Fire Pumps

Before ordering a fire pump, consult FM Approvals regarding size, type of driver, suction supplies and location. Proposals for fire
pump installations, including plans showing location and piping connections, should be sent to FM Global for review before the order
is placed. Give the manufacturer complete data, including rated capacity, net head and suction head. Contracts for pump installations
or changes should be let subsequent to acceptance of plans and subject to satisfactory field tests by FM Global.
The pump manufacturer or his authorized representative is responsible for furnishing a complete unit consisting of pump, driver and
necessary accessories, all according to FM Global's standards.
Satisfactory performance in an operating test after installation should be guaranteed. A new fire pump installation is not acceptable
until FM Global has witnessed a satisfactory field acceptance test. This will include a test of endurance of the pump and reliability of
the power supply.
Exact horsepower requirements for each pump must be determined by a shop test on the specific pump. Approximate horsepower
requirements at rated pump conditions are as follows:

In the listings on the following page, rated net head represents the amount of pressure boost obtainable from a pump of a given type
and impeller size when operating at rated speed.
The rated net head range indicates that impellers of various diameters are obtainable for the given type of pump.
Although not recommended for installations where suction is normally taken under lift, FM Approved pumps have been tested for
proper operation under negative suction conditions up to 15 ft (5 m) at 150% of rated capacity.

Centrifugal Fire Pumps, Horizontal Split-Case Type

FM Approved horizontal split-case type centrifugal fire pumps are relatively simple to operate and repair. These pumps have a
two-part casing divided in a horizontal plane through the shaft centerline. They are well suited to fire protection service where a
water supply is obtainable under a positive head.

Horizontal Mounted
5x4x12 SSC
Note: Standard construction includes ASA 125 suction and discharge flanges. For ASA 250 discharge flanges, suffix H is
added to type designations.

I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Cla-Val Co. requested an Approval examination of their water pressure relief valves, Model 50B-
4KG1 and 2050B-4KG1, in sizes 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch NPS with alternative pilot valves and cover plate
bolts from those currently FM Approved and discussed in the Approval Report for Project ID
0Y2A4.AH dated June 16, 1995.

1.2 This Report may be reproduced only in its entirety and without modification.

1.3 These devices were examined in accordance with the requirements of the FM Approval Standard
listed below:

Title Class Number Date

Water Pressure Relief Valves 1361 August 1993

1.4 The devices discussed in this Report will appear in the Approval Guide, an online resource of FM
Approvals, under Fire Protection / Fire Pump Installation Systems / Water Relief Valves. See
Appendix I for the complete Approval Guide listing for this product.

II DESCRIPTION

2.1 Rated Working Pressure

The Model 50B-4KG1 and 2050B-4KG1 water pressure relief valves discussed in this Report have
a rated working pressure of 300 psi (2070 kPa) for sizes 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch NPS.

2.2 Design

The Model 50B-4KG1 and 2050B-4KG1 water pressure relief valves discussed in this Report
remain unchanged from those discussed and Approved under Approval Report ID 0Y2A4.AH
dated June 16, 1995 except for the following modifications:

x Cover plate bolts, studs and nuts ± alternative material, 303 Stainless Steel
x Pilot Valves ± see Table 2.2

The alternative pilot valves for the water pressure relief valves covered in this Report are provided
below.

Model Designation Body Material Spring Range, psi (kPa)

CRL Bronze 100 psi (670 kPa) to 300 psi (2070 kPa)
CRL60 Bronze 20 psi (135 kPa) to 200 psi (1380 kPa)
CRL60 Stainless Steel 20 psi (135 kPa) to 200 psi (1380 kPa)
CRL60 Bronze 100 psi (670 kPa) to 300 psi (2070 kPa)
CRL60 Stainless Steel 100 psi (670 kPa) to 300 psi (2070 kPa)

Table 2.2 ± Pilot Valves

2.3 Adjustable Range

The water pressure relief valves discussed in this Report have an adjustable outlet pressure range
from either 20 psi (135 kPa) to 200 psi (1380 kPa) or 100 psi (670 kPa) to 300 psi (2070 kPa)
depending on the supplied pilot valve and pilot valve spring. Please refer to Approval Guide listing
in Appendix I for all Approved water pressure relief valve configurations.

III EXAMINATIONS AND TESTS

3.1 Hydrostatic Strength

3.1.1 Water Pressure Relief Valve

Sample 4 and 8 inch NPS Model 50B-4KG1 water pressure relief valves, considered
representative of all valves discussed in this Report, were tested for hydrostatic strength. Sample
water pressure relief valve were subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of 1200 psi (8280 kPa) for
five minutes. This pressure represents four times the rated working pressure. There was no
apparent damage to the bodies of either valve as a result of this test. These results are considered
satisfactory.

3.1.2 Pilot Valves

Sample Model CRL60 pilot valves in bronze and stainless steel, considered representative of all
pilot valves discussed in this Report, were subjected to hydrostatic strength testing. The
samples were subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of 1200 psi (8280 kPa) for five minutes. This
pressure represents four times the rated working pressure. There was no apparent damage to the
bodies of any valve as a result of this test. These results are considered satisfactory.

IX CONCLUSION

The Cla-Val Co. water pressure relief valve, Model 50B-4KG1 and 2050B-4KG1, in sizes 3, 4, 6 and
8 inch NPS, as discussed in this Report meet FM Approvals requirements when manufactured at the
facility listed in Section VI. Since a duly signed Master Agreement is on file for this manufacturer,
Approval is effective the date of this Report.
