Subject: Commemoration of World Indigenous Day 2019

Dear Donbok,

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is marked on the 9th of August every year in order to preserve
the legal entitlement of the indigenous population in the world. This occasion also identifies the contributions and
achievements which these people have made towards resolving various world-based issues, including protection of
the environment. This day was initially announced by the United Nations General Assembly in the month of
December in 1994, which also marks the day of the foremost meeting of the working group of the United Nations on
the promotion and protection of rights of the Indigenous people in 1982.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is celebrated to honor and recognize the resilience, pride,
strength and dignity of the indigenous people worldwide. The day is designated to concentrate on safeguarding the
rights of the world’s indigenous population as well as appreciating their contributions made towards the global
societies and the rich cultures.

Grassroot in collaboration with the International Indigenous Women Forum, Peru are coming together this 2019 to
commemorate its first World Indigenous Day in Shillong, Meghalaya with the theme – ‘Ka Lawei Ka Ktien Baїar U
Hynñiewtrep U Hynñiewskum’. A two-day programme will be held on the 8th and 9th of August 2019, at the
Pastoral Centre, Shillong to further empower and strengthen our roots, identity and heritage through our languages
and dialects. As part of this event, a panel discussion will be held on the 8th of August, 2019 at 2 pm. It is our sincere
effort to kindly request you to be a part of the commemoration and document the processes and document the
processes as a rapporteur of the discussion over the course of both days for further and stronger action plans.

We look forward to a fruitful and productive discussion during the two days, and your presence is most essential and
solicited.
