JIM BRISIMITZIS
Managing Partner,
5G Open Innovation Lab
Jim Brisimitzis has over 15+ years of enterprise,
channel, and startup community experience
through Bell Canada, Nortel Networks,
PeopleSoft, Oracle and over 13 years with
Microsoft. Jim has held the position of General
Manager of the Microsoft for Startups program in
the United States, which he launched with his team
in 2015. In over 3 years, Jim and his team worked
with 2,800 startups, generating $50 million of net
new revenue, and a combined portfolio valuation
of $12B.
Jim has led many internal innovation efforts
ranging from SMB mini-servers to complex, highly
scalable, private cloud computing solutions. As an
“intrapreneur,” Jim appeals to opportunities that
help large organizations rapidly innovate new and
emerging opportunities from concept to customer
adoption. His early innovation work with artificial
intelligence and machine learning led to the
development of a predictive algorithm to identify
high potential early stage startups. This
technology was recently awarded a US patent.
He holds a degree in Business Management from
Trent University in Canada. Jim and his family
reside in Seattle, WA.

RICK BALAKIER
Director, Corporate Strategy &
Strategic Partnerships, T-Mobile
Rick Balakier leads T-Mobile’s efforts to embrace
open innovation, the developer and entrepreneur
communities, and the technology ecosystem in
Seattle. He is leading the relationship with the 5G
Open Innovation Lab, including working across
network, business and marketing teams to bring in
the expertise required by the Lab and its portfolio
companies.
Prior to his role at T-Mobile, Rick has had a long
career across the startup and corporate
ecosystems. Rick has been a successful
entrepreneur and founder of a medical device
startup. His startups include RK Ventures, RedCap,
Fabulous Flying Machines and MovieShares.
As a consultant, Rick is adept at recruiting top
performing executive teams; identifying new
revenue sources and leading product strategy.
While at IBM Business Consulting, Rick led the
transformation of Watson Labs from a cost center
to a revenue-generating client services
organization.
He received his MBA from the Tuck School of
Business at Dartmouth College.
SUMIT ROY
Professor of Integrated Systems,
ECE University of Washington.
Professor Roy has been a faculty member in
Electrical & Computer Engineering at the
University of Washington since 1998, where he
presently holds the Integrated Systems
Professorship. Prof Roy’s research expertise
encompasses wireless communications and
networking, emerging network architectures (e.g.
5G) and technologies (software defined radios and
networks) and applications to smart cities,
infrastructure and mobility. He directs the
internationally recognized Fundamentals of
Networking Laboratory
His research has been continuously supported via
federal (NSF, DoE and various DoD agencies) and
industry (Intel, Nokia, Cisco and Boeing) grants,
contracts and gifts. In 2001-03 Prof Roy spent an
academic leave as a Senior Researcher & Wireless
Systems Architect at Intel’s Wireless Technology
Lab, where he contributed to systems
standardization activities for ultra-wideband and
next-generation wireless LAN technologies. His
work has resulted in 9 awarded US patents.
He is presently an Executive board member of the
National Spectrum Consortium a research and
development organization focused on developing
spectrum sharing solutions for federal customers,
including federal 5G use cases.
JESSE CANEDO
Chief Economic Development Officer,
City of Bellevue
Jesse Canedo is a technology advocate, global
citizen, and economic development strategist.
Over the last seven years in public service, Jesse
has built startup support programs, worked with
the Brookings Institution’s Global Cities Initiative,
directed international market research programs,
and managed foreign trade zones. He has a
proven ability to build trust with a broad customer
base, manage complex projects, and test new
ideas that lead to business growth.
In his role at the City of Bellevue he currently leads
the city’s growth in economic development, arts,
and public private partnerships. Prior he managed
a diverse portfolio of activities that support
business expansion, outreach, and external
partnership development. Highlights include:
● 3,700 new jobs in Bellevue by recruiting
WeWork, BitTitan, and others.
● Built Startup 425 from policy idea to a fully
operational business line servicing customers
across five jurisdictions.
● Managed development of new marketing
brands for City of Bellevue, Startup 425, and
Innovation Triangle
● Reached audiences that are 60% people of
color and 65% female.

The IPZ unifies developers, startups, investors, telecommunication companies,
global tech corporations, (domestic and international), researchers and public-sector
agencies focused on accelerating 5G use cases.

Who What Why

Seattle stands uniquely alone as the global tech hub
for 5G because of native tech players in wireless, cloud
computing, and silicon.
The opportunity is in organizing the community to
attract the best developers, startups, academics and
students, industry thought leaders, and Independent
Software Vendors (ISVs) to build their innovations
here.
The 5G Open Innovation Lab will accelerate early and late
stage enterprise startups launching new innovative
products, services, and technologies.
Through the accelerator program commencing in
October 2019, and operating 2 cohorts per year every
year thereafter, the IPZ and its partners will actively
develop, test and validate new business ideas, and bring
in further investment into the region.
Qualcomm have projected 5G as a $3.7 trillion
opportunity. Because 5G of the nature of 5G - utilizing
large amounts of data and devices - there are significant
B2B opportunities as 5G continues to be deployed
around the US and across the globe.
Priority verticals include: mobile edge computing,
intelligent networking, enterprise security, smart cities,
massive Internet of Things and autonomous connectivity.
