“Applying Speech and Thought Presentation in the Script

The Tinker’s Magic”

I. BACKGROUND

The modes of speech and thought presentation developed by Leech and Short are
formally very much similar but are differently exploited by writers. Therefore, the effects
they create vary from text to text and make a reader respond differently. The categorization
being discussed distinguishes between five techniques on the speech as well as thought
presentation cline. The following techniques are Direct Speech/Thought, Indirect
Speech/Thought, Free Direct Speech/Thought and Narrative Report of Speech/Thought Act.

The foremost influential system for the examination of discourse and thought
representation in story fiction is without a doubt that created by Mick Short and his co-
researchers. Leech and Short’s course reading contains the first orderly account of this vital
account strategy and their account is wealthy in illustrative cases (Leech and Short 1981).
More as of late, much work has been carried out by stylisticians on the way discourse and
thought is displayed in talk classes past those customarily classed as scholarly. As our chief
concern here is to create a set of devices that can be utilized moderately comfortably by the
understudy of dialect and stylistics, the brief outline of the show given in this unit will of
need be kept as straightforward as conceivable. To this impact, reference will be made
mainly to the early on medicines of the subject in Leech and Short (1981) and Short (1996).
