The Effects of Aperture of a

Camera in the

Brightness and Focus

of a Photograph
Abstract
The research focuses on what aperture does and how it affects the photographs in
relation to its brightness, focus, and depth of view. It also covers the problem of the
study: which is the improper use of Aperture in a photograph due to the lack of
knowledge about it.

This research also stated the methods the researchers used to conduct their
experiments, which is to take several samples with different environments and lightings
in incrementing Aperture values starting from f/4 to f/22.

The results showed different outputs with contrasting brightness due to different
Aperture values configured when taking each of the samples.

With the information the researchers have observed from their results, they found out
how to recreate effects to further enhance the photographs drastically.
Introduction
Technology has advanced so much in our society that we rely on it in our day to day
basis, one of which is the use of any devices capable of taking a simple photograph.

This revolutionized the way we save and keep our precious moments in pictures and
ultimately, how we think about Photography.

Photography has become the medium of art for many people who took interest of it.
There are many factors that can affect a shot, and one important factor is Aperture.

There have been many photos that has been discarded just because the brightness of
the photo was too dim or the focus of the photo was too blurry. This would create a
photo that might be too bright or too dim than it should, one reason for this is the
inability to control the aperture of the camera to produce pictures with the perfect blend
of brightness.

The Aperture of a camera allows us to control the brightness and the focus of a picture
by widening or narrowing the hole within the lens to let a certain amount of light to pass.

The proper usage of Aperture allows the photos to have a unique look to it, as well as
enhance it drastically; making it appeasing to look at.

According to Cox, S. (2017), The wider the aperture, more light would pass and the
focus would be blurry. The narrower the aperture is, less light would pass and the focus
would be clear.

The researchers would like to conduct an experiment about aperture and how it can be
used in different environments to create various effects that can enhance the photo by
controlling the brightness and the depth of view of a photo.
Methodology
Being able to control the brightness and focus of a photo is crucial in producing a photo.
Knowing how Aperture works allows us to do many things that can make photos great
to look at.

The study was conducted to assess the importance and the effects of Aperture in
photos.

The researchers took several samples with a DSLR Camera in different environments
with different lightings to see the effects of having a wide aperture or a narrow aperture
in each of the photos.

The first two samples have been taken in well-lighted places with an Aperture size of
f/1.4, the f being the focal length and the value measuring the size of the hole in the
lens. The lower the value, the bigger the hole in the lens is, allowing more light to pass
through. The higher the value, the smaller the hole in the lens is, only allowing minimal
light to pass through.

The Aperture size will then increase every two samples, by then the next two samples
would be in a different place with different lightings, after doing so, we will compare the
samples with each other and see their differences.

The researchers would also evaluate each samples and see if the sample has a perfect
brightness and focus depending on the image being portrayed.
Results and Discussion

The researchers observed different brightness and depth of fields in each of the
samples. They have seen a much brighter view of the first picture with an Aperture
value of f/2.8 shown in Figure 1.1.

Figure 1.1

The sample that has an increasing aperture values becomes dimmer and dimmer. The
last sample shown in the Figure 1.1 has no brightness into it, thus making it impossible
to see the image.

Figure 1.2

The images shown above has contrasting brightness, and it is shown to also affect the
depth of view of an object as seen in the figure 1.2, the depth of view has changed from
f/4 and f/32.
Conclusion
The aperture of a camera decides the way you see the photo, as observed in the
samples. It can be seen to change depth of views and brightness because of the
increasing aperture values.

The researchers have observed a change in increasing aperture values, the more
aperture value, the dimmer the photo. However, due to this; it increased the depth of
view of the picture. The lesser the aperture value, the brighter the photo, this in turn,
made the photo hazier and unclear.

With the proper knowledge of using the function of aperture, the researchers can create
effects to enhance photos and overall change the way we see things in a photograph.
