Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Weld Bead (stringer)

I. Objectives
1. To identify the parts of the welder and to be able to accurately and effectively use it in the
welding process
2. To ignite easily the electrode by tapping or scratching and consequently create three (3)
straight lines using the dragging technique
3. To acquire and develop a skill in welding along the process of making the output

II. Bill of Materials

Quantity Material/s Price Bill

1 pc. Flat Bar (8 x 2 x 3/8 inches) 75.00 75.00
½ kilo Electrodes (E6012) 160.00 per kilo 80.00
1 pcs. Metal Grinding Disc 55.00 each 55.00
Total expenses 210.00

V. Procedure

Before Welding

1. Clear all combustible materials away from welding area and keep ignite items that quickly
may explode
2. Check electrode holder and ground clamps for positive connections
3. Inspect welding cables for broken insulation and frayed conductors
4. Turn on exhaust system
5. Wear woolen clothing and leather special fabric gloves
6. Keep your collar and pockets buttoned
7. Brush the metal to be free from dirt and rust
8. Insert the bare end of the electrode in the electrode holder and hold the end of the electrode.
Do not forget to attach the ground clamp
9. Wear a welding helmet
10. Turn the welder on. Set the proper amperage to get good penetration

During Welding

1. Protect other workers by giving them a signal to cover using a welding screen or observing
mask
2. Lower the helmet over your eyes
3. Hold the electrode at 90 degree
4. Scratch or tap the electrode in the metal to begin the process
5. Bring the electrode in contact with the work and raise the tip of the electrode to about 3/16
inch above the base metal
6. Slightly drag it maintaining the correct arc length for the electrode and the correct speed of
travel
After Welding

1. Be sure the machine is turned off

2. Release the remaining electrode to the welding table
3. Chip slag from a weld and make it sure to cover your eyes and those of others near you
4. Clean the metal by brushing it to remove dirt
5. If something is not good to your work, grind the metal to refresh and welding it again from
the top. Do not forget to consider all the safety measures upon doing the welding process

Grinding the flat bar

1. Check grinding wheel and grinding guard. Ensure the proper assembly of flanges and other
parts
2. Check the speed and make it sure that grinder should not rotate faster than the maximum
RPM stated on the wheel
3. Wear personal protective equipment such as goggles and ear cover
4. Attach the flat bar on the workbench clamp. Close it tightly to avoid any accident
5. Turn on the grinder and start grinding the flat bar to fix the metals
6. If the flat bar is already rejuvenate, turn off the grinder and remove the flat bar from the
workbench clamp
7. Start welding again
