Text 1 Narrative Text

The Necessity of Salt

Once upon a time there was a king who had three daughters. Because they were good
and beautiful he loved them all sincerely. He did not know which one he should appoint as
queen.
As his birthday approached he summoned his daughters and said to them, "My dear
children, I love all three of you sincerely, and for a long time have not known which one of
you I should name to be the heir to my throne. But I have now decided that the one of you
shall become queen who brings to me a birthday present that is most necessary in human
life. Go and make your plans accordingly and with utmost diligence."
The old king's birthday arrived, and the two oldest daughters brought him presents
that were very necessary, but at the same time extremely expensive. However, the youngest daughter
brought him nothing more than a little pile of salt in a decorated container. When the king saw her
present, he became very angry, and he drove his daughter out of the castle, forbidding her ever again to
let herself be seen by him.
With deep sorrow the rejected daughter went out into the unknown world, comforted
only by her faith in her own good sense. After walking a good while she came to an inn.
There she found a female innkeeper who thoroughly understood cooking. She entered an
apprenticeship with her and soon exceeded even the innkeeper in the art of cooking.
News spread far and wide of the excellent cook in this inn, and everyone who came
this way and who still had a few kreuzers left in his pocket stopped to be served a roast or
something even more elegant.
The king heard of the cook's reputation, and he hired her as court cook. Now it came
to pass that the oldest princess was getting married, and the famous cook was assigned the
preparation of the wedding feast, with no expenses to be spared.
Thus on the wedding day one elegant dish after the other was served until the table
almost cracked. Everything was excellently prepared, and everyone praised the cook. Finally the king's
favorite dish arrived. Quickly taking a spoon he tasted it. "This has not been salted!" he cried out angrily.
"Have the cook brought before me!"
They quickly ran for the cook, who entered the hall undaunted.
"Why did you forget to salt my favorite dish, you careless girl?" snapped the king at her.
The cook answered, "You drove away your youngest daughter because she thought
that salt was so necessary. Perhaps you can now see that your child was not so wrong."
When the king heard these words he recognized his daughter, begged her for
forgiveness, asked her to be seated at his side, and accepted her once again as his dear
child. Then the wedding became doubly joyful.
The king lived happily with his children for many years thereafter.

Text 2 Hortatory Text


Students’ cheating is one of the biggest problems faced by teachers nowadays.
Despite the fact that teachers advise their students not to do dishonest acts during tests, some students
still do cheating. There are many kinds of cheating that students do during the test or examination, such
as looking other students’ work, put some notes under their clothes, write notes or formulas on their
desks make hand signals or go to rest rooms to get the answers from their friends.

In my view, students who do cheating are committing a crime. It is a sort of taking something illegally.
This crime causes negative results to the students. Students who always cheat deteriorate their mental
capacity. Cheating acts also create dependence. They weaken their self confidence. Instead of preparing
for the coming test, they are busy to organize notes on a piece of paper. If this awful habit continues,
the students will lose their opportunity to develop their intellectual and mind.

Therefore, school should consider cheating as a very serious problem. School board and administration
should go hand to overcome this matter. Honesty must be put in school’s vision. Harsh punishment
must be applied to students who commit this crime.

“Men sana in corpore sano”, a healthy body makes a sound mind. More and more people nowadays are
aware of the truth behind the maxim. As a result, they make sports an integral part of their lives. Some
people participate in sports to release energy and tension, while others do it to make friends. Sports,
such as soccer, basketball or boxing, have become an acceptable way to release energy and aggression.
Other sport like golf, mountain climbing, dancing or bowling can be means of starting or consolidating
friendships. Most sports offer a constructive escape from the pressures of the everyday life. In fact, you
can change your life if you take up and keep up an activity suited to your character, abilities and lifestyle.

It is important to realize that no matter what kind of exercise you do, you can be sure that it’s always
good for your health and that it’s fun.

