INTRODUCTION

Poverty is deem to be the uppermost cause of overpopulation. Overpopulation leads to

famine, pollution unemployment and poverty, it has reciprocal effect between Poverty and Rapidly

Growing Population. It is a real problem not only for underdeveloped countries, but also

threatening the entire human population, the population growth sets chain of events that can be

catastrophic for human life on earth.

Global human population growth amounts to 83 million annually, or 1.1% per year. The

global population has grown from 1 billion in 1800 to 7.616 billion in 2018. It is expected to keep

growing, and estimates have put total population at 8.6 billion by mid-2030., 9.8billion by mid-

2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100 (Population Growth Statistic, 2019).

The population is the way to determine the status of life of one nation. Many nations with

rapid population growth have low standards of living, whereas many nations with low rates of

population growth have high standards of living.

Generalization, Philippines is a country located in Southeast Asia comprised of more than

7,000 island and its population is approximately 107,739,848 people within. Poverty has proven

to be one of the most significant challenges facing this country and its citizens. Filipinos are having

a hard time surviving in such difficult conditions, and more are falling into extreme poverty

(Robinson, 2018).

However it is incontestable that this country is truly suffering from poverty virtually sighted

on its physical and economic condition in urban and rural areas specifically on squatter’s areas.

The major causes of poverty includes: low economic growth, a weak agricultural sectors, high

volume of inequalities and the main caused is increased population rates that wants this study

sought to address and give possible partial plan to lessen the abovementioned main cause of

poverty. Because of these factors, there are a lot of effects of poverty in the Philippines that make

it difficult for people to live in such circumstances.

A FIELD INQUIRY
Using the Design Thinking Process Method

Overpopulation is an undesirable condition where the number of existing human

population exceeds the carrying capacity of the earth. In biology or Human Geography, population

growth is the increase in the number of individuals in a population (Population Growth Statistic,

2019).

The fear is that high population numbers are putting further strain on natural resources,

food supplies, employment, housing etc. The natural resources are limited and are not able to

meet the demands of the current population growth. The arable land is limited and there is lack

of food that causes poor health and death from malnutrition. The supply of fresh water is also

limited and the technologies for creating fresh water are expensive. The increasing population

increases the demand for resources in that way increasing the cost of living.

Currently, the natural resources are at their limit and the population increases much faster

than resources such as food, jobs, housing and medical care. A future of poverty, hunger and

diseases are about to come if the population growth will not in controlled.

Philippines has one of the fastest growing population in Souhteast Asia. Living place is

becoming increasingly saturated. This overcrowding is causing a range of problems such as lack

of education, lack of healthcare, unemployment and general poverty (Mads, 2006).

Sitio, Transmitter, Sta. Lucia Capas, Tarlac has a contribution on rapidly growing

population of the Philippines. The design thinker studied the community about the

abovementioned issue and sought to address the issue using the Design Thinking Process

Method. This paper aims to identify the physical and human geographical problems that is visible

in the abovementioned community which related issues, the designer will also generate ideas to

give the possible solutions to the aforesaid challenges.

According to Hasso-Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. Design Thinking is a design

methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It’s extremely useful

in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs

involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in

brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing.

Understanding these five stages of Design Thinking will empower anyone to apply the Design

Thinking methods in order to solve complex problems that occur around us — in our companies,

in our countries, and even on the scale of our planet.

This method has five effective stages including Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and

Validation. Which will elaborate the information of this essay through these stages in identifying

the problems and in giving solutions.

Stage 1.
EMPATHIZE

Unawareness in building and organizing a family result in penniless areas seeing large

booms in population. A lack of educational attainment and resources, coupled with high death

rates leading to higher birth rates. Overpopulation is most influential cause of poverty. On the

other hand, it has become a customary for Filipinos Tradition of having big families that

supereminent to overlap the population that leads to starvation.

“It is common condition of being poor… you are always afraid that the good things in your

life are temporary, that someone can take them away, because you have no power beyond your

own brute strength to stop them,” (RICK BRAGG)

Furthermore, poverty was innate in our life, it is like an epidemic disease with no antidote

affecting the entire world. Poverty is already existed before we born, it seems that it has no

beginning and even ending. It became part of other lives and runs through their veins. This issues

was not incurable, it’s getting worse and worse because of human actions. But it prevents partially

with the help of Government, Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s) and most especially the

participation and collaboration of the Citizens.

