Title of the project-

“FEAR OF PUBIC SPEAKING AMONGST CHILDREN”

A. Introduction

As we were asked to study on any issue of this world which we can identify and work on
it to resolve the problem and that should not cost us any amount of money. And so we
discussed about many issues that people are facing in their day to day life. We also had
some interaction with common people and we found out there are ocean of problems people
are suffering from. For instance people are having clashes with their family members,
people are going through a high level of depression due to social responsibilities,
relationships, work pressure, etc., some people are suffering from severe and incurable
diseases, corruption and politics in each and every industry, stress of unemployment, global
warming, poverty, fear of facing people and groups, not following traffic rules, race of
being first and if not succeed then taking so much of stress for that, lack of motivation, and
so on.
Though it was very difficult to choose one problem out of all. But after having deep
discussion, our team of three people me, Sameer, and Shivam came up to a conclusion and
choose to resolve issue of the fear of public speaking amongst children.
We chose this issue because when we had a conversation with some children, and we found
out that even if the child is intellectual, and having good sense of knowledge but is not able
to express it due to the fear of facing public. And as we all know these children are the
future of the country and if they won’t be able to raise their voice for the country then who
is going to take the charge of the country. Another reason is children are very shy and feels
humiliated easily if they fail to succeed in any task.
So we started working towards this issue from past 2 months and we acknowledged
different kinds of strategies to bring the change in the children and for that we took four
children, namely, Shambhavi, Shivangi, Pavani, and Sanskriti. And they all are in
between the age group of 10-15 years old.

In this research we identified the problem, after that we figure out different strategies to
overcome the problem, after executing all the possible strategies we finally did assessment
of the whole problem whether we were able to resolve this problem or not. And we learn
many a things from this research which we were also not aware about.
Statement of the problem:
Communication is the backbone of our society. Without communication skills, the ability to
progress in the working world and in life, itself would be nearly impossible. Throughout primary
school it is easy to be the student who sits in the back of the classroom and avoids raising his/her
hand to dodge such situations. But in the working world, public speaking is a vital skill to have
and to hone. A great public speaker attains the power to motivate his or her audience to do
something, stop doing something, change a behavior or reach objectives. The ability to inform is
one of the most important aspects of public speaking. From presenting research papers and
presentations in schools to presenting ideas and pitches to your boss, or client, informative public
speaking is a vital component of a successful career across all work fields.
Being able to make ourselves confident, and directing the self-confidence that we have to speak
before people is a hard effort. To be able to have this confidence, individuals need to make sure
that they are proficient in the language. Lack of proficiency in speaking is seen as a major
contributor towards children’s oral contribution in the classroom and during teaching and learning
session. The first problem that results in silence of the children during classroom interaction and
instruction is due to the fact that the student’s level of knowledge proficiency, compared to others,
are relatively different. The sample group of children has differences among them in terms of
knowledge. This means that their level of competency, differs from one another. Therefore, with
this problem, they become more afraid of making mistakes if they speak, thus resort to being silent
and avoid any oral communication in the classroom or in groups. Thus, these contributing factors
will be further investigated in this research in order to come up with means for effective change.
In this research we found out many strategies and applied on them to build up the confidence in
the children and improving their communication skills.
Based on the problems explained above, this topic best interests me since I will benefit from the
findings of this research whereby I can use it to overcome any difficulties pertaining to this issue
for the betterment of my teaching and instruction as a guide for the children.
Objectives of the study
The purpose of this research is to investigate children’s perceptions, problems and experiences of
speaking in front of the masses. By identifying these three components; children’s’ perception,
difficulties, and ways to overcome this matter, this study generally focuses on how to help the
children to overcome the barrier that exists. The main objective is to make children understand the
importance of public speaking in the long run be it, on professional front, or in personal life. One
can raise their voice for something only if they have its knowledge and are confident enough to
express it. Therefore, I hope that this study will help them to be able to speak in public in the long
run.

Specifically, the research is conducted to fulfil the following objectives:

To find out about children’s facing difficulties in public speaking in front of the people.

Personality development of the children.

To propose suggestions on how barriers and difficulties of public speaking can be minimized, or
eliminated.

To build their confidence level so that they will be able to express their ideas in front of people
without hesitation.

To improve their vocabulary so that they don’t lack with the words.

How to capture and maintain the audience’s attention so that there is no chance of lacking of
interest.

To build their own style of presenting their topics or ideas.

Increasing childrens’satisfaction and confidence.

