Unit: The Middle East and Major World Religions
Essential Question: Why do people live the way they do?
This week's objectives:
1.To identify how trade has impacted cultures in Southwest and Central Asia throughout history.
2.Be able to explain how having a valuable resource affects a region like the Middle East.
3.To explain what are renewable and non-renewable resources and provide real world examples of each.
4.To know the difference between H.D.I and G.D.P and compare and contrast how they represent a region's wealth in
importantly differing ways.
5.To identify what OPEC stands for and analyze the relationship between oil exporting countries and countries that import.
6.To explain the effects of irrigaion on the availablity of water by examining the Aral Sea as a case study.
TUESDAY(11/09)
After reading the handout “How Trade has Impacted Cultures in Southwest and Central Asia” and completing the graphic
organizer (back of handout) record your answers to the following questions:

1.Explain how trade has led to the development of Cuneiform written script for early Mesopotamian cultures.__With the
advancement of cities becoming more complex, out of necessity Mesopotamian civilizations
needed a way to keep track of and record the items they were buying and selling. This record
keeping system led to the development of Cuneiform script, which was the first written language.

2.Explain how trade has led to the accomplishments of the Phoenicians.

As a result of trading with other cultures from different regions along the Mediterranean Sea , the
Phoenicians developed the alphabet. This system allowed them to be more successful trading
with people from other cultures who spoke different languages, since the alphabet was easier to
learn to read and write., having only two symbols.

3.Explain how the Silk Road influenced the culture of the people of Central Asia by bringing them into contact with People
of East and Southwest Asia and Europe.
The Silk Road influenced the culture of people of Central Asia by allowing them to see new types
of products and foods they previously had never been exposed to.

24.2 Analyzing Information and applying knowledge.

5(a)Read the Chart “The Top Ten Oil Reserves in Southwest Asia,2004. Use the data from the chart to
rank
each of Southwest Asia's oil countries according to the size of its proven oil reserves. Label them from
1 (largest reserve) to 10 (smallest reserve.) Shade the three countries with the highest oil reserves.
5(b.) Are oil reserves distributed equally among the countries of Southwest Asia? Explain.
____No, they are not. You can tell they are not distributed equally by looking at the chart from our
reading 24.3 titled “Top Ten Oil Reserves In Southwest Asia” under the lablel “proven oil reserves.”
For example, you can see Saudi Arabia has 261,700 proven oil reserves (in millions of barrels)
while Bahrain has a mere 126. Therefore, from the chart you can see how the reserves are
unequally distributed._______
THURSDAY(11/11)
Please answer these questions after we have read 24.4. Oil Wealth and People's Well-being

6(a)How has oil made many people better off in the Middle East? ____Oil has made many people
better off in the Middle East, because oil money (from exporting) has improved the lives of many
for those countries who have oil reserves and export.

6(b) Use your answer from 6(a) to explain the effects of petroleum production and export on a
country's standard of living.
___Since Standard of Living measures the material wealth, good, services, and luxuries of an
individual, group, or country, it makes sense that the effect s of petroleum production is the
following: Southwest Asian countries who produce and export oil will have a higher standard of
living than those that do not.
Comparing/Contrasting a country's HDI and GDP_____________________
7. Please fill out this graphic organizer after you read and we discuss GDP and HDI.

G.D.P H.D.I.
Gross Domestic H.D.I. Measure more than just a country's gross Human Develop
Product income; it evaluates other aspects of living, such asMent Index.
education and life expectancy.

H.D.I. Is a more accurate reflection of a country's

“wealth.”

G.D.P. Assumes wealth is equally distributed

among every individual

Both measure wealth

Both rank countries according to data that is
collected
Both can increase or decrease

Use your answers for the compare/contrast

8.How do G.D.P. And H.D.I. differ in how they measure the wealth of a country?
___H.D.I. Takes into account more factors than just per capita income for a country, such life
expectancy, infant mortality rate, and literacy rate.
9.Why isn't per capita GDP always a reflection of people's wealth? ____It assumes that wealth is
being distributed equally among all of its citizens, which in reality that is not the case. Therefore, a
country with a smaller population may appear to have a higher per capita GDP than one with a
larger population, since the wealth is being averaged by a smaller pool of people. Our handout
24.4 gives the example of how Saudi Arabia, a country with a larger population, has to divide their
GDP among many more people than a country as say, Kuwait. Therefore, Kuwait's GDP looks
higher than Saudi Arabia's, but only because it is averaged (or divided) among a smaller
population, so there is more left over per capita (meaning, per person.)

FRIDAY (11/12)
After reading 24.5, please answer the following Comprehension check questions.

10(a) Write what OPEC stand for and explain in your own words what it is. ___O.P.E.C. Stands for
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries._They are countries that export oil to other
countries, and they try to control steady prices._

10(b)Name the countries that are OPEC members.

__Algeria______________ ____Iran________________ ____Libya____________________

___Angola_____________ _____Iraq_______________ _____Nigeria___________________

____Ecuador____________ _____Kuwait_______________ ___Saudi

Arabia_____________________
United Arab Emirates Venezuala

10(c)What two realities have limited OPEC's power? ____They do not always act as a united
group, and its members export less than half of the world's crude oil.
10(d)How does being a member of OPEC give a country influence over the world, both economically
and politically? ___Economically, O.P.E.C. Determines how much oil it wants to supply, so they are
somewhat able to control prices. Politically, O.P.E.C. Has influence over importing countries who
depend on their oil exports.

Critical thinking.

11(a) Who are the top three oil consuming countires?

1._United States_____________________
2.__Japan____________________
3.__China____________________

11(b)Why would countries who import oil want to keep a good relationship with oil producing
countries? ___Many countries, including the U.S.A, would want to keep a good relationship with oil
producing countries to have access to their oil. Oil producing countries can impact world economy
through their oil prices giving them much influence in world events.

11(c)Draw a picture of how someone from a country who imports oil, such as the United States, would
feel toward an oil producing country.
