Learning Outcomes:

1. Apply the approaches and techniques of developing listening and speaking skills
in the primary ESL classroom. (C3, P5, A3 PLO3, CTPS1)
2. Design materials (including remedial and enrichment) for the teaching of listening
and speaking in the primary ESL classroom. (C6, P7, PLO2, PLO3, CTPS3)
3. Plan a lesson including activities and methods of assessment based on the current
Malaysian English Language syllabus for primary schools.(C6, PLO3, PLO6,
CTPS3, LL1)
4. Present a teaching of listening and speaking lesson in groups. (C6, A2, PLO4,
PLO5, PLO8,CS3, TS1, EM3)
5. Write a reflection on lessons to develop listening and speaking skills in the primary
ESL classroom. (C6, A2, PLO3, PLO6,CTPS5,LL2)

This coursework is to assess the course learning outcomes in 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5.

Coursework Objectives:

To enable the students to:

1. write a one-hour lesson plan for listening and speaking skills based on SBE.
2. design teaching-learning materials to teach listening and speaking skills by integrating
ICT elements in the materials.
3. present one stage of the full listening and speaking lesson in groups.

4. write a reflective essay of 500 words based on the simulated teaching.

This coursework project allows the trainees to demonstrate an understanding of developing


listening and speaking skills in the Malaysian Primary ESL Classroom by providing an
opportunity to conduct a lesson using appropriate materials and activities. The coursework is
also to ensure that the Malaysian education system continues to be relevant in a constantly
changing world and to integrate a spirit of innovation and creativity.

Task 1: Lesson Plan (20%) – Individual

“Lesson planning is the process of taking everything we know about teaching


and learning along with everything we know about the students in front of us
and putting it together to create a road map for what a class period will look
like.”
(Purgason, 2014)

1. Observe a complete listening and speaking skills lesson of any Year (Year 1 – Year 5)
based on the following elements:
a) clear learning goals
b) appropriate assessment tasks
c) effective implementation
d) pacing
e) clear directions of instructions
f) preparation
g) materials
h) room set up, etc

2. Append evidence in the following to support your discussion:


a) A lesson plan for the class you observed
- learning goals
- assessment tasks
- implementation
- directions of instructions
- teaching and learning materials
b) Your original observation notes
c) Pupils’ work sample(s)

3. Based on your SBE, create a one-hour lesson plan for listening and speaking skills that
includes the teaching-learning materials by integrating ICT elements.

Task 2: Teaching and Learning Materials (15%). NPDL (EDUP3053) - Individual

NPDL TASK:
As a dynamic educator of the 21st century, you are required to produce learning materials in
the form of an Android smartphone application as an effective media for teaching and
learning. The material is developed using appropriate software and multimedia elements
( EDUP3053)

Based on your lesson plan during SBE, design the teaching-learning materials to teach
listening and speaking skills by integrating ICT elements.

Task 3: Simulated teaching (10%) – Group work

a) You are required to work in groups of three.


b) Choose one of the lessons from your group and micro teach one stage of the full
lesson prepared.
c) Collaborative teamwork should be manifested.
d) Marks will be awarded for your pronunciation, fluency, body movements, creativity
and worksheets prepared.

Task 4: Reflective Essay- Simulated teaching (15%) – Individual.

Based on your simulated teaching, write an individual reflection in about 500 words. Your
reflection should include the following:
a) lesson planning
b) lesson implementation
c) professional qualities

Requirement for the coursework


1. The coursework requires you to work individually and as a group.
2. You are advised to discuss your work regulalry with your lecturer to ensure the targets
are met.
3. References should include journals, reference books and internet sources.
4. Referencing procedures must follow the APA (American Psychological Association)
style.
5. Essay should show your originality, maturity and academic quality.
6. Plagiarism in any form is strongly prohibited. All borrowed ideas must be
acknowledged and properly cited. Disciplinary action will be taken against students who
violate the rules of plagiarism in accordance with Act 174 Institutions of Education
Disciplinary Amendment 2012 - part V (Disciplinary Procedures) (3.8.5).
7. Your work should be type written with 1.5 spacing and font Arial size 11.
8. This coursework carries 60% weightage for the course.