This research will also help me to understand this problem in depth and I will be able to learn about
new ways through which this problem can be solved.
Research methodology
Research mode
One crucial phrase that can be applied in mastering the public speaking is “practice makes man
perfect”. In order to be competent in public speaking, children should speak the language every
opportunity they get. Surprisingly, many children do not use opportunity they get because of the
fear. This is why we decided to conduct a survey to investigate this matter. We want to find out
whether the reason they are not able to speak in public is innate or related to their surroundings.
This is important because we need to recognize and eliminate the inhibitors that prevent children
from Glossophobia (fear of public) so that we may find ways to overcome this problem.

This chapter looks into how the survey has been carried out. In this research, it is discussed in
detail about the subjects of this study, the instruments used to carry out this study, how the data
had been collected, and finally the way the data had been analysed.

From this survey, the whole process, from distributing the instrument, conducting and collecting
the data, to the way of analysing all the data of the study is being described precisely.

To know about why they are facing difficulties in public speaking we have prepared some
questions to be ask to them to know more about them.

We also made them do many activities to improve their confidence and speaking skills which are
mentioned below.
Questionnaire

1. Do you fear speaking in public because you think how people will think about you?
Yes
No

2. Have you ever been a part of any public speaking activity like debate or group discussion
or compeering or any other?

Primary Data

Case profile/Background

The subjects for our study are 4 children. The subjects of our study are all school going children.
We chose to distribute our instruments to all the four children. Furthermore, all the respondents
are aged between ten to fifteen years old. While choosing for the subjects for this study, we did
not encounter any difficulties as there are many children who are facing this problem badly. So,
choosing respondents was not a barrier for us to continue the study.

We even had close discussion with all the children about this fear, in which we acknowledged
many reasons out of which majorly how people will think about them or the audience will make
fun of them is the biggest reason of fear. There are many other reasons too like lacking in
vocabulary and knowledge is also one of the reason, some are having good knowledge but not
having good vocabulary and vice-versa. We also observed, children are also having lack of self-
confidence and are so much shy that they even feel shy to ask for a glass of water.

When asked from the children, they said, what they think won’t be considered and will not interest
anyone, which is why they speak merely. Some said they don’t get familiar in new environment
easily so they choose to be quite every time.

But one positive point that we observed is, that they all knew that public speaking is very important
and is a necessity for each and every individual. They were keen to overcome this fear and all of
them participated in all the activities that we offered them and completed almost all the tasks given
to them. They too find the topic very interesting and all the activities were building up more interest
in them to continue helping us in the study and their self-development as well.
Preliminary investigation

In doing this survey, the method chosen is survey questionnaire. The reason for choosing this
method is that it is easier to analyse the data provided. The survey questionnaire will be distributed
among 4 respondents. In order to accumulate the data the instrument is will help us to know; (a)
Student’s Perception, (b) Difficulties, and (c) Ways to Help.

The questionnaire consists of ten (10) survey questions pertaining to the survey topic. From those
10 questions, six questions had been asked in a form of YES/NO, three question as descriptive,
and one multiple choice questions. The YES/NO question asks the respondents to tick either Yes
or No. The descriptive questions needs all the respondents to answer in brief. Meanwhile, the open-
ended question asks the respondents to state their reason/s in answering the related question.

Based on the findings of the study, there are few conclusions that can be made. Throughout the
findings, we found out that almost all the children have the rate of 4-7 on the speaking proficiency
scale of 10. We also found out that half of the overall children seldom participate in speaking
activities in front of public or with their friends or peers. Some of them do have good writing skills
but however, that does not bring enough motivation to encourage them to speak in public. Many
of the children have a view that doing practice plays a big role in encouraging them to build self-
confidence. From the data collected, we found out that, most of the respondents state that lack of
self-confidence is the greatest inhibitor in public speaking.

Furthermore, we had planned some activities which we asked the subjects to do which will help
them in eradicating their fear and anxiety about public speaking which also helped us in finding
out the outcomes of the study, and improvement in the children.
Successive information
Initially the children were not much comfortable, so they were not opening up fully with us, for
making them comfortable we exchanged some jokes with them and played some games as well.
Finally after being comfortable with us, they told us reasons that we were also not much known
about. Those reasons were complex one and very uncommon reasons. For instance, one of the
child told us that she feels that she does not look good, that is why she avoids public speaking, and
another child told us the she fears because she is always told by her parents that she is good for
nothing as she is average in studies, so her surroundings don’t motivate her to be confident enough
even if she wants to.

