THE DISCIPLINE OF SOCIAL WORK

WELFARE -the health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group.

-It is a government program which provides financial aid to individuals or groups who cannot
support themselves. Welfare programs are funded by taxpayers and allow people to cope with financial
stress during rough periods of their lives.

Social Workers

1) Aim to protect vulnerable people from abuse, neglect, or self-harm

2) Operate w/in legal frameworks for protecting and supporting vulnerable people

3) Practice in statutory contexts: National Health Service

 Generally wanting to be empowered, to be socially included by way of ensuring that one

receives what is legally due and necessary care they deserve.

 Some may include need for their rights to be respected, some need justice, and others need
social welfare help to put them on their feet.

 The Philippines' Department of Social Welfare and Development (Kagawaran ng Kagalingan at
Pagpapaunlad Panlipunan) is the executive department of the Philippine Government responsible
for the protection of the social welfare of rights of Filipinos and to promote social development.

CONDUCTING NEEDS ASSESSMENT

This is done thru Interviews, observations, and surveys in a setting. Results of analysis of
collected information become the basis for planning, identifying the kinds of social work
needed, the process, methods, and tools needed to deliver efficient and effective services.

Example: Heavy Drug Addiction and substance abuse

◦ Social work practice may decide to focus on rehabilitation, care, and prevention that are
supported by social policy of any form.

MONITORING AND EVALUATING SOCIAL WORK EFFECTIVITY

 Intervention is planned, implemented, and by a process documentation to be able to explain

what is happening on both sides, the social work, and on recipients of services –Monitoring.

 Afterwards, a more comprehensive examination of the impacts and influence of the services on
the recipients is done to determine efficacy and effectiveness of the program and services.
