Before judging if Article 370 was good or bad for Jammu and Kashmir, we should try to understand what actually was Article 370.Article 370 of the Indian constitution gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir allowing it to have a separate constitution, a state flag and autonomy over the internal administration of the state. This article, along with Article 35A, defined that the Jammu and Kashmir state’s residents live under a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship, ownership of property, and fundamental rights, as compared to resident of other Indian states. On 6th August 2019, both houses of Parliament and the President passed the resolutions declaring all the clauses of Article 370 to be inoperative. This revolutionary action will definitely produce fruitful results. As the credibility of Jammu and Kashmir’s main political parties have reached the lowest, the separatist leadership who are self- surviving puppets of Pakistan were exploring the youth minds of Kashmir. The ineffective and corrupt malgovernance had hollowed Jammu and Kashmir out of any positive aspirations. It was only the political and policy inertia that was keeping Indian policymakers from challenging Article 370. The minorities and socially and economically backward groups were starving in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Revoking of the Article 370 will not only give them reservation but also help people from other states of India to buy land or property in the state. The corruption was at peak which resulted in people losing faith in government institutions but now after Article 370 has been declared inoperative people will be able to exercise right to information. It will help people know what is going inside the government institutions which was the whole purpose of Right to Information Act. Now the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be divided in two Union Territories namely Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. The people will be able to vote in Assembly elections of Jammu and Kashmir every five years. The Union Government can now implement welfare schemes more properly and have the rights on police and other institutions from the State list. Also for a hold on corruption now Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other investigation agencies can work freely in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier women rights were crushed as a woman from Jammu and Kashmir could not marry a man from other state. Now there will be gender equality which is a main part of the Indian Constitution will be given to the women in Jammu and Kashmir. At last I would repeat the quote by the Member of Parliament from the Ladakh constituency that the revoking of special status of Jammu and Kashmir is bad; but only for two families.