The traditional ways, lack of education in contraceptives use, having no family planning

and desire for more children also adds to the population. As a result of this over population that

experiencing social issues such as increases rates of poverty, crimes, diseases and

environmental problems such as increased global warming, pollution, loss of habitat and more.

These threats are very necessary to be addressed, as they will affect people worldwide. It is

important to look at these factors since every human has the ability to prevent future damages

and adjust lifestyle to decelerate this increase in population.

To make it realistic, the emphatic relation was conducted to understand and see the

reason why many families in Sitio, Transmitter, Sta. Lucia Capas Tarlac was overlapping

demographically.

A FIELD INQUIRY
Using the Design Thinking Process Method

This essay provides information that contain different perspective of selected respondent

of abovementioned topic. It aims to know the factors of the growth of population in the said

community and if the rising of population is a boon or a bane.

The Community and its Challenges

Sitio, Transmitter is located in-between of Brgy. Cristorey (Navy) and Brgy. Sta. Lucia

Capas Tarlac. According to the statistics of Brgy. Sta, Lucia its population is approximately 7,174

with 1,020 household that determined by 2015 Census. The age group with highest population is

3 to 9 with 4,199 individuals. Conversely, the age groups with the lowest population are in the

range 75 to 79, and 80 and over, with 65 individuals.

The data analysis show the fact that most of the population of Sitio, Transmitter are the

age of Toddler (3 to 6) to Preschool (6 to 9) stage is prominent than adult, it’s clearly indicates

most of the families has no right way of family planning that’s why it’s possible to consider most

of the family in Sitio, Transmitter is suffering from poverty because of overpopulation according

to the data analysis presented. Based on observation and survey of design thinker most of

residents of Sitio are farmers (kasama) that means they have low income and feed the large

number of their family insufficiently.

Even by the means of resources, overpopulation will experience a degradation to their

quality and length of life as they face increasing difficulties to supply water, food, energy and

housing to their growing population, which will have major repercussions for public health, security

measure and economic growth (EverthingConnects, 2014).

The following are the respondents that stated their reason why they having large number

member on their family. According to Mrs. Corazon Dimalanta stated her reason why she has 6

(Now, I have 6 sons and their

intervals is almost 1 year. The reason why I have 6 children now because I wanted to have a

daughter, yearly I’m trying but it’s still a boy until my children’s reach out 6 because I really wanted

to have a daughter).

bahay.” (But I think I will stop it because were so many here in our house and only my husband

have work. My work is just taking care our children and he will not supply our needs if we have

another one. Actually I’m hard to manage our budget every day because were 8 in our house).

Meanwhile, Mrs. Fe Dimalanta sister in law of Mrs. Corazon Dimalanta. She has 6 child

also, 4 Girls and 2 Boys. “Kaya umabot ng amin ang mga anak ko kasi para sa pagtanda namin

may makakasama ako at mag aalaga sa amin ng aking asawa.” (The reason why I have 6 children

is because if when I got old there is someone to along with that will care us with my husband).

The respondent states their viewpoints in having a large number on their family and our

last respondent, Mrs. Jeraldine Elilio that has 4 child, 2 Girls and 2 Boys. “Gusto mong magkaroon

ng 5 anak para sila ang mag-aahon sa amin sa kahirapan upang magkaroong ng magandang

buhay.” (I wanted to have 5 children because they are the way to rid in our poor life, to have a

better quality of life).

Observing and engaging to the residents of Sitio, Transmitter seems, they are lack

background information in Family Planning that’s why most of the Family consist approximately 7

to 10 member each family. Even on data analysis presented it seems the aforesaid community is

most dominant are children it’s clearly illustrated they ignoring the Family Planning. Most of them

has its own perspective and insights why they choose to have many children that greatly

contributes by issue of overlapping population.

. The common member of one family that yet not consider over polluted consist 4 up to 5

member, the 2 parent and 2 to 3 children. With that, parents are able to sustain and give the

necessities of their child, in terms of resources, education and medical assistance (PRC Social

and Demographic Trends, 2010).

Why Empathize with the Community?

“Wars of nation are fought to change maps. But wars of poverty are fought to map
change.” (MUHAMMAD ALI)

Poverty can change anything, can affect everything that’s why it is a considered as

epidemic disease worldwide with no antidote. Overpopulation can limit resources in

geographically speaking and economically speaking. It seems, ignoring the family planning have

a big chance will suffer to poverty and it could bring to change the quality life.

