Fixed the chimney and put a cap on the top. It turns out the falling bricks and
mortar was from a divider at the top of the chimney between an old unused vent
from the kitchen and the fireplace chimney. This is not supporting anything and
is not structural. (Brandon Pinkham)

Coat top of any posts with a Thompson's water sealer.
