Old Number 734 retired, replaced with a Freightliner

The #734 Valley County Long
Run rescue truck was on its last leg,
finally just too many mechanical
issues to keep the old girl on the trail.
With cooperation from the Valley
County Commissioners and a grant
from Keystone XL Pipeline, it was
time to replace ol’ #734.
Now it was time to find the
replacement, and they found a used
truck in great condition. One minor
little problem is that it was all the way
over in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Someone had to go get it. Randy
“White Indian” Isakson said he was
up for the task. This was back in
May.
He flew to Pittsburgh and
hitched a ride on a horse and buggy
with an Amish family to Greensburg
which is about 30 miles southeast of
the Steel City.

“Ooh, that was one long haul, boss,” the White
Indian explained of a 57 miles per hour top speed
and often running slower than that because it was an
extremely rough ride due to the truck being empty.
“Going through somewhere, Illinois or one of
them states they’ve got rougher highways than us,” he
said, “damn-near needed a mouth piece, trainer bra and
a kidney belt — uffda! Like I said, it was one long, long,
long ride.”
He was actually planning on trying to make the
run in 36 hours with a couple of catnaps, but, that would
prove to be impossible, what with a 1,675 mile drive at
top speed of under 60 mph. He spent two short nights in
hotel rooms — about four, maybe four and a half hours

each night— so it was about a three-and-a-half day round
trip. He also noted that if the radio didn’t work he would
have bought his own plane ticket back home!
Next step was to spruce up the new #734 with
some Valley County pride, which DB Design (Dustin
& Brianne Brunelle) handled, and a beautiful job at that
we might add.
All the equipment was transferred to old #734 to
new #734 and it was now ready to roll. On May 21st
they put it to use in a practice run.
734 is a call number. This truck doesn’t haul any
water, rather all the important equipment needed.
A four-wheel-drive, “It’s an all-around workhorse,”
Jeron Wesen, “straight rescue purpose, straight storage.”

The City Fire Department and Long Run have
been striving to work together as much as possible for
the community, in fact most of the volunteer firefighters
serve on both crews.
“We’re all the same people, two departments working
BS Buzz together,” Jeron says. “Both have separate checkbooks,
but we all need to work together, work as one.”
Slowly but surely they have been upgrading their
gear.
“Brandon (Brunelle) has been doing one hell of a
fine job,” Jeron praised the City Fire Chief.