Knowing and understanding the perspective of residents in Sitio, Transmitter it implicates

they are not well known about what family planning is, benefits of right spacing-children, using

contraceptive in controlling the fertility. To create solution empathic relation must accomplish in

order to identify what are community needed, to deeply understand of the problem, realities and

challenges before to come up how these issue will be solve.

To sum it up, in solving poverty issue, overpopulation is a serious threat on its growth and

development. It affects the economics that serve as the building blocks of the aforesaid issue that

trying to solve. The ignorance of having a proper family planning indicates the most powerful

assumption to make poverty alive throughout the time. These type of issue must have their

corresponding solution/action must be prioritized to promulgate. In general, the government, local

government, and institution that responsible to fabricate effective response must generate to the

solution that truly terminate these issues consistently.

Stage 2.
DEFINE

Growing population causes many environmental, social and economic problem. People

are concerned about the natural resources and are unaware of the fact that overpopulation is a

real problem that endangers life on earth as we know it (Azeo, 2017).

Having an involvement setting in community and saw all the issues and challenges they

facing on, encounter all the matter that contributes to deteriorate all of issue them deep-felt.

Human action putting environment in strain such as limited resources and polluted. It is a real

problem especially for underdeveloped countries.

In identifying all of the problems of Sitio, it will lead what is the major problem that

contributes on Sitio make stagnant condition and what are the possible solutions to impose that

suitable for the problems in order to slack up deterioration of the issues, improve the quality of life

and enlighten the ignorance and lack of information.

The Identified Problems

The following are the aggregates problems in Sitio, Transmitter with regards to retrograde

overpopulated issue.

Residents of Sitio, Transmitter became tradition of having big families without family

planning led to increase population. Prefers to have big family of 7 to 10 and more than, believing

that their children will lessen their loneliness during the old gifts of God, more than wealth.

. First, Question of Genders parents want to have their first born child to be a boy/girl.

They ignore family planning because they want to have girl as their next child if they have only

boy or want to have boy if they have only girl.

Like the issue of Mrs. Corazon. (Now, I have 6 sons and their intervals is almost 1 year.

The reason why I have 6 children now because I wanted to have a daughter, yearly I’m trying but

it’s still a boy until my children’s reach out 6 because I really wanted to have a daughter).

MAY 2019.
A FIELD INQUIRY
Using the Design Thinking Process Method

She question the genders of her children that’s why her family has a large number and

now it make hard to budget their income. Meanwhile, her issue falls down on the other factors in

lack of family planning the inaccurate birth spacing. The interval of her children are almost 1 year

and that is too risk to the health of the baby even the mother.

Second, Lack of education background specifically on family planning. Overpopulation

can relate educational background. The less educated people, the more they have children. The

more educated people, the fewer children they want. These factors are related in Sitio,

Transmitter why it is overpopulated. They lack of educational background and informational

background in family planning, its effect and benefits.

Lastly, in general the reason why increasing population is rampant, many Filipino believe

that contraceptives are hindrances to a full sexual leisure of a couple and that endanger the health

of women. Seeing that family planning is an intrusion to private affair of married couple.

These are the assumption and perspective of the residents of Sitio, Transmitter why they

neglecting and ignoring the family planning. They choose their own way in building family that

could bring to them in less developed and stagnant condition of life.

The design thinker decided to enlighten the residents of Sitio, Transmitter specifically on

their inadequate background information in family planning because in enlightening and giving

concrete information it is possible that the issue of overpopulated and lack of information will be

solve or lessen the rapidly growing population.

Increasing women’s rights also result in slowing the population growth – that can be

observed in developed nations as women gain power in society and birth rates drop drastically

(Parfit, 2017).

Lack of information and background knowledge is the most major factor why the said

community is suffering to aforesaid issue. Some of the respondents are questioned by design

thinker about what Family Planning is and its effect. Most of them are no response to the question

that’s why the design thinker identified the foremost problem to solve among residents and the

A FIELD INQUIRY

possible action to do is conduct a household seminar in order enlighten and give ample solution

to the dilemma of Sitio, Transmitter Sta. Lucia Capas, Tarlac.

“The poorest social groups are incredibly ignorant. They don’t even know how a woman

becomes pregnant. Some of the believed they are infertile while they are still breast-feeding their

new-borns and others have never even heard of prevention or contraceptives. Others still are

terrified of unknown side effects. That’s why women keep having more children, even though they

neither want to nor have the economic means to provide for them (Dr. Bernardo, 2019)

According to the statement of Dr. Bernardo it seems that most of the poorest Filipinos are

the one who has a large number of family that contributes on rapidly growing population of the

Philippines. Ignorance, lack of educational attainment and lack of information of family planning

are the major caused.

