“ON GLOBALIZATION”

ACTIVITY 1

A.

1. Explain the following concepts of globalization.

a) Globalization is internationalization.
-refers to the promotion of global peace and well-being through the development and application of
international structures, primarily but not solely of an intergovernmental kind.

b) Globalization is liberalization
-trade liberalization is the reverse process of protectionism. After previous protectionist decisions,
trade liberalization occurs when governments decide to move back toward free trade. The outcome of
these liberalizing and integrating processes is known as globalization.

c) Globalization is used as universalization

-Globalization as universalization uses the idea of planetary synthesis to explain the globalizing trends
occurring today. This is the spreading of various experiences and objects to people at all corners of the
earth. Universalization emphasizes the homogenization of the world’s practices on every front, whether
political, legal, cultural, or economic.

2. Explain globalization as imperialism of McDonalds, Hollywood and CNN.

--The mass media, publicity, advertisement and secular entertainers and intelectuals play a major role
today. In the contemporary world, Hollywood, CNN and Disneyland are more influential than the Vatican,
the Bible or the public relations rhetoric of political figures (Petras, 1994). The U.S. flavor of globalization
stems from the culture of possessive individualism and consumerism that has its most radical embodiment
in American Society.
-McDonald’s media has been a driving force of this cultural imperialism. Media imperialism is a theory
based upon an over-concentration of mass media from larger nations as a significant variable in negatively
affecting smaller nations, in which the national identity of smaller nations is lessened or lost due to media
homogeneity inherent in mass media from the larger countries.
-Large American corporations, like McDonalds, are aware of their impact on changing social conditions of
other countries and cultures, but yet still insist that these changes are only improving the culture.
Example/situations
-A good example is the 1996 World Bank study, El Salvador: Meeting the Challenge of Globalization. There,
it is announced that the main goal for El Salvador’s policymakers is to enhance “global competitiveness”
by rapidly aiming for two main goals: “(i) promote domestic and foreign investment and incorporate the
country into the global production chain by lowering the costs of operating in the country; and (ii) reduce
the size of the State through accelerated privatization, while strengthening the public sector’s role as
facilitator of private sector development” (World Bank 1996, 1).
