Objectives: 1. To provide the mathematical support by way of probabilistic models and statistical
methodology to tackle problems encountered in Science and Engineering applications
Expected At the end of this course the students will be able to
Outcome:
1. Understand basic notions of probability arising in a variety of uncertain situations
which are nontraditional in areas of science and engineering.
2. Knowing the basic tools of statistical methods Emphasize the study of data analysis
leading to probabilistic models
3. participate in online data science challenges

Module No. 1 Random variables 4 Hours


Random variables – Probability mass functions, probability density functions and distribution functions-
moment generating function– Binomial, Poisson, Normal distributions
Module No. 2 Correlation, Regression and Estimation 3 Hours
Simple linear regression and correlation, Estimation

Module No. 3 Testing hypothesis - I 4 Hours


Procedure of testing of hypothesis - Large sample tests: z-test

Module No. 4 Testing hypothesis - II 4 Hours


Small sample tests - Student’s t-test - F-test- Chi-square test- independence of attributes and goodness of fit

1. Basics of specific software.
2. Getting Data, built-in data. reading data from structured files.
3. Writing functions, Control statements, Loops.
4. Probability distributions – Binomial distribution, Poisson Distribution.
5. Probability distributions – Normal distribution.
6. Basic statistics – correlation and covariance, t- test.
7. Linear models – Simple linear regression, Multiple regression.
8. Test whether the specific observations are coming from a normal distribution for a given data file.
9. a) Suppose a person wants to see whether the price of the apartment is 60 lakhs on an average. How does
he/she check it for a given data file.
b) Whether the price is heavily dependent on the area of the apartment.
c) Whether most of the apartments have central heating system.
10. Life time of light bulb, Food label on a cookie bag, Proportion of voters in election by Testing of
hypothesis.
11. Recovery time of the patient taking new drug by using t-test.
12. Mileage performance of cars, Effectiveness of ammonium chloride on grain yield of paddy using paired
t-test.
13. Student food habit against exercise level using goodness of fit.
