This week, we will focus on adjectives and adverbs.

Adjectives: an adjective is a word that describes the quality or state of a noun (remember—
a noun is a person, place, or thing).
For example:
The tall man ducked under the doorway.

My warm jacket still got wet in the heavy rain.

The angry customer shouted at the annoyed waitress.

I slipped and fell on the icy sidewalk.

Adverb: an adverb modifies an adjective, verb (remember—a verb is the action or state of a
noun) or another adverb. Adverbs usually come right before or after the verb in the
sentence, and oftentimes end with -ly.
For example:
Adverbs can modify verbs.
He runs quickly.

The cat gently rubbed against my leg and purred.

Adverbs can sometimes come in phrases of two or more and can modify other adverbs.
For example:
I ran very quickly.

Business vocabulary terms:
1. Authorize (verb): to endorse, empower, judge, or permit by someone with
recognized or proper authority
Sample sentence: Before we can purchase those supplies, you have to take the order form
to the commissioner for him to authorize.
2. Dispatch (verb): send off to a destination or for a purpose
Sample sentence: We will dispatch ten policemen to serve as security for the event.
3. Recruit (verb): to persuade someone to work for a company or new organization
Sample sentence: The hiring manager will only recruit the best interns from the group to
work for the company.
4. Output (noun): the amount of something produced by a person, machine, or
industry
Sample sentence: The monthly output of usable goods from the factory was much higher
than we had expected.
5. Budget (noun): an estimate of cost, revenue, and resources for an expected time
period, reflecting set financial conditions or goals
Sample sentence: The amount the company spent on bonuses this year resulted in them
spending far more money than was in their yearly budget.
6. Industry (noun): all the people and activities involved in one type of business
Sample sentence: I want to get involved in the television industry, so I moved to Los
Angeles.
7. Substantial (adjective): of considerable importance, size, or worth
Sample sentence: The city’s mayor made a substantial donation to the new student
center they are building on campus.
8. Dynamic (adjective): continuously changing or developing
Sample sentence: The dynamic atmosphere of the tech industry is what makes it
appealing to young college graduates.
9. Receptive (adjective): willing to consider or accept new ideas or suggestions
Sample sentence: The new boss will be good for the company because he is receptive to
ideas for improvement.
