Theoretical Background of the Study

This part of the research presents the theories that strengthen the analysis of the

study. Further, it is supported by the theories of Social Learning Theory and Media

Theory.

Social Learning Theory (SLT) was developed by Albert (1925). It agrees with the

behaviorist learning theories of classical conditioning and operant conditioning.

3

According to Albert Bandura (1925). Social Learning Theory has sometimes

been called a bridge between behaviourist and cognitive learning theories because it

encompasses attention , memory and motivation. The theory is related to Vygotsky’s

social development Theory and Lave’s situated learning which also emphasize the

importance of social learning theory.

The statement best rrelates the theory because as stated in there, it

encompasses attention, memory and motivation . It posits that people learn from one

another, via observation , imitation and modelling.

Media theory refers to the complex of social-political-philosophical principles

which organize ideas about the relationship between media and society. Within this is a

type of theory called normative theory which is concerned with what the media ought to

be doing in society rather that what they actually do. In general, the dominant ideas

about the obligations of mass media will be consistent with other values and

arrangements in a given society.

According to Siebert et al (1956) in their book four theories of the press. “the

press takes on the form and coloration of the social and political structures within which

it operates.

A comparative analysis of Korean Drama and Filipino telenovelas watchers best

relates to media theory because media theory involves people in the society and media.

Drama can be seen through media and the society involves in the study.
