Final Assessment Test (FAT) – May 2017

Course: CHY1001 - Engineering Chemistry

Class NBR(s):4569 Slot: F2+TF2
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 100

Answer any TEN Questions

(10 X 10 = 100 Marks)
1. a) Explain the significance of BOD and COD in water. [5]
b) A standard hard water contains 20 g of CaCO3 per litre of water. 15 mL of this consumed 25 mL of [5]
EDTA during titration. 50 mL of sample water required 15 mL of EDTA and the same sample, after
boiling, required 10 mL of EDTA. Calculate the temporary hardness of the water sample.
2. a) Write a detailed note on the methods employed for the softening of water sample within the [5]
boiler.
b) List out the various reasons for the formations of scales inside the boiler and also mention the [5]
disadvantages caused by these scales.
3. a) Calculate the amount of lime(92 % pure) required for softening 50,000 liters of hard water [5]
containing the following: HCl =21.9 mg/L; Al2 (SO4)3 = 22.8 mg/L; Ca(HCO3)2 = 8.1 mg/L;
Mg(HCO3)2 = 7.3 mg/L; MgCl2 = 19 mg/L; NaCl = 29.25 mg/L.
b) With the help of chemical reactions, explain how zeolites are helpful in softening of water. [5]
(diagram not required).
4. Explain the various methods adopted for disinfection during the purification of water by the [10]
municipalities. List out the merits and demerits of these adopted methods.
5. a) When iron is placed in acidic solution, it dissolves rapidly, whereas it forms rust when placed in [5]
neutral solution (in the presence of dissolved oxygen). Explain the reason behind these different
types of corrosion of iron in different environment.
b) Explain how the nature of film formed influences the extent of corrosion of metals in dry oxygen [5]
atmosphere.
6. Discuss the methods through which corrosion on a metal can be prevented by making them to [10]
behave as cathode.
7. Write a detailed note on the construction, electrochemical reactions, merits and demerits of [10]
alkaline primary battery. What are the advantage of this over Lechlanche battery?
8. Describe the construction and working of a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell. List out the potential [10]
applications of H2-O2 fuel cells.
9. a) Describe the construction and working of a calorimeter which is used for the determination of [5]
calorific value of a solid fuel.
b) A gaseous fuel was tested using Boy’s calorimeter experiment and the following data were [5]
obtained:
Volume of the gas used = 0.5 m3 at STP
Wt. of water heated = 50 kg
Temperature of inlet water = 25 oC
Temperature of outlet water = 37 oC
Wt. of steam condensed = 0.075 kg
Calculate the gross and net calorific value per m3 at STP.

10. a) Define octane number. Discuss the methods adopted for improving the antiknocking [5]
characteristics of a fuel.
b) 1 Kg of a fuel was found to have the following composition: C= 72%, H = 8.5%, O = 6%, S= 3.5 % [5]
N2 = 6% and ash = 4%. Calculate the minimum volume of air required for the complete
combustion of this fuel.

11. a) Describe the fabrication of plastic articles using transfer moulding technique with the help of a [5]
suitable diagram.
b) What is ABS plastic? Describe its properties and engineering applications. [5]

12. a) Illustrate the mechanism of electrical conduction in polymers using polyaniline as an example. [5]
b) What are the various modes through which the polymers undergo degradation? List out the [5]
criteria required for a polymer to undergo biodegradation.