Resident of Sitio, Transmitter look at this phenomenon as common societal issue, its

normal to have 5 to more than 10 offspring in the family without knowing the effects of having a

plenty number of family. Is residents of Sitio, Transmitter can develop their quality of life even they

experiencing the aforesaid issue? What are the possible ways? It will resolved or not?

Stage 3.
IDEATE

Everyone seems to have an opinion about everything, from family size, birth control and

child spacing. Why certain people do the family planning and why other’s doesn’t. As the

population is growing very rapidly the need for food, school, jobs and health services is also

increasing. As people tend to live in crowded situations on small piece of land, it demands more

resources and jobs but because of overcrowded places it is possible to have a scarcity of it.

In general, in order to reduce the adverse impact of over population, mitigation measures,

such as spreading awareness and education about overpopulation, enacting birth control

measures and regulations, and providing universal access to birth control devices and family

planning, must be taken.

In countries like China, the government has put policies in a place that regulate the number

of children allowed to a couple, and some leaders and environmentalist are suggesting that the

United Nations implement a China-like one-child policy globally to help control and reduce over

population gradually (EverthingConnects, 2014).

After the design thinker identify the issues and problem facing the Sitio and looked to the

different angle of the situation and condition. The design thinker draft all of the possible solution

that could help in preventing and lessening the effect of the aforesaid issues.

The Generated Solutions

According to Positive News Corporation, 2017, the following are the solutions to control

the rapid population growth and these are.

 Empower Women. It shows that women should access to reproductive health service to

find it easier to control the population growth while poverty also be on control. Also

United Nations Population Funds aim to tackle both issues at once, running

microcredit projects to women into advocates for reproductive health.

SSM 102 – GEOGRAPHY 2: PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY.

MAY 2019.
A FIELD INQUIRY
Using the Design Thinking Process Method

 Promote Family Planning. It simply educating men and women about contraception can

have a big impact in controlling the population growth.

 Government Incentives. They believed there should be a senior government official

responsible for addressing population-related issues. They urge government to

promote “responsible parenthood” and say subsidies should be limited to the first

two children unless the family is living in poverty.

To correlate to the issue of Sitio, Tranmitter these assumption in addressing the population

growth can also impose. The design thinker saw the situation on aforesaid community, the

seminar about promoting family planning are the best possible program to conduct.

Family Planning is one of the best seeing approach and leading strategies to improve

family life and welfare, control unwanted population growth, lessen the poverty, and aid the

development of the community.

According to World Health Organization, Family Planning is the key to slowing

unsustainable population growth and resulting negative impact on the economy, environment,

and national and regional development efforts.

Family Planning is the decision making process by couples, together or individually, on

the number of children that they would like to have in their lifetime, and the age interval between

children. This means that both halves of couple have equal rights to decide on their future fertility.

In planning their future children, partners need to have the right information on when and how to

get and use method of their choice without any form of coercion. Such planning therefore helps

mother and their children enjoy the benefits of birth spacing and having planned pregnancies.

The main objective of Family Planning is to achieve the low birth rate and a law death rate

because one of the factors that influence population growth is excess fertility. High fertility will be

the reason of fast population growth than the death rate. Explain the right interval year of having

children. Using contraceptive such as condoms, medical pills, hormone patches and

contraception injection. And making sure all residents of Sitio, Transmitter will have access to this

family planning seminar/service; empowering and developing in economically, socially, resources

and legally manner that results in the having equal say between partners in reproductive decision.

In addition, family planning reduces health risk to women and give them more control over

their reproductive lives. With better health and control over their lives, parents is able to give the

needs and wants of their children specifically on education and opportunities. Family Planning

directly contributes to the improvement of children’s health and growth, parents have ample time

and good health care for their children. Parents should be able to seek healthcare for them without

being constrained.

This strategy will see the outcome if it’s effective or not after the design thinker conducted

the Seminar bearing the theme Limit the Action (LimitAction) A Family Planning Household

Seminar in Sitio, Tranmitter an action preventing the overlapping population.

If most or all of these strategies will put into effect, global population likely would peak and

subsequently begin a gradual decline before the next generation, thereby ensuring sustainable

development of natural resources and global stability into the future. By implementing policies

that defend on human rights, promote education and reflect the true economic and environmental

cost of childbearing the world can halt population short of the 9 billion that so many analysts

expect (EverthingConnects, 2014).

