Well Information
Location ........................................................................................................................................................................................... Offshore, Gulf of Thailand
The Situation
Operators working in the Gulf Of Thailand have many obstacles to deal with. High ROP, acid gases, and extreme temperature gradients
are just a few of the issues in the area. Bottom Hole Static Temperatures (BHST) in excess of 450° F (232.2° C) can wreak havoc on a
drilling fluid system and cause numerous days of NPT along with poor quality well logging data.
The Solution
The RHADIANT fluid, the new ultra-HTHP non-aqueous drilling fluid from M-I SWACO, was the perfect solution. The RHADIANT fluid
system was lab tested to 150° F (232° C), and put to use in the field for another operator in the area. The performance on this well was
just as outstanding as on previous wells. The RHADIANT fluid provided a quality wellbore, and allowed logging without issues at BHST
of 428° F (220° C).
The Results
The RHADIANT fluid with Sarapar-147 base fluid confirmed the expected performance, delivered excellent filtration control and filter
cake quality with stable rheological properties while drilling the 6-1/8” interval. Good hole condition was recorded while tripping several
times with minimal tight spots. Hole cleaning was able to reach and maintain the optimum range with good drilling practices. Six RPM
of 10 - 12 provided good to very good hole cleaning according to VIRTUAL HYDRAULICS† simulation. Addition of different sizes of
Lost Preventive Material (LMP), including G-SEAL PLUS† and G-SEAL HRG FINE† graphite products, to the active system successfully
controlled seepage losses through the expected weak formation on bottom parts of the well. This graphite also helps to avoid excessive
torque and drag.
The trips were smooth and the open hole wireline logging (three runs in total) were performed with minimal issues for over 20 hours of
static condition comparing with wells with the same temperature range.
The Details
The logging runs were successful due to great filter cake quality and good rheological properties provided by the RHADIANT system.
Below are the comments and BHST from the logging runs. Also shown are the six RPM and the LGS of the fluid for the open hole section
of the well.
