all capable of having meaningful musical experiences.   
- Work together with our friends despite ANY differences. 
 

The classroom rules will add to our success in preparing for and producing high quality 
performances. The rules will better prepare you for college and the workforce. For every 
rule there is a consequence. The main point to the rules/consequences is for you to 
realize that everything is contingent upon your choices.