It is not difficult for parents to clothe and feed their children if they can limit their family

size. The expenses that they need to care for a small sized family will be less, so they can save

more and be self-sufficient. With regard to social services, both the government and the family

invest less if the family and population size is small. This can help save essential resources

thereby contribute to the economic growth of the community and nation as a whole.

PROTOTYPE
“Thinking thousands of times on every action can bring satisfaction.”

A prototype is a rudimentary working sample, model, or just a simulation of the actual

product based in which its goal is to develop. Main motive behind prototyping is to validate the

design actual product. Sometimes, creating a prototype is called materialization as it is first step

of transforming the virtual or conceptualized design into the real physical form (Pahwa, 2017).

Concrete Solution are the way to develop and improve the quality of life. Tangible project

and product are the way resolved these problems. Everyone has its own role and contribution in

rapidly growing population. Generating solution to the problem and put it in to action with the

collaboration of the residents are the way to solve the issue in Sitio, Transmitter.

After the design thinker empathize the said community and interact and be involved on

their situation all of the problem it’s facing are identified and saw how their everyday life works.

Defining the problems of the community are recognized and the major factor that contributes why

it is stagnant and less developed caused by overpopulation. Design thinker form and create a

solution for the residents to help them how the building and organizing family.

The design thinker come up the solution in conducting a household seminar for the

residents of Sitio, Transmitter. It aims to help the community to lessen the rapidly growing

population and abolish the different perspectives like question gender of their children, to improve

their life in way to have plenty number on family and to enlighten that avoid the ignorance on the

said issue and on Family Planning.

The seminar contains what family planning is, the objectives, different ways of family

planning, importance of using contraceptives and the benefits of it. To make it more tangible the

design thinker give an brochure consists information about family planning and using

contraceptive, it serve as the tangible project for the community. This is the alternative way if the

design thinker cannot conduct the household seminar because the design thinker cannot assure

all of the residents will participate in the seminar with that the brochure will be the way to

disseminate the information about Family Planning. It is written in Filipino language in order to be

for International Development. (USAID) published by Health Promotion and Communication

(HealthPRO). This brochure was already validated by the DOH and Doctors and other

Organizations.

Furthermore it also help the teens to avoid this issue and give importance to the family

planning. It is a simple action but can give big impact to improve the quality of living and

appreciation of family planning to avoid the perspective that it is hindrances of the two married

couple. On the other hand the design thinker expected that these seminar will give impact and

VALIDATION

Main motive behind prototyping is to validate the design actual product. Sometimes,

creating a prototype is called materialization as it is first step of transforming the virtual or

The prototype is ready to validate by the community leader. Associate with the community

leader is needed on this stage. Validate the proposed solutions if the prototypes are relevant and

have an impact to improve and develop the condition, quality of living of the residents to the

perspective and perception of problems to the community. Community leader will be the way to

conduct the proposed solutions, having their assistance it will easy to interact with the community

residents.

The design thinker provides the letter to be approved by Hon. Rogelio Cubacub

(Kagawad) to conduct the Household Seminar and checklist that needs to validated to determine

if the solutions will have an impact that will enlighten and be well know the residents of Sitio,

Transmitter about Family Planning. Includes the suggestions and comments of the community

leader that make it more effective and sufficient to resolving the facing problems of the Sitio.

Identified Problems and Factors are well explained by design thinker. Objectives, Project

Proposal, Brochure and what the specific problems that needs to sought to address are

mentioned too. The essence of the Field Inquiry and its purpose was clearly presented by

community leader that’s why the discussion and the validation are easily ended.

Kagawad Rogelio Cubacub stated that, it is good that you are concerns to the problems

that we’re facing in our community, it gives realization to me that there’s still concerned to the

condition of our community, your project will brought improvement, enlightenment and doing

simple actions with collaboration of community leader that simple action will bring big effect

improvement. Your project was truly helpful.

Physical and Human Geography problems need to talk and to solve.

“Once you conduct the household seminar expect my assistance and guidance”

The Kagawad appreciated the efforts of the design thinker that’s why gladness and

happiness felt the design thinker. The efforts for the improvement of the community was not

CONCLUSION

Environmental issues are caused by humans and humans seeing It caused by

environment. Ignorance was the major problems in the atmosphere. We live in world of beauty

and plenteous resources, Paradise Island with the drastic difficulties and humans has major

attributes on these difficulties. Specifically the rapidly growing population oh human beings that

bring environmental depletion, lack of resources and more environmental issues.