As a child when I was in this stage I also had fear of stage and I chose a profession in which this
quality is a must necessity without this you cannot survive in this industry and in this way I
overcome my problem. But it is not that easy to overcome this. A period of two months is not
enough to solve this problem, but we tried our best efforts to overcome this problem in children
and we even succeed to a large extent.
Strategies Development
All possible alternatives
After identifying and analysing we build up some strategies of how we can overcome this fear.
Since it is necessary for children to overcome this fear not just for some days or weeks but this
should be overcome for the long run. So for this we figure out all the possible tasks we can give to
them like firstly we asked them about their intro and exchanged some jokes so that they get
comfortable, then after that we began with our first activity in which
We asked all 4 to talk individually about their dream holiday for 3 minutes.
Then, in another session we showed them a picture on which they need to tell a story on whatever
they depict from the image, but on the spot they were not able to make a good story so we gave
them time to prepare the story and then come up with the story in the next session, and in this
session they performed bit better and this is going to help them in improving their visualisation
techniques.
Another activity that we planned was to play passing the parcel game, they have to select the chit
and whatever topic is written they have to speak on that for 1 minute which will improve their
presence of mind.
We also plan to have a debate between them on a topic in two will speak in favour and another
two will speak against the topic which helps them overcoming the anxiety.
We also planned a group discussion round for all four, we gave the topic “smartphones are a
boon or a curse “
We also planned one session in which we will be giving them a counselling and motivating them
for public speaking, so that they understand the importance of public speaking
We also planned to ask the children to interact randomly with people around which will help
building their confidence level.
We prepared a questionnaire for the children to know more about them.

Chosen strategy

Since choosing strategy is one of the most important and challenging part of the research as all the
outcomes are based on the strategies identified and executing them in a right way. Out of all the
strategies we discussed, we shortlisted the best ones that we can apply on the children which will
help them improving their public speaking skills. Since change cannot be brought in a day, it
requires time and dedication. The subjects of our study are suffering from the Glossphobia which
need to be prevented. So for that we first figure out why these children are suffering from this
problem, and what is the major reason behind it. So firstly, we asked the children to fill the
questionnaire, after that we will be able to know a bit of things about them, and whatever answer
they have wrote in the questionnaire they were supposed to give a reason behind that, which is
also one of the public speaking activities.

Another thing that we did is we showed them a picture and asked them to form a story on that.
Instantly they were not able to depict properly, so we asked them to come up with a story in the
next session, and in the next session children came up with good stories and narrated that in front
of each other. Some were doing a good job comparatively while some still needs to be work on it.

Another strategy that we applied in a session was we motivated and counsel them about the
importance of public speaking in which we mainly focused on these points:

As public speaking boosts your confidence levels there are more chances of you succeeding at job
interviews

You will be more comfortable working in a team and giving effective presentations and seminars
in the workplace. This improves your professional life and your relationship with your colleagues.

As a confident speaker you will be comfortable breaking the ice and starting conversations with
strangers. This expands your social circle and improves your personal life.

If you are passionate about public speaking then you can also consider being a professional
speaker. There are many people out there who make a living out of speaking or use it as a source
of additional income.
We also ask children to do some self-practicing like preparing on a topic and practicing it in front
of the mirror or in front of any of the family member, can also find one speaker you really admire
and find YouTube videos of him/ her speaking.
Make notes on what you like about them; what they do better than you.
Steal their style (good artists copy, great artists steal); since you like them ... it'll be easier.

Finally, it's a matter of practice, practice, practice and practice. It takes a lot of practice to get
really good.

In this way we motivated them for public speaking which eventually resulted in being better
public speaker, which we noticed in them.

These were the main strategies that we applied on the children and it worked to a large extent.
We have addressed the difference from day 1 to up till now.
Implementation

Task allocation

As we have chosen 4 subjects for our study. Since we shortlisted any strategies which we applied
on the children. We have divided activities. Some activities Sameer will do, some Shivam will do
and some activities will be executed by me.

Sameer moderated the introduction part and then one activity, in which a story is to be narrated by
seeing the picture, was executed by Sameer. He also made them play the game passing the parcel
game in which children are selecting a chit and speaking extempore on the topic that is there in the
chit. We gave topics like, Happiness, Mother, Father, School, My best friend, if you want to be
any animal then which one you want to become and why?, tell me something about your favourite
actor/actress, your dream holiday, etc. In these activities I and Shivam were assessing each child
on the basis of their fluency, body language, pronunciation, presence of mind, and knowledge.
And we analysed that some are good with knowledge but not good with the language and
confidence, while some are good with body language but are not good with knowledge.

Another activity was carried out by Shivam in which he made the children fill the questionnaire
and on the basis of questionnaire we made analysis of why they are lacking in public speaking. In
this we found out they have more fear of how people will percept about them or people will make
fun of them is one of the biggest fear in them, so we need to build up confidence level in them so
we asked them to have a group discussion in which they will exchange ideas with each other on a
topic “smartphones are a boon or a curse “without being offensive about that, on the basis of
which they will be given marks, in how much times they spoke, and how well they spoke.

