Mahasen, you enjoy mat times and happily come to sit and join in. you are familiar with the routine
around having mat time. At first we welcome everyone by singing a name song. We usually have a story
and a few more songs.
Mahasen, ever since you first started at An-Nur you and your sister Farrah had a strong interest in playing
Dr’s, it was amazing to watch the two of you, you knew exactly what to do! We even wondered if your
mum or Dad was a doctor!
continue the role play of doctors. And you jump up and say “me, doctor!” then you stand beside me while
I sing and five money children jump. Then Mummy calls the doctor, and the doctor says… You go towards
the monkeys and wave your finger and sing “no more monkeys jumping on the bed!”
What a good idea, Mahasen, another way that you are more active participants at mat time. I see your
emerging leadership skills in this role.
Mahasen, I love your idea of turning 5 little monkeys into more of a role play, this meant you could again
draw in your dramatic doctors play and take ownership of the mat time.
Mahasen, I will continue to look for leadership opportunities for you to guide and direct others. You have
great communication skills and you are a wonderful friend and sister.
I will continue to encourage songs in stories in which

“Children experience the stories and symbols of their own and other cultures”
(Te Whariki, 2017)
