Acquiring Data

1. Manual Labeling

2. From observing behaviours

3. Download from websites / partnerships

Data is messy

1. Garbage in, garbage out

2. Data problems
- Incorrect labels
- Missing values

3. Multiple types of (unstructured) data: text, image, audio

Machine Learning vs Data Science

computers the ability to learn knowledge and insights from

Neural networks were originally

(Artificial) Neural Network inspired by the brain, but the details

of how they work are almost
completely unrelated to how
biological brains work.

Anything you can do with 1 second of thought, we probably soon can automate
What machine learning today can and cannot do

“The toy arrived two days late, so I wasn’t able to give it to

my niece for her birthday. Can I return it?”

Refund Request Oh sorry to hear that. I hope

your niece had a good birthday.
Yes, we can help with…
What happens if you try?

“Where do I write a review?” “Thank you for your email”

What makes an ML problem easier

1. Learning a “simple” concept. <1 sec

2. Lots of data, available.

3. There’s a clear SOP for the task.

Self-driving car

2. Need high accuracy

Strengths & Weaknesses of Machine Learning

ML tends to work best when:

1. Learning a “simple” concept
2. There are lots of data available

ML tends to work poorly when:

1. Learning complex concepts from small amounts of data
2. It is asked to perform a new type of data (e.g: analyze email data
using chat data model)

NLG Case Study: Toutiao

USD 22B AI-powered Media Company

of Bytedance
Key Facts

• Founded in 2012, now with 120 million DAU

with average 1 hour 13 minutes of usage
every day.

• Aggregating stories and videos from

over 1.1 million publisher accounts.

• During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Toutiao’s

Xiaomingbot AI published 450 news stories,
some going online as quickly as two
seconds after a match ended.

How it works
• Data sourcing from:
• Real time score updates from the Olympics organization
• Images from an image-gathering-company it had recently
acquired to find relevant visual media
• Monitoring live text commentary about the game. Started
with four sports: Table Tennis, Tennis, Badminton and
Women’s Soccer

• Integration of NLP with contextual image recognition. They

ended up with a combination of a grammar-based
representation for generating story templates, a ranking
algorithm to select relevant sentences from live text
commentary, and an image-text matching algorithm to tie it
all together.