Another strategy was executed by me in which I asked the children to do debate on the topic can
teachers be replaced by robots Two of them has to say in favour i.e., smartphones are good and
another two have to speak against them, again following the ‘without being offensive rule’. In this
activity we assess their knowledge, vocabulary, and their convincing power. And we analysed that
they are lacking in convincing, and sometimes even if they are having a good point, they are not
able to express it because of lack of words and knowledge too. For this we taught them the right
way to say and convince people with proper breathing and highlighting the main points that too
with the help of art of body language. As body language plays a vital role in convincing people. It
has the power to speak more than words. And we did the same activity again and expected the
possible changes in their debate in the next session. And they performed better in the next debate
class comparatively.

And we altogether moderated motivational sessions for the children too so that they practice more
and stay motivated and encouraged during the whole study and made them understand the value
of public speaking skills. This strategy was done by all of us together and Shivam has a great
experience in reporting so he was motivating them by his own personal experiences, while I have
been familiar with radio industry and compeering so I also gave examples to them out of my own
experience through which they were feeling more inspired.

Meanwhile, we also asked them to do some self-practice like take any topic of your choice and
practice it on mirror and then in the next session perform that in front of everyone. Another
personal practice activity we gave was, we asked them to watch any YouTube video of your choice,
in which a speaker is giving any speech or performing any verbal activity on stage, copy them, and
in the next session narrate the same content as it is, following the body language too. This will
enhance their memory also and they learn the art of body language too. At this stage they actually
started improving. The changes were seen in their speech. I won’t they became master’s in public
speaking as it takes times and experience, but still they improved to a large extent.

Budget

Now if I talk about the budget or the money that costs us in this whole study is just a chicken feed
amount of Rs.150-250/-. And of course ours and their ample amount of time which was very
necessary for this study to be done successfully. We spent this amount on children to reward them
for their participation and doing the tasks seriously and timely, and fortunately the children were
very cooperating and serious towards the tasks and activities given to them. On the basis of
improvement we reward them with some chocolates, and appreciation so that they stay encouraged
and motivated during the whole study and does not lack interest at any point. Adding to this, my
team members Sameer and Shivam, conveyance charge was also included which was round about
Rs.100-150/- but that was worth paying as it helped someone in resolving their problem which is
an important issue to look after on.
Verifiable Outcomes

The most common phobia people have is the “Fear of public speaking”. Some people dread public
speaking even more than death. Most of us live with this fear throughout our lives. Being an
underrated skill we fail to get proper guidance to overcome our stage fright. As schools and
colleges do not provide any training on public speaking, most of us lack the confidence to speak
in public when we reach adulthood. Public speaking is necessary for each one of us irrespective of
our age or profession. Public speaking plays a vital role in building up one’s image and personality
throughout life.

We three people as team, I, Sameer and Shivam worked dedicatedly to achieve the outcomes of
our study. We figure out the best possible ways to overcome fear of public speaking in the children.
And we succeeded too to a large extent.

On the first day, when we met our all four subjects, they were so shy that they were not even able
to speak up their name in an audible tone, they were so scared that they felt difficult to even ask
for a glass of water. But then as soon as we started interacting with them, we made them
comfortable by exchanging some jokes and informal talks made them understand why we are
doing this study. The children were fortunately very cooperating, and serious to learn what is being
taught. Since they were children so wittiness and naughtiness is in their each and every vein.
During the study they cracked many jokes and did naughty things but the best part was they were
doing and taking their tasks seriously and completing them punctually.

But as we were doing more and more sessions they started improving their public speaking skills.
They were very interested and keen to learn new thing and public speaking is a necessity in this
era. In the second session we gave them a picture and they had to speak about a story which they
depict from their understanding, though they were not able to form the story instantly but they
made their best efforts and whatever they depicted they tried to explain it in their own way. But
then in the next session when we asked them to speak on the same picture they did a good job as
compared to last one. Yes, flaws were there, language issues, sometimes fluency issues, confidence
issues, but change cannot be brought in a day. We were going step by step in their improvisation.

