CLOTHING & TEXTILES 12 COURSE OUTLINE

Objectives:
 Identify the principles and elements of design used in textiles products.
 Explain and use appropriate textile terminology
 Describe career opportunities in the design, production, and marketing of textiles.
 Identify the historical and cultural factors that influence the use of textiles.
 Create a variety of textile items using commercial patterns.
 Understand the methods of designing original patterns.
 Create at least one textile item using a “difficult” or challenging fabric.

Outline:
1) Introduction
- Guidelines for clothing and textiles room and equipment
- Safety

2) Equipment
- Review parts of the sewing machine and sergers
- Iron / pressing & tools
- Basic sewing equipment and supplies

3) Before you sew: Terms and Techniques


- Pattern / construction markings
- Selecting pattern sizes and measurements
- Pattern Drafting and Samples
- Garment Styles & Parts

4) Sewing Basics
- Sewing samples
- Advanced techniques

5) Theory
- Working with challenging fabrics
- History of fashion
- Fashion illustration
- Designing original garment (techniques & samples)
6) Sewing Projects
- a minimum of 3 projects must be completed during the semester
and include the following:
- zipper, collar, sleeves, buttons & buttonholes, waistband or yoke,
lining & interfacing
- challenging fabric (eg. Plaid, velvet, satin, lace, leather, fur, etc.)
- original design skirt or other garment (use Pattern Maker program
for sloper)

Suggestions for projects and order:


a) Little Dresses for Africa – knit fabric
b) Original design (skirt – waistband, zipper,
buttonhole, hand hem or any design you wish)
c) Difficult fabric ( grad dress ) or Jacket
d) Project of your choice (if more points needed)

*** It is expected that students in Textiles 12 will choose more challenging


commercial patterns than junior grades and create projects at a higher skill level.

Course Evaluation
70% Practical Projects and samples
30% Written work (worksheets, assignments, quizzes)

Course Expectations

 Students are to have a properly equipped sewing box at all times.


 Materials are to be in class by due dates, unless exceptions have been made.
 Respect all equipment and follow lab procedures.

ALL PROJECT WORK IS TO BE DONE AT SCHOOL – WORK DONE AT


HOME WILL RESULT IN A ZERO MARK.
