PLUMBING CALCULATIONS

Domestic Water Demand:

Max Occupation= 2728 Person

W/C = 75 l / Person / day
Q avg. = 2728 X 0.075
= 205 m³/day
Water Demand Required:

Assume working hours are 12 hrs

Q = 205 x 1000 / 12 × 3600

= 4.7 l/s
Assuming Peak factor = 2.25
Then Q = 10.7 l / s
Take Q = 11 l/s
H manometric = H static + H friction + H losses + H Residual
H st . = 20 m
H friction + H losses = 40 % Hst. = 8 m
Recommended H Residual = 1 bar
To overcome pressure losses in filtration system for central heaters or drinking water system
H manometric = 38 m
Take H manometric = 40 m
If the required head is not available in the header running through the spine, the following
pumps shall be provided:
Three pumps, two are working + one is standby each having the following capacity:

 Q = 5.5 l/s
 H = 40 m

HP = Q xH xSP.GR / 3960η
HP = Horse Power
SP.GR = Specific Gravity of Liquid with respect to Water
SP.GR.(Water) = 1.0

Type of Building: Educational

Demand factor = 0.25

Storage capacity factor = 1

No. of fixtures:

No. of public lavatories = 119

No. of private lavatories = 26
No. of kitchen sinks = 21
No. of Service sinks = 18
No. of Ablution area = 42
No. of Lab. Basin = 31
No. of Wash sinks =8

Hot water Demand required for each fixture:

Public lavatory = 57 l/hr

Private lavatory = 7.6 l/hr
Kitchen sink = 76 l/hr
Service sink = 76 l/hr
Ablution area = 57 l/hr
Lab. Basin = 57 l/hr
Wash sinks = 76 l/hr

Probable maximum Demand =

No. of fixtures x demand required for each fixture x demand factor
=(119 x57+ 26x 7.6+ 21x 76+ 18x 76+ 42x 57+ 31x 57+ 8x76)x 0.25
= 3679 l/hr
= 972 GPH

Storage tank capacity = Maximum demand x Storage capacity factor

= 3679 x 1
= 3679 l
= 183 gal.

Total hot water Pipes length (supply and return) = 1700 m

Heat losses through pipes = Total pipe length x 40 W/m (Insulated pipes)
(q) = 68000 Watt

Q circulation pump = q/ ρ c p Δt

Updated September 25, 2011

Page 3 of 9 Project No. K1004
ρ = density of water =0.99 kg/l (50˚C)
c p = specific heat of water = 4186.8 J/(kg.K)
Δt = allowable temperature drop, K

Assuming 10 K allowable temperature drop,

Q circulation pump = 6800/ (0.99 x 4186.8 x 10)

= 1.64 l/s
Take Q circulation pump = 1.8 l/s

To get pump head the only loss we have is the line friction loss in all pipes and fitting

Pump head = 1.3 x (friction loss)

= 1.3 x (4/100 x Total pipe length)
= 88.5 m
Take Pump head = 90 m

Water Heater Capacity required = 3700 l/hr

Storage Hot Water tank required = 3700 l
Hot water Circulation pump required:
Two pumps one working + one standby each have the following capacity
Q = 1.8 L/S
H = 90 M
P = 10 Hp
