1.

Compound: Two different atoms chemically bonded together (year 8)

Ionic: A compound consisting of a non-metal and a metal. The metal gives electrons and the non-metal receives
electrons.

Example: Sodium Chloride (Sodium = metal, Chlorine = non-metal)

Covalent: Consists of two non-metals bonded together. The atoms share electrons

Example: Water (H20)

Question 3:

Acid has a pH level of less than 7 and Base has a pH level of more than 7

Types of Chemical Reaction:

Complete the following chemical reactions by writing out the products
1. Acid + Metal - salt + Hydrogen gas
Experiment: Added Magnesium into a test tube with HCl
(Hydrochloric acid). Used the ‘pop test’ to indicate the
presence of hydrogen gas
- Exothermic reaction: released heat and became hotter

2. Acid + Carbonate - salt + carbon dioxide + water

Experiment: Added Copper Carbonate (blue powder) and HCl into a test
tube with tubes.

Tested for presence of carbon dioxide by seeing if it turned:

- clear lime water (CaOH) to cloudy/white
- green water (universal indicator) to yellow

3. Acid + Base  salt + water (AKA NEUTRALISATION REACTION)

Experiment: Took an acid and added universal indicator to turn the acid
red. Took a base and added universal indicator to turn the base purple.
Acid used = HCl (Hydrochloric Acid)
Based used = NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide)
4. Precipitation
Occurs when two soluble salts/solutions is mixed and an insoluble
substance (precipitate) is formed.
Note: you don’t need to know the solubility rules
Experiment: Tray of wells with multiple types of salts in bottles
Lead Nitrate (aqueous) + Copper Sulfate (aqueous)  Lead Sulphate (solid) +
Copper Nitrate (Aqueous)

Reactions Rates:
To increase reaction rates:
- Use a catalyst (something that speeds up a reaction)
- Increasing surface area (eating a whole lollypop vs crushing it)
- Increase temperature
Dichotomous Keys- Emoticon
LG: To create a Dichotomous key for emoticons.
Reminder:
- Use Ruler to draw lines
- Each characteristic is under a “yes” or “no” category
Task 1:
- Stick the emoticons into your book and classify them as either “living” or non-
“living”
Living emoticons: rat, mushroom, turtle, snail, poodle, elephant
Non-Living emoticons: plane, guitar, house, burger, ice cream, car, light bulb,
pizza
Task 2:
- Select 5 emoticons and create a dichotomous key. Get it checked by Miss Tang
Task 3:
- Select 10 emoticonso and create a dichotomous key.
