Philippines and is commonly used as a alternative treatment for respiratory ailments such as cough
flu colds brochial asthma bronchitis due to there medical values can be derived from the lagundi
plants extensive research has been backed by the Philippines government department of health
which resulted to the approval to the bereau of food and drugs of the cough syrup and capsule with
lagundi as its active ingredients .This is definitely goodnews for those who prefer alternative cures to
their respiratory ailments but are not that been on the bitter taste. Everybody knows thatlagundi is
only used lagudi for treatment .Research on lagundi as as alternative in making pancake is
relatively new Aims to improve the possible outcome if the lagundi used for making pancake .More
is to know about the impact of the lagundi pancake on students satisfaction. Most Filipino pancake

also like a carbs ,iron contributes to the energizing properties of pancakes, are also good for strong
bones it is bone friendly benefits , calcium helps your nerves and muscles function properly, and
might also help control your blood pressure.
Acoording to National Science and Technology Authority of the University of the Philippines Los
Baños, from (1977 to 1982) NIRPROMP conducted a detailed survey of herbolaryos to identify those
herbal preparations that have promising medicinal properties. The survey included interviews with
1,000 herbolaryos and had detailed accounts of the herbs they used and any side effects caused. Out
of the 1,500 plants identified, NIRPROMP scientifically validated that 480 of them contained beneficial
medicinal properties.
Another R&D project was carried out in tandem and based on the information provided by the
herbolaryos. Members of this project poured over the records of the Department of Health to find out
the leading cause of morbidity at the time. The gathered data was used to prioritize the symptoms
and/or diseases that herbal medicine would have the best potential to treat. Researchers discovered
that respiratory problems were among the most common symptoms that held the potential to be
treatable with traditional medicine.
Armed with this cache of data, the researchers developed five criteria with which to test plants
against: safety, efficacy, quality, availability of raw material, and propagation studies of the raw herbs.
The first three criteria were necessary to ensure that the medicine would be safe and effective, while
the last two would ensure the sustainability of the supplies for R&D, clinical trials and eventual
commercialization. Long and detailed testing of each of the 480 plants ensued, and NIRPROMP
identified ten plants that were scientifically validated as safe, effective and sustainable.
Lagundi was one of these ten plants, and because respiratory problems were a primary concern
among the population, it was chosen to be the basis for a medicine to alleviate cough and asthma
symptoms. The beneficial properties of lagundi were first recognized during the survey of the
herbolaryos, in which 70% of them vouched for the plant’s efficacy in treating cough. The lack of any
reports of adverse side effects bolstered their claims, and the abundance of the plant throughout the
Philippines made lagundi R&D even more attractive.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Lagundi (Vitexnegundo) is an herb traditionally used in folk medicine as well as for food
treatments involving Lagundi. For example, it has been used in Ayurveda and in Chinese
medicine, according to specific areas or communities. For this reason, it has several names; in
Batad (Ifugao province of Philippines), a small village of indigenous people in the middle of rice
terraces, this plant is called Dabtan and it grows wild in this very biodiverse environment. In
Ilokos province some people call it Dangla. In a more urban context, the preservation of
traditional plants is carried on by small farmers groups, often supported by the church.
small, in peduncled cymes, forming large, terminal, often compound, pyramidal panicles.
The fruit is a succulent drupe, black when ripe, 5–6 millimeters in diameter and containing four
seeds. Seeds are oblong. Four- to six-month-old seedlings are used for transplanting in the field.
It can be reproduced readily from shoot cuttings. Vitexnegundo roots are strong and deep and
suckers profusely. It produces root suckers, which can also be utilized as planting material. It is
planted between June and September and it takes two years to grow.
It is pungent, bitter, and astringent in taste. It has been used as a hedge, ornamental plant,
growth promoter in agriculture, manure, pesticide, medicine, food, food protectant, household
Vitexnegundo has been put to numerous and varied types of uses over history. As a seed, it is
occasionally used as a condiment, such as a pepper substitute. When washed to remove the
bitterness, it can be ground into a powder and used as a flour. A tea/decoction is made from the
roots and leaves. Also, alcoholic extracts can be made by this decoction.
The lagundi plant is native to the Philippines and is commonly used as an alternative
treatment for respiratory ailments such as cough, flu, colds, bronchial asthma, pharyngitis,
and chronic bronchitis. Due to these medicinal values that can be derived from the lagundi
plant, extensive research has been backed by the Philippine government’s Department of
Health which resulted to the approval of the Bureau of Food and Drugs of the cough syrup
and capsule with lagundi as its active ingredient. This is definitely good news for those who
prefer alternative cures to their respiratory ailments but are not that keen on the bitter taste.
Islands and has been used for centuries because of its therapeutic properties. It is a large
shrub which can grow up to five meters tall; with a single thick woody stem like a trunk. Its
leaves are pointed and having five leaflets set like a hand. Most of the parts of the lagundi
plant have medicinal values which is why it is actively promoted by the Philippine Department
of Health (2018).The usual process in the preparation of lagundi concoction is through boiling
the parts of the plant, letting it steep and then straining the parts. The concoction is then
drank three times a day to relieve various ailments such as asthma, pharyngitis, rheumatism,
cough, colds, fever and flu and other bronchopulmonary disorders. For skin disorders, the
decoction (process of boiling in water) of leaves and roots can be applied directly to skin.
Even though the lagundi plant has lots of various benefits, let us still exercise caution in its
use and consult our doctor especially if there are other medicines that we are taking.
Vitexnegundo or simply called as Lagundi in the Philippines is a native shrub found in swamps and
grows up to 8 meters high with a thick and woody stem-like trunk with palmately-like leaves of 3 to 5
pointed leaves. Lagundi flowers are blue to lavender. They are also found in eastern Africa, Iran,
Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India, Burma, China, Japan, Indo-China, Thailand and in the entire
Malesian region, and are also cultivated in Europe, Asia, and North America and West Indies.
Lagundi has been used as herbal medicine by Filipinos which was backed up by the Department of
Health and some Philippine-based scientists who made studies about its effectivity as treatment for
respiratory ailments. Generally, lagundi is taken to cure coughs, asthma, and other respiratory
concerns. Jzsimplyme (2012). Until 2009, the technology for lagundi tablets and syrup was
transferred through licensing agreements between PCHRD, a government entity, and the private
sector. However, according to Republic Act 10055, otherwise known as the “Philippine Technology
Transfer Act of 2009” (the Act), technology developed backed by government funding must be
completely transferred to entities such as universities or companies that can translate this technology
into useful products and services. The goal of the Act is to promote and facilitate the transfer,
dissemination, and effective use, management and commercialization of IP, technology and
knowledge resulting from R&D funded by the government for the benefit of the national economy and
Based on this new policy, PCHRD formally transferred the lagundi cough medicine syrup formula to
UPM, which would then be tasked with further R&D, licensing and commercialization activities. In
October 2010, Azarias Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Inc. (Azarias) made an application to UPM to
become the first licensee of lagundi syrup under this new framework. Following the evaluation and
recommendation of PCHRD, the agreement was officially signed in January 2011. The licensing
agreement was the first of its kind between a public R&D organization (UPM) and a private
corporation (Azarias) in the Philippines since the Act was ratified in 2010.