At times children do felt difficulties in doing some activities like self-practicing in front of mirror,
here again they were feeling shy at their home to speak in front of the mirror as all the family
members are at home and if they practice they come in the room and distract them. But still
somehow they managed by the time. They were also facing difficulties in improvising their
vocabulary in this much short time. So we helped them by asking them to bring their content and
where ever they are facing any difficulty be it regarding vocabulary, body language, knowledge or
any kind of difficulty we will help them in solving that. Whenever they were stuck with words we
helped them in finding good words and asking them to learn synonyms for the same which is also
one of the self-practicing activity. Some felt difficulties with the pronunciations, for that we made
the exercise some tongue twisters like, I saw a kitten eating chicken in the kitchen, I scream ur
scream we all scream for the ice cream, Dubey dubai mein doob gaya, double bubble bubble
double, etc.

As per our analysis and assessment, 50% improvement is there in children, while if I talk on
individual level two has improved up to 60-65%, while one has improved to around 70%, and last
but not the least is a bit more weak and shy than others so it will require more time in her
improvement but she has made up around 30-40%. Even if this study is done here, we will continue
doing these public speaking activities with them on weekly basis. So that we can improve them at
their best.

Feedback

We as team worked a lot with full dedication. So it is very necessary to get the feedback whether
it was worth enough or not for the subject. Without feedback communication is incomplete.
According to our evaluation we have analysed and assess the whole study but what impact has
been form on the subject’s part is also necessary to know. Whether, for them, it was worthless or
worth giving time to us. So for this, we took feedback from the subjects and from their parents as
well. There is a feedback form that we asked our subjects to fill from which we will be able to
know whether it was a successful research or not.
Feedback form

1. Did you enjoyed the session?

2. Did it made any change in your life? If yes then in what ways?

3. What impact do you have of this study?

4. Did it benefitted you in any way? If yes, then how?

5. How much improvement you yourself felt in you?

a. Not at all

b. To a small extent

c. To some extent

Team work evaluation
Justification for team job allocation
We worked as a team and it was an amazing experience working with them i.e. Sameer and
Shivam. Both of them are very cooperating and well timed. We distributed the work similarly so
that there was no chance of burden on any one person. We divided strategies in equal parts and my
team members were cooperating all the time. Whenever one is executing the strategy others are
fully coordinating with them and I think they did a great job when we ran the all hands meeting.
It exhibited that they are skilled of getting people to work together and converse efficiently. I
admire their communication skills especially Shivam. Sameer was looking after all technical stuff
and is also good at photography so he clicked almost all the photos and is also very good in mixing
up with the children so all the children got involved with him easily.

Conflicts and resolution

Though we were very good as a team but when we work in a team conflicts do arise. But that was
one of the quality of our team we resolved the conflicts by being patient and calm. Initially when
we were to start the research no body was ready for the initiative. That is the biggest reason of
delay in completing the research so at last moment we had to rush things but still the work got
finished on time but if we would have started earlier then it would have been much smoother to
complete the research. But then we discussed the situation and importance of time limit then we
started working towards that and finally came to the finishing point. I am also having tight schedule
everyday of morning 9:00 to evening 9:00 and Shivam is also occupied with his office things and
for Sameer things were bit easy as he is not in working position yet, so sometimes it became very
difficult to manage time which is convenient for all, but then we decided particular day, date and
time and we were all abide by that. This way we solved our conflicts. It is just the matter of
cooperation and understanding each other’s problems and perspectives.

Stress Level Management

As I mentioned earlier for Me and Shivam it was very difficult to manage time for this research
because of our hectic schedule. So the stress level was very high for us to manage everything,
complete all the tasks of the day, be it on professional front or academic front. But we made a to
do list of the day and worked accordingly, in this way it became bit easier for us to manage our
time for everything. And roaming from this end to that end in this hot summer was also a big
reason of stress, but we stay hydrated all the time, as we knew one thing that we have to complete
this project in the given timeline. So this is how we overcome our stress level.
Motivational Strategies
Though we were to give motivation session to our subjects but we also needed the same as we had
too many things lined up for the whole day, so as we all know that one of the best stress reliever
is music, so I personally listen music to stay up motivated, other than that, I do spent some time
with myself through which I got many answers solved, which is my another way of being
motivated all the time, other than that basic daily things like I sleep on time, if start is good then
end is good.

Feedback on team work

We had a team of three people, me, Sameer and Shivam. It was an incredible experience working
with such active co-members. It was my first ever experience of doing a research, we got to meet
new people. My team members were very cooperating and prompt and were punctual. They were
supporting in all the sessions. I really enjoyed working with them.
My subjects i.e., four children, Shivangi, Shambhavi, Pawani, and Sanskriti. Were just amazing
and cooperating. It was great fun working with these witty children. I am thankful to my faculty
who gave me this opportunity.
When the children were informed about these sessions they were very excited and curious to attend
the sessions. They were serious about the tasks given to them and were very much interested in
learning public speaking skills.