Text 4 Biography Text

Steven Paul Jobs was born on 24 February 1955 in San Francisco, California, to Abdulfattah Jandali and
Joanne who gave him up for adoption. He was taken in by Paul and Clara Jobs, and grew up with them in
Mountain View, California.
He attended Homestead High School in Cupertino California and went to Reed College in Portland
Oregon in 1972 but dropped out after only one semester, staying on to "drop in" on courses that
interested him.

He took a job with video game manufacturer Atari to raise enough money for a trip to India and
returned from there a Buddhist.

Back in Cupertino he returned to Atari where his old friend Steve Wozniak was still working. Wozniak
was building his own computer and in 1976 Jobs pre-sold 50 of the as-yet unmade computers to a local
store and managed to buy the components on credit solely on the strength of the order, enabling them
to build the Apple I without any funding at all.

The Apple II followed in 1977 and the company Apple Computer was formed shortly afterwards. By the
time production of the Apple II ended in 1993 it had sold over 6 million units.

In 1985 Jobs was fired from Apple and immediately founded another computer company, NeXT.

In the meantime, in 1986, Jobs bought The Computer Graphics Group from Lucasfilm. The group was
responsible for making high-end computer graphics hardware but under its new name, Pixar, it began to
produce innovative computer animations. Their first title under the Pixar name, Luxo Jr. (1986) won
critical and popular acclaim and in 1991 Pixar signed an agreement with Disney, with whom it already
had a relationship, to produce a series of feature films, beginning with Toy Story (1995).

In 1996 Apple bought NeXT and Jobs returned to Apple, becoming its CEO. In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed
with pancreatic cancer and underwent surgery in 2004. Despite the success of this operation he became
increasingly ill and received a liver transplant in 2009. He returned to work after a six month break but
eventually resigned his position in August 2011 after another period of medical leave which began in
January 2011. He died on 5 October 2011.

Germinating Petunia Seeds

Follow these instructions to germinate petunia seeds.

You will need:


• a packet of petunia seeds
• a seed tray or small pots
• loamy friable soil or potting mix
• water
• fertilizer.

Steps:

1. Fill seed tray with soil.

2. Incorporate fertilizer into soil.

3. Scatter seeds on the surface of the soil.

4. Cover seeds with a 3 mm layer of soil. Press firmly.

5. Spray water to moisten the seed bed.

6. Place seed tray in warm, sunny position (at least 25 deg. C).

7. Keep soil moist by watering gently while seeds are germinating. Seeds will
germinate in approximately 10 - 14 days.

Whales are the largest animal on earth. Bigger than elephants, they may grow 95 feet long, and weight
150 tons. A baby blue whale, just born, can be 23 feet long and weight 3 tons.

Although whales live in the oceans and can swim like fish, they are not fish. They are mammals, like
cows and elephants. Unlike fish, they bear young alive net as eggs. Their babies live on their mother’s
milk. They breathe through their lungs and hold their breathe when they go under water. If they cannot
come to the surface to breathe fresh air, they will drown. They are warm blooded. Fish, however, lay
eggs, breathe oxygen in the water and are cold blooded.

Whales live in all the oceans. In the winter some of them go to warm waters to breed and in the summer
most of them go to cold waters to feed. There are two kinds of whales, whales with teeth (toothed
whales) and whales without teeth (baleen whales). The toothed whales eat fish and squid, which they
can catch with their teeth, although they swallow their food without chewing it. The baleen whales eat
plankton (small sea animals and plants). When they find plankton, they open their mouths and swim
into the plankton. When they close their mouths, they squeeze out the water and swallow the plankton.

Whales have few enemies. Only human beings and the killer whales attack whales. And whales do not
seem to fight among themselves. They usually live from 20 to 30 years.

For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were the chimpanzees. Now,
however, there is a proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.

Although a dolphin lives in the sea, it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a
human being.

Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to
learn how to talk to dolphins. But, this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds
man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which
both he and the dolphins can understand.

Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. They often follow ships. There are many stories about
dolphins guiding ships through difficult and dangerous waters.
