Are you the kind of person who has to have the latest smartphone as soon as it
comes on the market, or are you happy to use your old phone as long as it works?
Some people love gadgets and can’t wait to buy the latest model. They are the first to
purchase the newest smartphone or tablet. Marketing experts call these people “early
adopters”, while the people who don’t like to buy or use new technology are called “late
adopters”.
What are early adopters like? Studies show that they share several
characteristics. First, they are willing to take risks. Second, they are open to new
experiences, whether it’s the latest technological gadget, an unusual food or a trip to a
destination that most people have never heard of. They don’t mind buying an
expensive new product that hasn’t proved its value yet. Third, social status is important
to early adopters. They care what other people think of them and enjoy showing off
their new gadgets.
Businesses have traditionally been interested in attracting early adopters. After
all, they purchase the latest version of a gadget as soon as it comes on the market.
Marketing experts believe that it’s these early adopters who determine if a product will
be successful. In addition, early adopters are often quite influential. When their friends
and family see that they are excited about a product, they will often go out and buy it,
too.
And what about the late adopters? They are often afraid of new technology or
they don’t understand why they need the new product. Businesses are now beginning
to realise that late adopters also influence the success of a product. Late adopters may
not run out to buy every generation of a new product, but when they can’t repair an old
item, they do replace it and then they purchase the latest model that is available. Late
adopters influence their friends and family and can persuade them to buy the latest
products as well.
