VoIP stands for ‘Voice

Voice over Internet Protocol
Protocol’ are becoming the part of standard in business
communications worldwide. Many people think that the use of VoIP telephony is illegal in
India. That is not true – but there are some regulations by TRAI / DoT on how and when it
can be used.

According to regulations,, it is legal to use VoIP in India. But, it is illegal to:

• Use VoIP gateways within India

• Terminate VoIP calls to landline/PSTN lines within India

This means that if you are using a softphone or an Internet application like Skype on your
computer to call someone else using a softphone or an application like Skype, there are no
issues. Calls from PCs or softphones are not permitted to call landline/PSTN numbers or
destinations. There are fewer restrictions surrounding VoIP calls in India that terminate to
destinations abroad. If you are a company in India that solely does business with prospects
in India, VoIP is only legal if you are communicating with prospects that are also using
Internet telephony.

Optimizing for VoIP

VoIP telephony is a cost-effective
effective alternative for businesses in India that need to
communicate with prospects abroad. It’s far cheaper to call the United States / Europe from
India via VoIP than it is to pay long distance fees for the same call. But, many businesses in
India are concerned that the transition to VoIP telephony might lead to poor call quality. If
you do not have thee proper infrastructure in place to support VoIP calling, this is true.

Luckily, there are several ways that you can optimize your existing communications
infrastructure for VoIP telephony.

How Bandwidth Affects VoIP Call Quality

Quality?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol – which means that your VoIP calls are routed
over the Internet. Because of this, your VoIP call quality depends on the level of Internet
service that your business uses. If you don’t have enough bandwidth to handle VoIP calls,
you will suffer from poor call quality. So, how do you know how much bandwidth you need
for good VoIP call quality? It’s simple. First, figure out how many concurrent (simultaneous)
calls your business experiences during peak hours. Then, determine what codec your VoIP
provider will use. For most standard codecs, you need anywhere from 85 – 100 kpbs
of bandwidth per concurrent (simultaneous) call.

How Codecs Affect VoIP Call Quality

Quality?
A codec, which is short for encoder
encoder-decoder, converts an audio
o signal (the speaker’s voice)
into a digital packet that can be transmitted via the Internet. Then, it turns the digital packet
back into an audio signal so that the listener can hear you. The codec that your VoIP
provider uses plays a big part in achievi
achieving good call quality.

The most common codecs include:

G.711: The G.711 codec has no compression, and it can be used anywhere that enough
bandwidth is available. It’s commonly used for domestic (in
(in-country)
country) phone calls.

G.722: The G.722 codec requires more ba

bandwidth
ndwidth than the G.711 codec, but it does allow
for better call quality. (It also offers better call quality than calls terminated over the PSTN.)

G.729: The G.729 codec provides reliable call quality and is often used in situations where
bandwidth is at a premium. For international calls, such as calls from India to the United
States, it is a good choice.

How Quality of Service (QoS) Affects VoIP Call Quality?

Quality
For most businesses, adequate bandwidth and the right codec is enough to ensure high VoIP
call quality. If you’re still having call quality problems, like delay, jitter, or packet loss, you
may need to adjust the Quality of Service (QoS) settings on your router. Quality of Service
(QoS) allow you to prioritize specific kinds of data – like voice calls
cal – within your
network. If you configure your QoS settings to prioritize voice traffic, your router will
place it in a reserved queue that takes priority over all other types of data on the
network.

What is Telephone Number Mapping (ENUM)

(ENUM)?

Global practices adopted by different countries advocate use of Telephone Number

Mapping (ENUM) being defined by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in
RFC3761. Internet Architecture Board (IAB) in concurrence with ITU has selected
e164.arpa domain specifically for this purpose. Under IAB supervision .arpa is
considered to be a well-managed,
managed, stable and secure operational environment. A
Single domain structure under e164.arpa becomes the authoritative “root” for E.164
telephone numbers.
ENUM makes extensive use of the Naming Authority Pointer Resource Records
(Defined
ined in RFC 2915) in order to identify available ways and services for contacting a
specific node identified through E.164 number. In nutshell, ENUM involves the
following steps:

@ozgindia ozgindia.com

1. ENUM turns a phone number into a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). It does
this by first adding the city, or area, and country code. For example, 2925-4780
2925 of
Delhi, becomes +91-11--2925-4780, 4780, where 11 is the area code, the 91 represents
the country code for India, and the + indicates that the number is a fully qualified
E.164 number.
2. Then ENUM removes all the characters except for the digits and reverses the
order (e.g.,+91-11-2925
2925-4780
4780 becomes 087452921119). Finally, it places dots
between the digits and appends the domain E164.ARPA at the end of the string
(e.g., 0.8.7.4.5.2.9.2.1.1.1.9.E164.ARPA).
.7.4.5.2.9.2.1.1.1.9.E164.ARPA).
3. Use of ENUM issues a DNS query on the FQDN created in step 1.
4. DNS returns a list of URIs that contains information about what resources,
services, and applications are associated with that specific phone number.
5. ENUM protocol can store more than one type of contact information in the DNS
record that belongs to a specific ENUM number. An ENUM record associated with
an Organization www.o ozg.in
.in might contain instructions for a 52 a. VoIP call (e.g.,
h323: identity@server.o ozg.in or sip: identity@sip.ozg.in)) b. A FAX call (e.g., fax:
identity@fax.ozg.in)
.in) c. EE-Mail communications (e.g., mailto:identity@ozg.in).
mailto:identity@
6. Additional services can be developed in the future and included in the ENUM
name records. A phone nu number
mber in ENUM can therefore be the single contact
number for multiple types of communication to a particular entity irrespective of
type of services like voice call, fax, email, mobile, text messaging, location-based
location
services, and Web pages etc.
