A Close Analysis on Intoy the Merman of Marines’ Street

Introduction

Intoy Syokoy is a story about a mussel diver named Intoy who lives in a
place for marginalized people of the society called Kalye Marino. Intoy’s
struggle for an independent life began after the death of his father and the
desertion of his mother. The cause of his father’s death was the severe
depression he felt upon seeing the infidelity of his wife. As a prostitute, his mother
neglected him just to be with other guy. Due to the family problems he was
experiencing, Intoy lost his hope and tried to drown his self, but failed to do it
because he is the mighty “Intoy Syokoy”, the term that was first used to call him
for his veteran skills in diving.

After that incident, the story focused on the friendship matter shared by
Intoy and his friends. His friends also experienced poverty, pain and death of a
love one. Berto, experienced abusement of his uncle and got a STD when he
had an intercourse with a prostitute he met in a bar. Yeye, a college student
who aimed to be a seaman someday like his father, became addicted to risky
manners and drugs when his father died under the persecution of the pirates in
Somalia. Boyet, a thief of phones was jailed. And Doray, a simple girl who
became a prostitute inorder to sustain the needs of her sisters acquired disease.
A light was shed on them when Berto got converted into a Christian Pastor. He
spiritually fed the hearts and minds of his friends through the word of God. Then,
engagements of advices were given to one another that each other’s life.
In the part of love story, Intoy longed for Doray since they were a child. Intoy
helped Doray to be afar from her indecent job by working hard in the mussel
farm. He waited for the harvest time of his mussels so that he could take Doray
away from the agony in Kalye Marino, but a natural tragedy happened and
fate forbidden him to gather his expected money from selling his mussels. At the
end, Doray confessed his lifelong disease to Intoy. Intoy did not judge nor
refused her. Instead, concern, support and love for Doray given by him.

There were a group of friends in the Kalye Marino that was celebrating.
Their different lives were showed as well. The circle of friends were always
together, almost every night that they drink and talk about their problems
in life, such as the future that they will go into, how their family left them,
how they survive in each day, and of course, they also talk about Intoy’s
toomuch care to their friend, Doray.

In Eros Atalia's "Intoy Syokoy of the Marines Street," the story is clear and
the transitions of events are well illustrated. The writer uses some words that are
specific to people who belong to a lower class society. He described the
common scenes on Marines Street, as a place inhabited by ordinary people
with different perceptions of life, behavior, dreams and a variety of styles and
techniques to surpass the gastrointestinal tract.
The idea that emerged in this story is based on the experience of writer
Eros Atalia because he himself came from Marines Street. It is said that this story
has become so bold as to use words that are not appropriate and acceptable
for other people especially in public. Nonetheless, these words such as direct
swearing and sensitive terms are one way to convey and convey to readers the
world in which the story is taking place.

The writer also describes the physical aspects of each scene in the story. A
detailed description of his staff also helped for the confidentiality of the readers.

Intoy is like a living concrete pillar. Hair color is rusty.

Because of too much problem and pain, Intoy drowns himself in the water.
It is sad to think that so many young people are being treated by the
main characters in the story. Children who grew up without parental guidance,
early seeding and self-selling to find themselves there, children who were
deprived of their right to education and who had lost their way to life.

Intoy is hardworking, and the person you can tell with dreams, he is good
in his field. At a young age he stood on his own feet, but without the education
of the school I could say he wanted to be good in at least one field, he did not
want to be belittled and ridiculed as his childhood friends did. so he wanted to
fill in the reason why it was done to him so that it would never happen again.

From what I have read, I know that he loved Doray, Doray as he had in his
childhood lost his parents, but Doray was a young mother and father to her own
siblings, sacrificing herself for food.

Berto, on the other hand, seems to have been denied education, but he
seems to have lost his respect for women, after the use of the body is over.

In such cases there would be parents who should guide their children, for
neglecting almost all the rights of a child have been denied them. Parents who
would rather treat their own wounds than take care of them and let the child
cry over their cries for emotional pain.