Family Planning is one of the best seeing approach and leading strategies to improve

family life and welfare, control unwanted population growth, lessen the poverty, and aid the

development of the community.

Family Planning is the decision making process by couples, together or individually, on

the number of children that they would like to have in their lifetime, and the age interval between

children. This means that both halves of couple have equal rights to decide on their future fertility.

Women, Men or couples can choose from many contraceptives methods to help them plan

their family and prevent and unplanned pregnancy. Seeing the benefits of the Family Planning

can leads to the high standards of living. Different people want different things from a

contraceptives method. Some want a method that guarantees there is no chance of pregnancy.

Some want a quick return to fertility so they can get pregnant soon after stopping a contraceptives

method. Some do not want to think about contraceptives every time they have sex. Some don not

want to depend on their partner for the success of the method. Some women do not want to

remember to take a daily pill, while others find that easy.

“Human actions can control everything on earth and environment always adjust

on human needs. Limit the humans action in order to limit the destruction on

environment”

LECTURE

 FAMILY PLANNING
Family Planning is the decision making process by couples, together
or individually, on the number of children that they would like to have in their
lifetime, and the age interval between children. This means that both halves of
couple have equal rights to decide on their future fertility. In planning their future
children, partners need to have the right information on when and how to get and
use method of their choice without any form of coercion.
The practice of controlling the number of children in a family and the
intervals between their births, particularly by means of artificial contraception or
voluntary sterilization.
 OBJECTIVE OF FAMILY PLANNING
The main objective of Family Planning is to achieve the low birth rate
and a law death rate because one of the factors that influence population growth
is excess fertility. High fertility will be the reason of fast population growth than the
death rate. Practice the right interval year of having children. Promote using
contraceptive such as condoms, medical pills, hormone patches and contraception
injection.

 Why it needs to use CONTRACEPTIVES? s

Reasons for using contraception include personal desires medical
conditions that could threaten the health of mother or child and social concerns
about environmental effects of over-population.
Contraception is also sometimes called birth control or family planning.
There are many different contraceptive methods, including the use of hormone
medications, intrauterine contraceptive devices, barrier contraception, periods of
abstaining from sex, and surgery. Some methods are more effective than others;
all have advantages and disadvantages.

The following are the types of Contraceptive

 Natural methods
this methods do not make use of any contraceptive devices or
medications.
 Barrier methods
Barrier contraceptive devices physically block the access of sperms
to a woman's uterus and fallopian tubes. They include the diaphragm and
cervical cap, the male and female condom, and the spermicides ("sperm
killers") in form of foams, creams and gels.
 Hormonal methods
these are contraceptives for women and include oral
contraceptives, commonly known as the Pill, as well as hormonal
injections, implants and vaginal rings, all containing synthetic hormones.
Their method of action is to stop the ovaries from releasing an egg each
month (ovulation) and/or to keep the cervical mucus thick so that sperms
cannot easily pass through it.

Oral contraceptives are taken according to a prescribed daily schedule.

Injectable contraceptives are given as intramuscular injection and prevent
pregnancy for two or three months. Implants and vaginal rings, which are less
readily available in South Africa, prevent pregnancy by delivering contraceptive
hormones to the body from their site of application. Implants are small, rubber-like
rods placed under the skin of the arm, while vaginal rings are placed into the
vagina.

Hormonal methods require visiting a doctor for a prescription, injection, or

placement of implants/rings. Family planning includes contraceptives, sexuality
education and natural family planning techniques. Contraceptives include barrier
methods like diaphragms, condoms and hormonal birth control. It can also include
surgery (hysterectomies for women or vasectomies for men) or intrauterine

devices (worn inside a woman's vagina during intercourse). Sex education assists
families by teaching youth how their reproductive systems function, how to use
contraceptives and the truth about pregnancy and birth control. Natural family
planning techniques teach women and their sexual partners how to chart fertility
cycles. Couples can abstain from having sex or use a barrier protection method
during fertile times to prevent pregnancies. Learning about a woman's fertility
cycles can also benefit couples who are having challenges with desired
conception.

 Importance of Family Planning

Family planning is important for the health of a mother and her children, as
well as the family's economic situation. According to the United States Agency for
International Development, having children more than five years or less than two years
apart can cause both a mother and her children serious health consequences. The
financial consequence of having children involves the medical costs of pregnancy and
birth and the high costs associated with actually bringing up children. Since parents are
responsible for providing education, shelter, clothing and food for their children, family
planning has an important long-term impact on the financial situation of any family.
