of Electronic Media Use Among University Students
Wade C. Jacobsen, B.S., and Renata Forste, Ph.D.
Abstract-
Little is known about the influence of electronic media use on the academic and social lives
of university
students. Using time-diary and survey data, we explore the use of various types of electronic
media among first year
students. Time-diary results suggest that the majority of students use electronic media to
multitask. Robust
regression results indicate a negative relationship between the use of various types of
electronic media and first semester
grades. In addition, we find a positive association between social-networking-site use,
cellular-phone
communication, and face-to-face social interaction.

Abstract:
In today’s world, social media is playing an indispensable role on the learning behaviour
of university students to achieve sustainable education. The impact of social media on
sustainable
education is becoming an essential and impelling factor. The world has become a global
village and
technology use has made it a smaller world through social media and how it is changing
instruction.
This original study is amongst the few to perform a focalized investigation on revealing the
relationship
between positive and negative characteristics of social media and the learning attitude of
university
students for sustainable education. However, this study aims to examine the constructive and
adverse
factors that impact on students’ minds and how these helped students to share positive and
negative
aspects with others. It is increasingly noticeable that social networking sites and their
applications
present enormous benefits for as well as risks to university students and their implications on
students’
psychological adjustment or learning behaviours are not well understood. This study adapted
the cluster
sampling method, and respondents participated from five selected regions. Researchers
distributed
1013 questionnaires among the targeted sample of university students with an age range of 16
to 35 years,
and they collected 831 complete/valid responses. This study applied the social gratification
theory to
examine students’ behaviour practicing social media usage. This study specifically identified
18 adversarial
and constructive factors of social media from the previous literature. The findings revealed
that the
usage of social media in Pakistan has a negative influence on a student’s behaviour as
compared to
positive aspects. Results may not be generalized to the entire student community as findings
are specific
to the specific respondents only. This study presents a relationship between antithetical and
creative
characteristics of social media and exhibits avenues for future studies by facilitating a better
understanding
of web-based social network use.

Abstract-
Social media are web-based services that gives individual the opportunity to create either a
public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, add a list of others to with they share
a connection and view and transvers their list of connections and those made by others within
the system. Therefore, this study was carried out with the aim of examining the impact of use
of social media on students’ academic performance in Malaysian Tertiary Institution. In other
to measure social media platforms a questionnaire was developed based on past literatures.
The independent variables include: time appropriateness, time duration, Nature of Usage,
Health Addiction, Friend-People connection and security/privacy problems while the
dependent variable was student academic performance. This research adopted descriptive and
explanatory research design. It also employed the use of cross-sectional survey method using
survey questionnaires that contains 42 items with a Likert Scale (Disagree-1 and 5 for
Agree). The sample of 102 students from Erican College was selected using convenient
sampling method. The data collected was analysed using description means and regression
via SPSS 21. The Pearson’s correlation coefficients of four independent are correlated with
student’s academic performance while two are not. However, using the regression analysis
four variables is significant which include: Time appropriateness, people-friend connection,
nature of Usage and health addiction while Time duration and security/privacy problems are
not significant. Thus, considering the abnormal use of Social media platforms by students, it
is expedient that Universities and colleges in Malaysia educate their students to positively use
these platforms for educational purposes which will eventually result in a positive impact on
their academic performance.

Abstract-
The study of this research aims to create an immense level of awareness among the youth
exposed to such
social networking sites and findings will not only bear results as to how adversely and
positively is the youth affected
by the usage of these sites but also will help the youth to understand the usage of these
networking sites efficiently.
Facebook, My Space, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype and Ning are a few such sites that attract
maximum of the youth
to tune in to them and thereby embodies their own merits and demerits that desperately need
to create an actual
picture among the youth. It has now become an evident and usual sight to face individuals
being insensitive to
chat in worshipping places, homes when relatives and guests are around, highways, schools,
colleges and social
gatherings wherein they are so preoccupied and engrossed into their phones that they do not
even bother to look up
as to where they are which results in their inability to prioritize as to what is important and
what isn’t. Attention has
thus, been shifted from real to virtual world and visible to invisible friends.
