Mechanical Properties of Materials
A. Hardness

Samples Thumbnail Glass/ Ballpoint Spoon/Fork/Steel

Knife
Wood 2 2 2
Plastic 1 1 2
Metal 1 1 1

Questions
1. Describe the material samples scratched by your thumbnail, a glass and a steel knife?
The thumbnail, ballpoint and fork leaved a visible mark to the wood, while in plastic
and metal they leaved only minimal spot but can be seen by naked eye.
2. Which of these materials is the softest? The hardest?
The softest material is the wood and the hardest is the metal.

B. Strength

Conditions Number of marbles

1 whole sheet plain paper 1 marble
Plain paper folded one time (half) 1 marble
Plain paper folded 2 times (quarter) 6 marbles
1 whole sheet corrugated paper 80 marbles

Questions
1. Which condition gave the strongest strength test, 1 whole sheet plain paper or the 1
whole sheet corrugated paper? Why?
The 1 whole sheet corrugated paper is the strongest test gave the strongest test
because it supported 80 marbles.
2. Deduce a rationalization on the strength of the paper as it was folded up to two times?
The strength of the paper when it was folded up to times can only support 1 marble
because its to thin to support heavy objects.

C. Elasticity and Plasticity

Samples Length before Length after stretch Difference in stretch

stretch (cm) (cm) (cm)
Candle stick 16 cm 16 cm 0 cm
Glue stick 30.5 cm 30.8 cm 0.3 cm
Rubber band 6 cm 30 cm 24 cm
Wooden ruler 30.5 cm 30.5 cm 0 cm
Plastic ruler 30 cm 30 cm 0 cm
Metal ruler 30 cm 30 cm 0 cm

Questions
1. Which material is elastic? Why?
Rubber band is more elastic because elasticity is measured as ratio of stress to strain
and steel comes back to its original form faster than the rubber.
2. Which materials are not elastic? Why?
Candle stick, wooden, plastic and metal ruler are not elastic because it doesn’t get any
changes when stretch and stays in its original form
3. Which material exhibited the property of plasticity? Why?
Metal ruler because it is deformed continuously and permanently without a rupture
during the application of force.

D. Brittleness and Toughness

Sample Brittleness Toughness (No Rupture)

(Rupture) Upon Bending Upon Twisting Upon Stretch
Candle stick
Glue stick
Rubber band
Wooden ruler
Plastic ruler
Metal ruler

Questions
1. Which materials are brittle? Why?
The materials that are brittle are candle stick, glue stick, wooden and plastic ruler
because they can easily break when there is a force applied to it.
2. Which materials are tough? Why?
Metals are tough because it can’t be broken easily
3. Which material is the weakest? The toughest?
The weakest material is the candle stick and the toughest material is the metal ruler.
4. Cite and define other mechanical properties not demonstrated in the experiment. Give
sample materials possessing said properties.
Mechanical Property Definition Example
Ductility Property of a material wire
associated with the ability
to be hammered thin or
stretched into wire
without breaking
Malleability The quality of something clay
that can be shaped into
something else
